  1. More than likely - as this was a 16:30 departure from Bristol, and the Pengam - Coatbridge was an early evening departure also. Brian R

  3. Quite an accurate portrayal of the prototype then ! . Does it scream when struggling with 50+ SLU's on the back, like the one I used to watch each morning in 1969 on the Long Dyke, Penarth Curve and Radyr trip. . . . . . or even burst into flames . . . . . now that would be a task for a DCC expert. . Your efforts are excellent Stu. Brian R.
  4. Good going Pix . Did the 'nine-fiver' enjoy its' outing to Parkend ? . Brian
  5. "Gulf Oil" - Cardiff Docks, who initially purchased D9530 from BR in 1969 in order to shunt this terminal. It's not known whether or not the loco was ever used there, as it appears to have gone straight to Waterston refinery in west Wales, and was later sold to the NCB. . There were a couple of terminals located on the branch from Grangetown (Cardiff) alongside Ferry Road to the Ely Tidal Harbour. By the mid-70s a Radyr based Cl.08 would work to Penarth Curve North and three paths were available through the day onto the Ferry Road branch, where one terminal was shunted by a Planet loco owned by South Wales Warehouses. Rationalisation saw the branch truncated, and the terminal siding moved closer to Grangetown station - final closure came around 1983. . Finally, one that 'bucked the trend' - the 'Minimet' terminal on Cardiff's foreshore, and alongside the Queen Alexandra Dock entrance lock lost its rail business several years ago, until a DB(S) operated Lindsey OR train started up again at the back end of 2010, with the Cl.66 working straight to the terminal, negating the need for a Tidal pilot - as shwon in this shot of 08689 shunting the terminal on 9th June, 2005, just before rail traffic ceased. . 7. I don't know how some of these plans would scan as pdf documents. Reading thro' the list I have spotted a few omissions e.g a Hunslet 'flameproof' 0-4-0D for the NCB which I know I have from a 1950s MRN or MRC, but can't put my finger on it ! Brian R

  9. So, the next batch of Class 70 locos will be coming from "the east" and not "the west". . http://www.railwaygazette.com/nc/news/single-view/view/tuelomsas-rolls-out-turkish-powerhaul.html . Brian R
  10. Al, . Will it have 'Zoar' or 'Bethel' or 'Salem' over the entrance ? . Something I've never seen modelled before - I can hear the Cor Meibion Trepayne practising inside, it sounds like Handel's Messiah again this week ! . Brian
  11. In the days when the preserved 8750 pannier, 9642, was kept at Maesteg, it ran with a 'Toad' converted to a sort of observation coach set-up, could this have been the vehicle, or another 'toad' again ?. On the subject of 'Toads' - ADW35377 was purchased by Allied Steel & Wire (ASW) at Tremorfa and fitted with lighting, a compressor, jacks, beams and packing - renumbered RR1 and used for re-railing within the works. Shame it wasn't available this week when GBRf operated 08925 hit the dirt ! ASW also bought two BR vans B954532 & B954734 for use in tours around the company's rail network. Unfortunately these never came about, B954532 was gutted by fire, and both were scrapped after ASW went to the wall in 2002.Brian R
  12. Ian, The NCB did operate brake vans on some of it's systems, most notably the Wemyss system in Scotland, where they had a couple of ex Midland Railway brakes amongst others. . They also used brake vans on the Littleton Colliery branch in Staffs. . I've no doubt there were others . Brian
  13. Richard,

At the moment I'm tidying my little library (a 5'0" square outhouse) and putting more shelves up. Once I've done that, I'll dig out what info I have and my recollections, and sent you some more. Let me know what else you need to know ?

  14. 1..... Augher Valley, David Lloyd . 2..... Marthwaite, and it's "Long Drag" successors, David Jenkinson . 3..... Borchester, Frank Dyer . There may be layouts around today that have achieved greater realism, better running and superior operation, BUT the question was 'what inspired you'. . As for continued inspiration, the series of articles produced by the "LMS Society" which appeared in the Railway Modeller form circa 1964 take some beating. Not only was there "LMS wagons" but numerous articles on LMS coaching stock, and some classes of loco. Combine these, with the LNWR inspired works of J.K. "Jack" Nelson and there are some great articles, the likes of which you don't see today. Brian R

    14xx upgrade

Al. Those detail parts originated with Iain Riceover twenty years ago, and they still are the best available. . They featured in an old MRJ article about detailing and finescaling the 14XX, which included the construction of a P4 chassis. A very good article, over two issues IIRC by Messrs Rice and Neep. Will it be a replica of a Llantrisant - Penygraig shuttle ? Or closer to the metropolis, the Cathays 14XX that plied up to North Rd and Maindy halts ? . Good work, as Western as you can get, keep it up. Brian
  18. Never Modelling railways is not just about locos and wagons, THIS is what makes a model railway. More please. Brian R
  19. You may be right. I was driving past, and came upon the place by accident, circa early 90s. Didn't make a note of where I was (very unusual for me). Brian R

  21. At today's Rangers v Celtic match, 1st. January 2011, a ceremony will be held to mark the 40th anniversary of the tragedy at Ibrox stadium that occurred during the Auld Firm derby on 2nd. January, 1971. They say you can always remember where you were, or what you were doing when you heard of certain tragedies e.g. the assasination of John F. Kennedy, the death of Elvis Presley or the Princess of Wales. Well, I was at Sheffield Midland waiting to return to Cardiff after a day bashing Toton & Tinsley when we overheard railwaymen discussing what had happened. In those days there was no 24hrs news coverage such as we have today, and things were still sketchy. It was only when we arrived home did we appreciate the loss of so many lives. Forty years on, this is what we recorded on that fateful day, 2nd. January, 1971. Cardiff – Toton & Tinsley 2nd. January, 1971. The trick was to buy a cheap day return to Birmingham, and then pay excess fare from New St. to Sheffield as by some quirk this worked out cheaper ! This meant the 07:10 DMU to Gloucester and change to a SW - NE Peak hauled service, alighting at Derby for a local DMU to Stapleford & Sandiacre, and then a walk along the waters edge in order to bunk Toton. Tinsley was a busride, alighting at the 'Three Magpies' pub, and a walk across the access bridge, followed by a full frontal assault. A week earlier I had been blessed with a new Kodak Instamatic camera as a Christmas present, and the monochrome film, poor light produced but few half decent shots that day. 22. Al . I'm told you can get half-scale flying replicas starting at £150k ! . Many moons ago when I was living at home, I was outside with my dad one afternoon when for no apparent reason he exclaimed 'Merlins' !! . I asked what he meant, and he just stood there. . A few seconds later, flying north east over cardiff came the battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Hurri, Lanc & Spit. . The 'old man' appeared to grow an inch or two, then turned and said "once heard, never forgotten" . Brian
  23. Dilbert, I don't need a lecture, try being Welsh and having our neighbours. You know, the ones that tell a Welshman "I went to wales on holiday once, they're so rude, you walk into a pub, or a shop and they're alll speaking Welsh." . You know, the holiday makers from 'Essex' who don't like the Welsh to speak their mother tongue in their homeland, but don't complain when they pop into Mr Patel's shop to buy 'The Sun' he's speaking to his wife in Gudjarati, or when he buys a kebab, the man carving it speaks to his colleagues in Kurdish or when he calls into the 'China Sea' Take Away, the staff are chattering in Cantonese. You know, the same folk who extract the urine out of words we Welsh have adopted, and modified e.g. 'ambiwlans' or 'bws' but have forgotten that their whole language is a mixture of latin, Greek, French and any number of Indo-germanic tongues. Perhaps this is another reason FIFA looked elsewhere - after all there's no such 'ignorance' in Russia, they're such a fun loving, gregarious nation. Brian R
