  6. The LNWR Coalport Branch - Part 1 After the construction of the Wellington and Severn Junction Railway (W&SJR) and it being included in the GWR network, the LNWR found it necessary to take an interest in the Shropshire Canal as an alternative means of accessing the area. The industrial areas immediately North of the River Severn were served by a whole series of tramroads which linked to the River Severn or to the Shropshire Canal and eventually to the W&SJR. Increasing problems with the Shropshire Canal led the LNWR to conclude that it needed to replace it, and the Coalport Branch was the result. This is the first of a series of articles about the line: http://rogerfarnworth.com/2023/03/14/the-railways-of-telford-the-coalport-branch-of-the-lnwr-part-1-hadley-to-malins-lee-station/
  7. Since publishing a series of articles about the Micklehurst Loop, I have, over the past couple of years, kept my eye open for interesting shots of the line. 8. The Peak Forest Tramway - Part 1. .... Before we moved to Telford at the end of 2021, we walked part of the length of the Peak Forest Tramway. 9. One very early Tramroad was set up to transport products of the Lilleshall Company from their heart lands around Oakengates and further North down to Sutton Wharf on the River Severn. The tramroad was active by 1799 and closed by 1815. Closure resulted from an agreement with the Shropshire Canal to transport Lilleshall goods to the River Severn at a reduced rate. The main run of this Tramroad is covered in the article below. ... http://rogerfarnworth.com/2023/02/25/early-tramroads-near-telford-part-9-the-lilleshall-company-tramroad-running-from-sutton-wharf-through-the-area-east-of-malinslee-through-hollinswood-and-oakengates-and-the-companys-early-inte
  10. Railways Around Bridgnorth again. ..... South of Bridgnorth in the valley of the River Severn were a series of collieries and associated sidings: Alveley Sidings and Alveley Colliery with a private railway/aerial ropeway; Highley Station; Highley Colliery & Sidings; The Billingsley Railway & Collery; and Kinlet Colliery and Sidings. These locations were all within the Wyre Forest Coalfield. All were connected to the GWR Severn Valley Railway (SVR). 11. Thank you! I have changed what I can! The link to the article, once set up, cannot be changed on Wordpress. I have just tried! I appreciate you taking the trouble to correct me. It is right elsewhere in the article!
  12. I have spent some time at the beginning of 2023 finding out as much as I can about the railways which served collieries either side of the River Severn and which were served by the Severn Valley Railway. Years before the Severn Valley Railway was constructed tramroads brought coal and othe mine arisings down the the river for distribution around the country. The Tramroad served wharves on the river and Severn Trows took the load downstream. This first article is about the Billingsley Plateway. ..... http://rogerfarnworth.com/2023/02/11/railways-around-bridgenorth-part-1

  16. Part 10 - An overview of the East Shropshire Area's Tramroad Network I have been asked to give a talk at one of the meetings of the Friends of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust about the tramroads/tramways in East Shropshire. I have begun preparation and drafted some notes which may be of interest to others. R.F. Savage and L.D.W. Smith wrote a thesis entitled, The Waggon-ways and Plate-ways of East Shropshire in 1965. Their work was well- timed as it recorded circumstances existing in the years before the development company began major work to rehabilitate the area and many industrial features were lost. I have begun the process of walking all of the old tramroad routes identified by Savage and Smith. The link gives some idea of the work that Savage and Smith undertook and a link to the detailed notes which give an overview of the tramroads/tramways of the area. http://rogerfarnworth.com/2023/01/22/ancient-tramroads-near-telford-part-10-an-overview-of-the-east-shropshire-areas-tramroad-network
