  1. Following our discussion on the LBSCR C3 I have had a great offer from my good friend Arun (who produced the L12 parts) to design and 3D print one! So that is another that can be moved up to the centre part of the list, leaving only two with no solutions: Missing locos where the solution is now in hand (2): LB&SCR Billinton E5X (4) - 3D printed body now ordered from Shapeways + SEF E5 chassis kit in hand SECR Kirtey R (18) - assembly (by me) at advanced stage from SE Finecast R1 kit Missing locos where a potential solution has been identified (10): SECR Wainwright B1 (16) - a Jidenco kit exists but I can't find one (and it may not be that great!) LB&SCR Billinton B4X (12) - potential solution through a 3D printed body under exploration LB&SCR Marsh C3 (8) - solution identified through 3D design & print LSWR Drummond C14 (3) - potential solution = CSP / Agenoria kit announced years ago but yet to be delivered LB&SCR Marsh D3X (1) - potential solution through indication of a forthcoming 3D printed body, chassis to be sourced LB&SCR Billinton E4X (4)- potential solution through a 3D printed body + RTR Bachmann E4 chassis under exploration SECR Wainwright F1 (9) - solution = Jidenco kit held but not yet in build (& may be difficult / lacking accuracy) SR Maunsell I1X (18) - potential solution through a 3D printed body explored + Alan Gibson milled chassis frames in hand LSWR Drummond S11 (10) - further set of L12 body parts requested + SE Finecast T9 chassis in hand for modification (think T9 with large boiler & smaller wheels) Soton Dock Co. 0458 (1) - possible solution to modify CSP Agenoria kit CSP 04 identified & kit now obtained DS75 (1) - exploring possible solution via newly drawn etches Missing locos where no solution has yet been identified (3): KESR 0-8-0T Hawthorn Leslie No.949 'Hecate' (1) Fowler 0-4-0DM diesel shunter (Nos.400S & 600S) (2) I must look at these last two more carefully; perhaps they are something that Judith Edge or High Level would produce? Tony
  2. I confess that I have done very little research on the C3 so far, however, what is interesting is that the boiler used was the same one used to upgrade the E5 and E6 to E5-X and E6-X - so perhaps a good starting point might actually be to look at these two tank engines and see whether the bunker might be removed to turn them into a tender loco - the wheels on the C3 are however, smaller and so a different chassis would also be called for... and so on... I personally thought that the C3 looked more like the SR Q class. Tony
  3. Chris Yes, likely to be a chalk face to match others around the layout, but aside from determining that I would have a bit of narrow gauge in there, I have so far done NIL research on available locos; I do have a few wagons but that is it. Tony
  4. Fortunately for me the SR is wider than Kent, and I'm still a bit uncertain as to exactly where Churminster & Stowe Magna were located, so I think I can find a reason. As you say - these are very attractive vans. Tony
  5. Jason You are right - and I have the book, I just hadn't thought that they might be in it! Now all I need is the transfers - will have to look at what is on the HMRS sheet. Best wishes Tony Quite agree - a good book that I just hadn't considered when posing my question.
  6. Could you perhaps list the things that were done right on this build (if any!)? It might be a shorter list! Tony
  7. The track is in place but at present I have almost nothing to run on it - I'd better start reading your other thread! Tony
  8. Despite what you say, I always think that everything takes forever! About 12 years in, and still quite a large, untouched, unscenic'd (is that a word) area remains.... Tony
  9. Spent an enjoyable day with Andy (thegreenhowards) yesterday, followed by a less enjoyable couple of hours on the M25, but no matter! - Andy many thanks for your hospitality and assistance with some Mousa Models coach sides - of which more in due course! I was able to collect the L12 that Andy has put so much effort into, and today she got 'decaled' and sprayed with Testor's Dullcote: She is a fine looking loco and now just a few details remain - clack valves & related pipework, cab interior, back-head & floor, crew, headcode discs, & of course weathering, but I am very pleased with her and especially to mark off another one from the "missing" list! With the E6-X now going through some similar final detailing, the "missing" list now looks like this - I really must finish that Kirtley R! : Missing locos where the solution is now in hand (2): LB&SCR Billinton E5X (4) - 3D printed body now ordered from Shapeways + SEF E5 chassis kit in hand SECR Kirtey R (18) - assembly (by me) at advanced stage from SE Finecast R1 kit Missing locos where a potential solution has been identified (10): SECR Wainwright B1 (16) - a Jidenco kit exists but I can't find one (and it may not be that great!) LB&SCR Billinton B4X (12) - potential solution through a 3D printed body under exploration LSWR Drummond C14 (3) - potential solution = CSP / Agenoria kit announced years ago but yet to be delivered LB&SCR Marsh D3X (1) - potential solution through indication of a forthcoming 3D printed body, chassis to be sourced LB&SCR Billinton E4X (4)- potential solution through a 3D printed body + RTR Bachmann E4 chassis under exploration SECR Wainwright F1 (9) - solution = Jidenco kit held but not yet in build (& may be difficult / lacking accuracy) SR Maunsell I1X (18) - potential solution through a 3D printed body explored + Alan Gibson milled chassis frames in hand LSWR Drummond S11 (10) - further set of L12 body parts requested + SE Finecast T9 chassis in hand for modification (think T9 with large boiler & smaller wheels) Soton Dock Co. 0458 (1) - possible solution to modify CSP Agenoria kit CSP 04 identified & kit now obtained DS75 (1) - exploring possible solution via newly drawn etches Missing locos where no solution has yet been identified (3): LB&SCR Marsh C3 (8) KESR 0-8-0T Hecate (1) Fowler diesel shunter (2) Ideas, especially on the last 3 are always welcome! Finally, I have also made some scenic progress in the area to the south of Churminster Station, where the line curves away to the left and passes Churminster Quarry: This area has been completely untouched until now, and it was still possible to see under the raised baseboard to the left, through to the Lower Fiddle Yard; this gap is now blocked, and so the operator (me) will have to rely upon "instruments" when moving this to and from that Fiddle Yard, which is no longer visible! This is the current view north from the road bridge, back towards Churminster Station (running lines to the left covered with card & other materials & quarry buildings removed): Next step will be to apply plaster bandage and develop a rock face of some sort adjacent to the narrow gauge line that operates within the quarry. Tony
  10. Thanks Wickham Green. I'll certainly think about it, but as I am a Southern modeller - and these vans will just be on a 'visiting' train, I was hoping to avoid extending my library into LMS territory! Tony
  11. I have just built two of the Chivers LMS 6wheel express fish vans - and excellent models they are! - but I am struggling to find a picture of a prototype in LMS era livery. Can anyone help me as to where exactly the numbers and letters go, and what they say, e.g. "LMS", or "FISH" ? I model '38 - '48 so BR era livery is not what I need, but of course there are plenty of pictures of that! The Chivers instructions state that the vans should be in crimson lake but not how they were lettered. Any help appreciated! Tony
  12. Comparison with the original really shows what you have achieved! Tony
  13. And me too - but then I was born and lived on a long electrified part of the SR and I went to school by train (usually EPB). What was rare or unusual for us was to see steam at all - even the Golden Arrow and Night Ferry were electric loco hauled. (Nevertheless, I mainly model steam!). Tony
  14. Hi Mick I really like what you are doing here, but perhaps when you are finished you could contrast this with what you would do in 4mm - which would be, I suspect, somewhat less. Tony
  15. Thanks Adrian, that means a lot. I am a great admirer of your work on the Westerham Branch! Tony
  16. Thanks - I tend to feel that what is most difficult is to lightly weather a loco or whatever - heavy weathering is far easier, especially since when using the airbrush it is sometimes difficult to see that any paint has gone on at all - until you stand the loco next to a pristine one. Mick Bonwick is always stressing to me that 'less is more', which is certainly true but sometimes difficult to achieve! Tony
  17. Mike Thanks - I think all it needed was a smoke generator to create a general fug around the shed! Tony
  18. I'm just amazed! I had totally written this loco off! Tony
  19. I have not been completely idle in the three weeks since my last update, although various other responsibilities have ended to get in the way of railway modelling! After a little more weathering I have finally reached the point where I can entirely populate the front of Churminster Shed with weathered locos: From left to right, the back of a black motor, West Country, N class mogul, Battle of Britain, and a Bulleid Q1 - there's also a Brighton K class tucked in behind the West Country. The trainspotter's view from the end of the platforms at Churminster Station also reveals that there is an S15 taking coal: Meanwhile a frontal view of the shed shows that there is a further Bulleid Pacific towards the back, in the process of being turned: Despite the effort expended, it is fair to say that there may well be locos inside the shed, and in the storage roads to the left of the turntable that still await their turn with the airbrush! Nevertheless, there are other locos and some complete trains in service elsewhere on the layout that have also been "improved" with a touch of weathering, and over at the station an M7 simmers in the bay platform, ready to depart with the local pull-push service: This latter set has been expertly weathered by Mick Bonwick. As night falls, not much is moving on shed: Tony
  20. Andy thanks! The L12 is looking amazingly shiny - but nothing that a coat of Testor's will not dull down once we have the lettering done. The clack looks fine from here, but we can take a closer look when I am down your way next week. I am most grateful for the work you have put into this. Another one (almost) off the list! Tony
  21. Well the Missenden weekend is long gone, and very enjoyable it was too! - thoroughly recommended (no connection etc) - but things have been rather hectic since then and I only got around to unpacking everything this weekend. I managed to weather about 10 coaches, 3 locos and 6 oil tanks during the course and so it was well worthwhile, simply from the perspective of having so much dedicated modelling time. Here are a few of the coaches - these are all from a Maunsell low-window Southampton boat set built 1928, running with an Ironclad Restaurant Car, no.7854, and I chose to weather the underframes and roof only for this set - excepting the bogie luggage van on the back which is rather more filthy! The models are all from Phoenix / BSL kits: I suspect the lettering on the Restaurant Car is incorrect, although I think the wording is right for the period modelled: Although the set was built under a single order, for use on the Southampton boat trains, it did not seem to receive a set number and all of the coaches ran as "loose": The bogie luggage van, is the odd man out, being from the old Triang / Hornby model, but upgraded with the Roxey Mouldings kit - but it was malachite underneath - honest!: I couldn't manage to get the whole train into one shot but it certainly looks better weathered than not - to my eyes at least! Tony
  22. I recognise each of the phases of a railway modellers life that have been mentioned by others - I was given a Triang trainset for my 4th birthday which lived on the carpet and then on a flexible sheet of harboard. It went through a series of transitions ending up on a permanent baseboard inside an old brick-built air-raid shelter in my parents back garden, but all of this came to a (temporary) end when I was about 12 or 13 and discovered that girls were more interesting! There have been 3 separate layouts at distinct stages since - all built to stay at home and all tending to be as large and complex as possible (clearly that is my weakness); the first was a blue diesel era layout built in what was a large loft conversion, then after a move I started a Southern Railway layout on baseboards set up in a living room that didn't get much other use. This was scrapped after a house move, and then finally I got my purpose built railway room in 2005 and have been working on what I imagine will be my "project of a lifetime" ever since. It is large and overly complex, and whilst it does not represent a prototype I hope that it is prototypical; my knowledge of what that means has improved vastly over recent years and so things that were acceptable when I started are now verboten. I have just completed adding tail lamps to every train, plus corridor connections to all of those that need them, every loco has real coal, a crew and head code discs since it is a Southern Railway layout (as the layout has storage for 75 complete trains these are not small tasks). I am not a loco builder, although I own a number of kit-built locos, however, I turn my hand to just about everything else; nevertheless, after some lessons and coaching from Mr Wright I can say that I have now built 3 locos, the third of which is just reaching completion. It is a SR, ex-LBSCR E6-X (one of only two) from a Shapeways 3D printed body and a South Eastern Finecast E6 chassis: It runs well but as can be seen, the surface of the 3D print is never going to match brass or RTR injection moulding, despite this being the higher grade of print offered by Shapeways, but as a layout loco it looks the part at normal viewing distance and since there were only two prototypes, this is never going to appear as a kit or RTR model - so I am happy! Tony
