Strictly speaking though it hasn't always been a part of their range, as it was originally introduced by Dapol, who are making the Rails version!

Personally I think Hornby would have been better relegating their existing Terrier to Railroad and letting Rails get on with theirs rather than wasting money on new tooling.

Think you may have missed the comment - the Terrier was actually almost complete when Simon left.  It was in that case in their plans to come out.  In fact one version has already landed in shops.  AS to Dapol I think it was actually started by GMR (Airfix) - so nice link Hornby Hobbies all those years ago.

Not being very up to speed with the modern hobby, I am slightly puzzled by the apparent deep concern over the lost moulds, surely most of the older moulds would produce something no longer considered up to standard for today's modeler.

The point is that they could have been Airfix moulds, not just railway related. The introduction of the Airfix Vintage Range has ensured that some older models which could only be obtained through auction sites at high prices can once again be purchased new - and in many cases at a lower cost.

In addition Hornby very rarely disposed of moulds, so that would likely include Minic and TT models.  I know that a few years back the 3mm Society sought to see if there was any potential for re-runs of certain models / parts.

The clear-out was to just reduce storage and I think at £50 a Ton, you saw a great many £10K moulds get lost forever - hence the dismay of may in Hornby today.

Hornby are probably the last company to offer everything - locos, coaches, wagons, buildings, track and controllers, Bachmann do almost everything but their track range isn't as complete as Hornby's.

I understand that their range is the old Made in Austria Hornby trackwork, just turn one over and look at the codes and where the Hornby name was on the sleepering.

I thought the last management team that got the order of the boot to bring in LD had a lot of good ideas, particularly a conscious decision to refocus back to high quality products and the need to maintain a steady stream of new items. Others have noted it but the Hellcat was obviously initiated and developed before LD arrived (the idea that such a kit would be sat in a cupboard ignored until LD had the vision to produce the thing is clearly absurd) and the Hornby initiative with sound and new locomotives were a hangover from what went before. Which indicates the old team(s) wasn't (weren't) as completely inept as claimed. The last lot were only in the job a few months and got kicked out before any of their ideas could come to fruition but on the product development side LD inherited a company that was already going in the right direction and with plenty of excellent project in the pipeline.

Whilst it might appear odd, that is what happened - the previous management could not see it selling.  Same with the Terrier, this was dropped when Simon left.  You have to remember that the vast majority of the releases during the last team being in place were actually the products of Simon and those around him.  The release year will see work that can stretch back over a number of prior years, not just the 12 months before being revealed. For example I was told that Clan Line was in development for almost 5 years before being actually shown in a catalogue and then being made available.

From the Retailer aspect the previous team did the market and the Brand(s) no favours, with their sales attitude - Black Friday sales et. Destroying the confidence of the Public and the Trade alike. Why order/buy now when no doubt they will be discounted due to low sales in a few months time.  This attitude helped Corgi sit down, as a customer could wait 6 months and the non certified item will be at 50% cost to purchase. Result Corgi were placed on sale and purchased by Hornby Hobbies, at a very reasonable cost  - given the stock sitting around along with access to old moulds etc.

The mistakes of the past will not be sorted in a one year timeframe, Hornby should be admired for being so open and you also need to look at all the Brands under their care which need support and nuture.

  5. John Dutfield LLP in Chelmsford, Essex will once again be supporting Cav and Alex sell these products through the shop.

Whilst it is early days with prices and delivery dates TBC, any pre-orders through both Cavalex and ourselves will give a good indication of interest.

  6. So after talking with our Accountant, we shall continue with the spreadsheet provided - which provides the information for the Quarterly Returns. Our Accountant will support us with making MTD inputs.

With regard to Import / Export post a No Deal situation.  I followed the HMRC letter to the word, got a registration notification within a matter of days. So sit back and wait.

HMRC do seem to need to really understand the way that small retailers work, if we are spending ages with the digital paperwork it is probably taking you away from customers. Many of us are not able to consider employing more people to contend with all HMRC and others seek from us.  Each year we have to conduct a compliance check with our credit card machine supplier. The questions are more for large scale companies not small traders.

People wonder why there are fewer outlets.

  7.

    • Five-Pole motor with two flywheels
    • Metal Helical Gear box for maximum performance and slow speed running
    • Gearing arranged so locomotive can achieve a scale top speed of 100 mph
    • DCC ready with 21pin interface

I hope that it is arranged so that it can obtain a prototypical top speed, not just 100mph.

Deltics were well capable of speeds over 120 and were recorded doing so.

Whilst they had a Top Speed of 100 mph as shown in the cab ends, they were - and did - prove capable to exceeding this figure. So the models should take this into consideration, not set a limit which would undersell their true capability.  This is not unique to Deltics as most rail stock can achieve better than the quoted line speed maximum shown, you also have to allow for % error in the speedo.

  8. Morning all,

So as some of you may be aware or not as the case may be I'm the EMGS Trade officer and a EMGS Board member and being the youngest member on the Board by a good few years and a member of the forum, I will try and asnwer any questions or comments that you post up.

The reason for the B6 was one of space. I'm sure you would agree that for someone starting out/trying EM, they wouldn't want to build a big layout or need lots of space for the track plan so the B6 seamed to be the best compromise. The long term plan is to add to the range with other points etc as and when we are able too as each point isn't small pocket change to produce.

The EM track is exclusive to the EMGS and Peco won't be retailing it through thier normal stockists.

    Thanks

    Simon

A shame as using the existing Retail stream could increase sales, and therefore interest in EM.  Even if PECO are only being commissioned to produce, any through sales to the retailers could earn EMGS another income stream as a licence payment - this could be via a slightly higher Retail Price. Whilst the income will not be the same as achieved through the EMGS Store it will be an income.

  9. As an exhibitor I have to be ready by the opening time. Now I cannot always have a free Friday to set up or the exhibition cannot afford to accommodate me for the Friday night. So that means getting up early so I can be set up in time for the show start time. If the organisers start letting punters in earlier so they don't have to queue, they would expect us to set up earlier. If we were still setting up and you had been let in I bet you or someone else would be moaning we were not ready for you. Exhibitors are not professionals, we do it because in the main we enjoy doing so but threads like this do make me think twice about taking my layout to a show.

The flip side to this is the geezer who turns up late in the afternoon and complains the show finished before he had time to see all the layouts.

We - Mid Essex MRC - normally attempt to 'sell' tickets to those waiting to get in at 10:00am, so as to allow them quicker entry and reduce any crowding at the Pay Desk.  It is not a question of holding back those wanting to get in, you will want everybody to be in a position to start at the designated time.  If you are on your own that time before Opening allows you to undertake those necessary trips - drinks etc.

  10. There speaks someone who has never taken a film crew out before. The BRM guys can fill a people-mover with equipment just for a DVD shoot! We once had to explain how all the gubbins was going in the guard's compartment as it would have filled the loco footplate we were filming on. "You can bring one camera and that is ALL"....

Wouldn't the idea result in three identical looking layouts? The current format means you get 3 very different interpretations of the theme, which looks better on TV.

Phil,  Sorry but you can achieve good coverage with a smaller crew. You do not always need a massive crew and equipment. Having been involved in covering both events using a single camera to multiple numbers - both for pre-record and live situations - you can achieve very good content.

You can let a Producer / Director run away with a Wish / Need List, it is all a question of setting out the parameters - and in some cases looking at the cost.  In addition some modern equipment is fairly indiscreet, compared to TV Studio dolly cams which you see on the likes of the BBC News.

  11. Mid Essex MRC are to hold their 42nd Annual Model Railway Exhibition on Saturday 21st September 2019.  As previously, this is our 'normal slot' of the 3rd Saturday of September.

  12. I do like English Common Law.

In my humble opinion a manufacturer cannot be obliged, and is not obliged to sell a product to any vendor. Nor can a vendor set the price from the manufacturer, nor as on-sold, i.e. retail.  This to my mind is self evident.

When a manufacturer supplies goods under a sale contract the terms of the contract are subject to EU laws and UK laws. If these are in terms which are complex and can only be made effective by legal action and adjudication, then sobeit.  I am no fan of EU bureaucracy.

But then I did philosophy and economics at uni, not law...    so I try to think of things in terms of common sense and natural justice. Dickens' Jardyce vs Jardyce comes to mind.

At present there have been no Test Cases for our Legal Systems to set out the rights and wrongs. As stated many times a manufacturer does not have to supply a vendor, whilst it may upset some that is a fact.

The same applies in that anyone can refuse to supply a product to a customer if they feel that the price offer is too low. Until a Customer and Vendor have agreed the item for supply at X price no Contract has been entered into.

With Pre-Order comes a number of issues. Was it stated by the Vendor that any price rise (or decline) would be made use of, was any money (deposit) handed over - if you talk to Trading Standards it is a minefield to tread your way through. I recall many years back LIMA announced a locomotive at X Price, however when they supplied them their Trade and therefore SRP had increased due to increased manufacture costs. Some vendors whom had taken deposits had to bite the bullet and see decreased margins.

  13. That's what I understand from the letter. Any new items arriving from September 14th onwards are subject to the 10% discount for 6 weeks.

The Ts and Cs replaced anything previously in operation, so from the stated date.

Discount hold-backs are not new, so we now have broadly similarterms from Bachmann, Dapol, Heljan & Hornby.   As stated earlier whilst no one can price fix under British Law, there is nothing to stop a producer holding back products from those whom they may feel are causing them concern with their pricing of new product (deep discounting).

Some may not like the attitude, but do these same individuals expect a discount when they undertake their weekly shopping at their local supermarket.  Yes, they can make use of the discount stores ALDI for example, but I cannot see how they would get away with virtually demanding a discount at the till of their local TESCO or Co-Op.

  14. The BGs are expected to arrive in Q3 of 2019. Will be interesting to see whether they can hold that figure for the next 12 months.  Others have quoted RPs which have increased just before actual delivery.

  15. Went along this morning and a mixed bag of layouts and trade as usual. The main hall was like a sauna at 10 AM, the smaller hall/refreshments area much cooler.

How the traders will cope over 2 days I dread to think. I'd had enough after an hour.

The "0" gauge layout in the smaller hall was excellent.

    Rob

It was very warm all weekend - even with a fan

  16. I dropped by today for a small DCC decoder for an Ixion Fowler [gauge 0] and they helped me out with a Hornby one. They had some Bachmann buildings and a corner shop for $15 was a bargain too. I can't think of any other model rail shops in Leicestershire now.

Conveniently close to Rothley GCR [by car] and Mountsorrel too.

Have known, and dealt, with this Business since the days when Maureen and her Husband owned it. A wonderful couple, and a fantastic shop - used them when I bought DVDs to support a Preservation Society, would go out of their way to help. But the market has changed so no longer in the market.  Good to see that they are still going.

  17. Some manufacturers now state that for a certain time a Retailer can discount up to a max percentage, penalty could be that deliveries go back down the queue.

The interesting thing is that whilst it appears that many buyers expect a discount, but how do they treat the supermarkets when shopping. I can just imagine the reaction at a Till if they said "I realise that the readout shows £60.99, but would you accept £54.00". Even calling over a Store Manager would not result in any discount. Oh, but do they realise that prices change even when it is not a restock, as the prices come from the EPOS system regardless of whether the stock is old or new.

  18. Interestingly there is a Business called DD Exhibitions Ltd, based in the Manchester area. I doubt if they have any link with DD Exhibitions within this thread.

Many individuals have spoken with this gentleman, trying to give him advice based on years of organising Club exhibitions. Whether what is undertaken remains the right side of British Law, that would be subject to Legal Action - maybe after an incident took place, which could be food or financial related.

I was informed that the exhibitions are run to provide a means of purchasing somewhere to live. But in HMRC eyes that would be Earned Income so would need to be declared via a yearly Tax Return. oh, the other body whom may have an interest is Trading Standards, if there are misleading or untrue advertised claims being made. Someone mentioned supporting charities, well if that claim is openly used that might interest the charities named and the Charity Commission.

The concern no doubt is the potential impact on established exhibitions, if the Public and Modellers feel they have been short changed by these type of events mention in this thread and decide to avoid Club Events.

  19. A shame to see Kim deciding to close, we have enjoyed working with them over the years. Helping each other out, supporting each others customers. As previously mentioned fewer Model Shops around. Found an old Hornby Dealership listing all those which could be found around the UK, amazing to note how many are no longer with us.

  20. Scott,

Brilliant models, I do admire the scratch building I see around - just wish I could. Whilst I can handle civil engineering, railway vehicles never seem to turn out correct.

As to warping plastic I tend to use Phoenix Precision adhesive, do not seem to have to use as much as some other Brands. Evergreen seems softer and therefore easier to cut, but still use Slaters products - especially their embossed sheets.

With regard to cutting plasticard, there are a couple of Models in The Chopper range, these are used by aviation and maritime plastic modellers. Not Cheap - mid £50

    Regards

    Ken
