  1. Hi all,

I'm hoping to get some retaining walls laser cut in 2mm to represent the area around Farringdon Station:

I've seen plenty of people cutting bricks to good effect on this site, but I was wondering if anyone had more specific information or photos about the bricks and the retaining walls around Farringdon? Especially regarding the height of the walls and the size of the bricks, but any information is greatly appreciated! Unfortunately I don't live close enough by to make a field trip  :scratchhead:

Final question, when designing the brick pattern, does anyone have advice relating to the thickness of the mortar? Should I just aim to mortar cut at the minimum width?

    Thanks all!

  2.

Sydney took inspiration and copied the idea-

And the Gold Coast liked it so much they decided to run through two buildings!

Sadly both of these systems recently closed down.

  3. I may get around to revising the 165/166 units one day so they have 'opened out' windows, but there'll be no more 'new' 3D stuff from me.

Shapeways has become too expensive and I'd rather spend my time doing some actual modelling rather than computing and spending money testing stuff that is unlikely to get used by anyone.

Opening them out would use less plastic and make them cheaper, but they're already cheaper than the N-train ones, but then if you open out the windows, where do you stick the vinyls?

    Cheers,

    Paul

I for one am very grateful for all your 3D printing efforts- your models were the reason I switched to N gauge, and one day (time and funds permitting) I hope to make a few! Alas my attempt at a 455/8 has not gone so well, courtesy of my ignorance of Sketchup's tempermental nature!

  4. Hi Matt

In the space you've got I can't help feeling you would be better off in N! The 319 is only due in N from Farish.  The 350s (also available in N) run through Willesden and certainly used to run through Kensington Olympia (some are dual voltage).

    Cheers, Mike

There's also a reasonable range of 3D printed N gauge EMU bodies available too if you look on Shapeways. From what I've found you can get 313s, 508s, 365/465/466s, 377/379/387s, 378s and there's 455s and a few other units in the works. These can all be fairly easily motorised with a Tomytec chassis or by clipping the bodies onto a 170 chassis. And this is on top of the 319 and 321 units coming soon in RTR and the 350 already available. Obviously a change of scale isn't easy (or cheap), but there's a much wider range of London-based stock available!
