Presumably you kept the new kitten in the house for at least two weeks before letting it outside? This is what was originally recommended to us, and it has worked four times so far (or, perhaps we are still buying the right brand of cat food!)

My new cat came in, made a beeline for the sofa. but hes litter trained, good temprament and eats and obeys commands well. Hop yours is just as lovely/easy.
