This was the 'infamous' All Blacks tour that saw them beaten 9-3 at Stradey, and Keith Murdoch sent home in disgrace - never to arrive in New Zealand but to disappear into the Australian bush, never to play rugby again. . 4. Sandy.I suspect it's intended as an attempt at humour, as 'nhy581' is a work colleague, where it is accepted that both I, and my brother 'naturol' have the ability to be a little on the loud side !!.As I was unable to attend this years show, and my brother also undertook duties on the door, I've no doubt 'nhy581' is referring to the relative peace and quiet emanating from the rear of the layout..You can rest assured 'nhy581' will be dealt with in an appropriate manner..Brian R

  6. Nidge Several of the Padds that day were hauled by 'thousands' and although we went there to see 'KGV' ( which I'd discovered by accident undergoing repair in Newport Docks sometime earlier) - my abiding memory of the day were 'thousands' on down expresses tearing up the bank out of 'the hole' and bouncing like mad. Hard to imagine that forty years on, there would only be one 'thousand' on the main line, yet steam on the main line is an almost daily occurrence ! Brian .
  7. Severn Tunnel Jct (station, yard and shed) 2nd. October, 1971 A historic day - the return of main line steam in the shape of 6000 King George V Cl.25 5182, 5228+5268, Cl.37 6781, 6788, 6996 Cl.42 806 Cl.45/6 60, 85, 104, 107, 114, 140. 156 Cl.47 1602, 1604, 1610, 1648, 1656, 1661, 1667, 1903, 1909, 1918 Cl.52 1000, 1028, 1047, 1055, 1058,1062, 1068, 1072 Cl.35 7000 ,7070, 7080, 7084, 7092 Cl.08 3806, 3990, 4162, 4170
  8. Why not "Duffryn" - that's to the west of Newport ? . Or, if you want to twist the tongues of the 'saes' try "Spytty Park" or "Spytty Road" as homage to 'the County' (riding high at the top of the Blue Square Conference). . As for the xr3i - I'm sure i had my head under it's bonnet once, and pulled the carpet back away from the cill on the drivers side - to check the VIN plates. . Brian R
  9. Craig Bellamy . To many fans, he's like Marmite - they either love him or loath him. . But when he scores ................ check out todays stunner against Leeds Utd. . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lYrHelGy28 . Brian R
  10. I've now seen as many photos of a model version of this type of wagon as I have seen shots of the prototype - I think, my only photo is in one of Jim Russell's books...... unless there is one lurking in one Dave Larkin's ?I don't recall seeing one in the flesh - which makes this project all the more interesting !Brian R
  11. Saturday 9th September, 1972. For those interested, Villa won 2-0 . Brian R
  12. You built well tanks - back in the day ?
  13. In my first week 'on the beat' in August, 1979 my tutor took me to Burrell's - a shop in Wilson Road, Ely where the owner had unearthed several boxes of circa 1960 Hornby Dublo (2 and 3-rail) and Tri-Ang stock, all boxed (mint) with their pre-decimal prices affixed. . They were offered to me, at the 'face value' .......................... . If only I hadn't declined, and salted them away. . Brian R PS I think the shop behind the now St Davids centre may have been 'Wiesbards' - the old man used to take me there (long before 'naturol' was born ..... 35 my buttocks) to buy parts for dolls houses and forts he used to make as a 'sideline'.
  14. So, mid 40s and he still believes in Santa ? Brian R (his big brother)
  15. Newport's railways - as they used to be .......... . (From an old map I have, the provenance of which is unknown). . NOTES The Courtybella - Llanarth St. line via salutation Jct ran alongside Cardiff Road for part of its' length, and was abandoned many, many years ago. The Ebbw Jct steam shed/workshop is shown, not the later diesel depot. . Brian R
  16. 'Barry Ten' appears to have changed his writing genre, and gone in for guide books ! . I fully concur with the content of your post - especially as IA, Modelzone and Antics form part or all of my lunchtime exercise route around the city centre, during which it is not uncommon to collide with other RMwebbers !. . The displays in all three are worthy of passing attention, and occasionally show bargains that match certain box-shifters even taking p+p into account. . Brian R . PS 'Bud Morgan' ? I didn't think you were 'that old' ....... did you ever frequent the original shop in the Castle Arcade ? or even 'The Model Shop' formerly in Mill Lane (but now a 'sex shop' !!). PPS What about the shop that 'survived' in Broadway, Roath for a few years - most of the punters having been frightened off by the attitude of the proprietor !
  17. Alexandra Dock Jct. / Maesglas / Mon. (Monmouthshire) Bank were a few of the yards to the west of Newport......East Usk yard mainly served the Uskmouth Branch and to a lesser degree the Nettlefolds Branch........ East Usk is still used for (Freightliner) coal trains to run around in order to access Uskmouth Power Station at the far end of the Uskmouth Branch; and also for DB(S) steel trains to/from Llanwern to access the branch when carrying steel import/export traffic to/from Birdport, for which propelling move I believe a brake van is (or was) still kept at east Usk. ...... Brian R
  18. Just to show 'naturol' was really at Swansea today . . . . . . . . . Unfortunately two less than happy grandsons and a disinterested wife foreshortened my visit - but not after MIB Models had relieved me of some folding stuff ! . Brian R
  19. 1st September, 2006. . A day 'photting' around Hamilton, Ont. . Brian R . PS I didn't think this thread is limited to the UK - or is it ?

  24. Nidge. Having an idea that our 'mystery' destination was somewhere in the 'West Country' and the hydraulics day's were numbered was the only reason a fifteen year old went on a daytrip with his parents and six year old brother (also it didn't eat into my Saturday job wages !)..It appears that out of those recorded on the Teignmouth trip ;- 811, 842, 845 & 862 at least, were working. That summer Warships had a regular working into Cardiff from Paignton, including:- 844 - 29/05/71, 862 - 24/06/71, 855 - 30/06/71, 832 - 25/07/71, 845 - 14/08/71, 855 - 21/08/71. Come 23/10/71 and several of us 'bunked' Marsh Jct where the following 'Warships' were in store:- 808, 815, 819, 822, 831, 833, 843, 844, 845, 854, 855, 857, 858, 865, 868, 869.In addition, 811 was stabled at Severn Tunnel Jct that day.Brian
