There seem to be quite a lot of Markits wheels (loco drivers and others) listed on the Wizard Models web site; a few indicated as out of stock but mostly not.

On that subject and in view of the comments above on rolling stock wheels, I wondered whether anyone had any experience of using the Wizard Wheels that Wizard Models sells?  There seems to be a big range and while I haven't used them myself, the construction appears to be similar to Gibsons.

I've used Wizard wagon wheels and they are very good.

Indeed, I was disappointed to see the price of a pack of four Kadee NEM uncouplers suddenly rise dramatically during lockdown, after a period of poor availability: by as much as 50% at the majority of retailers.  This will definitely be a deterrent to people currently making a decision upon which system to standardise on.

As a result, I have started to use more of the Hornby/Roco couplers within ‘permanently’ fixed coach rakes, with Kadees installed just on each end.

It pays to shop around for Kadees. I was at the Palmerston North Train show yesterday and the price for a a pack of  #19's varied between NZ$10.30 at one trader and NZ$20at another!

Kadee, in White City, Oregon do provide a mail order service with very reasonable airmail postage.

Like you I find Roco couplers useful for fixed formations with Kadees at each end.

  3. I recall purchasing a Bristol Models motorising kit (complete with Bulldog motor and Romford wheels) for the Airfix 9F when I lived in the UK in 1985.

I tried to build it the following year when I returned to NZ. . A waste of time and money though I found an alternate use for motor and wheels.

On 12 December, I bought an ebay item from Oz. A photograph, unframed, it arrived safely on the 17th March. Things are that slow.

We seem to be very fortunate in NZ. Items airmailed from the UK are arriving here anytime between 7 - 14 days. In some instances this is better than pre Covid. It might have something to do with the NZ Government directly funding international air carriers to maintain airfreight links vital to our export sector. Transit times from Australia are not so good. I ordered some replacement tyres for a Dinky Toy from a chap in Melbourne; took 29 days...

Received my black Friday sale Cemflos this afternoon - they finally reached Scotland today despite postal delays.

Wow! My  Black Friday Cemflos arrived in New Zealand yesterday. Looking at the parcel tracking history most of the transit time was spent at Heathrow waiting for a flight... This is about the usual transit time for air parcels from the UK to NZ so with all the restrictions due to the pandemic we are very well served.

Wagons are superb too! Thanks for the great deal Fran.

I thought I'd start another loco this evening (a DJH SE&CR D1 class), but frustration soon set in. The frames are two thick slabs of pre-drilled brass and no amount of persuasion could get my 40W iron to make the solder flow around the bearings. I gave up and got on with some scenery instead!

I use a Dremel gas powered iron for jobs like this. Works a treat.

Thank you Luke for your analysis and suggestions. Apart from messing about with CVs etc. I am of the school that if it does not work correctly out of the box I return it whence it came from so they can a) fix the problem, b) send me a replacement or c) refund me. I don’t want a refund and a new loco would be the best outcome a repaired one the next best option.

I had a similar problem with my 10203.

I removed the PCB and returned that to Kernow rather than shipping the entire loco back from New Zealand.

Kernow replaced the PCB which I reinstalled and the loco now runs as it should.

    Regards

I see that the MOL TRUTH is currently in Singapore, next stop Suez Canal. I hope no one finds out that (North) British warships are going to sail through there!!! What sucks is that once mine reaches Kernow it then has to cross the Atlantic and most of Canada. Would have just been quicker to mail it from China to me!

Yes, and my two will go all the way to Cornwall then all the way to New Zealand!

  9. Hello Tony,

I have upgraded a few old Triang Murgatroyd bogie tank wagons by replacing the original bogies with Cambrian BR plate frame bogies and Jackson wheels.

This reduces ride height and makes for a reasonable "layout"wagon.

Very easy to do but alas no soldering required...

    Regards

    Simon
