  1. Java - on the way out? Better tell the millions of developers using it, not to mention that the web runs on it. Oracle has changed the licencing model for developers and that means that some of their development kits need updating to meet the current security demands, but that  doesn't mean Java is 'on the way out'.

Hi, I’m not an expert by any means on how the web works. The point I was trying to make is that my browsers do not support it. If they don’t support it then i am unable to install Itrain - what’s your thoughts/advice as it is clear that Java is not going to be supported by modern browsers.

    Thanks

  2. Hi, I downloaded and had a quick browse of the itrain manual and off I went to download a trial version of Itrain and got nowhere fast. Apparently Java seems to be needed and by all accounts it seems to be a product on the way out. My browsers Firefox and Edge do not support it, something to do with, inter Alia, security issues such as malware attacks. I could use Explorer but I am concerned that this will eventually be obsolete and I’ve been there before with no support and it’s not a good place to be. I wonder if the itrain developers are working to overcome this? Can anybody shed light on this?

    Thanks

    Alan

  3. Depends on what need - ALL command and control functionality is provided within the Standard package but it will only support one interface - which isn’t an issue if you only have one controller :) - if you want the multiple screen capability, or decoder programming (which isn’t very clever anyway) then you need to buy the other versions or (assuming you have one interface) start with the Standard and buy an upgrade to another version later (the upgrade is simply the costs between versions).

Also, get the trial for a 2 months which has everything and decide what you need and make the decision at the end of the trial

Feel free to ask any more questions or PM me :)

That’s sound advice, I’ll do the homework and make a decision after evaluating it. Thanks for offering to help

  4. YEp, both of them can be done using actions.

I have sounds that I trigger when a train receives a conmand to move e.g. platform announcements, I could have it when it arrives or when it is passing through a block. Entering a tunnel would just be the same thing - it is a block of track :)

As for braking, you can set the braking to start as a train enters the block, at a specific point in the block are ignore it - you can also stop the train anywhere in the block or centre it on a platform.

You could also set the maximum speed for a specific block, or a train or a loco

All the functions are there :)

That’s great, thanks for the quick response. I think it’s going to be I train for me - seems to offer much better value for the money. Would you recommend the Standard or Plus version?

    Thanks

  5. Hi, is it possible in I Train to trigger an action in a loco eg if it enters a section with a tunnel can it automatically blow the loco’s horn? I think this is possible in TC9 with the use of flagmen?

Also, in TC 9 you can set a breaking section when a loco enters a block, does I Train do this?

I too am weighing up the option between the 2 systems.

    Thanks

    Alan

  6. Hi I’m interested to know where this photo was taken and what the DMU pictured is. Can you help? Thanks

  7. No, the initial question remains.

I excluded DCC and sound because I prefer to judge the modelling quality, not the gimmickry.

I’m sorry, I fail to see how DCC is “gimmick”. For me the ability to run multiple locos on the same track as well as have locos in the sidings, yards etc all with lights on or off as desired, stationary or moving, is all part of the fun and makes it a much more enriching experience. Also the ability to “drive” a loco, especially with modern decoders is great fun. I don’t understand your position - don’t knock it until you try it is my mottoI saw a family today watching a DCC shunting layout by Scarborough Model Railway Club and the young person was totally enthralled with the sounds coming from the SLW Class 24 - a beautiful model too if I may add. The hobby needs to move forward and embrace new technology but if you want to stick to DC then that’s your rightful choice.

  8. Unfortunately I am not getting good customer service from Digitrains anymore as they have decided to ignore my email in regard to my problem, a problem which I highlighted for the benefit of others here but which has been removed.

Obviously this forum does not do transparency.

If you remove my posts at least have the decency to inform me.

I am owed money and everyone should be aware.

I’ve had very good service from this business, on more than one occasion, so am a little surprised at your predicament. Obviously I don’t know what your issue is but there are potential remedies. You are protected under the Distance Selling Regs and if your purchase is over 100 gbp and you paid with a credit card then you may have some recourse - apologies if you are aware of this already. I hope you can get this resolved amicably.

  9. It's a hobby to be enjoyed. Why all this "DCC is better" "DC is better" "DCC has this disadvantage" "DC has that disadvantage" " My favourite football team is better than your team" "My Dad can beat your Dad"

Anyway I have one of each. A DCC two rail layout that I really enjoy and a Hornby Dublo 3 rail DC layout that I also really enjoy.

Both have lots of wires. ;)

    Hear here

  10. Can't fault your efforts towards customer service.

Puts me in mind of my last (ever) visit to Comet some 30 years ago, it was suggested by the sales prevention assitant that we "hurry up and make your purchase, we close in 5 minutes". Can't think why it they went bust.

Whilst their comment about hurrying up was rather crass I think one should be mindful that they are paid to work a certain number of hours and they have the right to go home when they are due to finish - they will not get paid overtime to stay and complete your potential purchase. I shopped in Comet for many a year and always had good service. I’m sure there were a series of reasons for them going bust ....just saying
