Where my Mother-in-Law lives, in rural Poland, houses tend to be numbered in the order they were built.

We were confused in the Czech Republic with buildings displaying postal numbers and, I think, land registry numbers.

Unlike some European countries where many towns have conference venues, in the UK we are reliant on using schools, colleges and leisure centres,

One of my pet complaints in the UK, many quite modest towns in the rest of Europe have dedicated, quality,  exhibition venues, my large home town of Medway has none, I'll get off the soap box now.

  3. Not just the English who expect others to speak their language, just on our way back from a holiday on the Polish Baltic coast, most guests were German, some Polish, I was the only Briton, we booked with a German travel agent, staff quite emotionless and reluctant to speak German, but lit up when my wife used her limited Polish, at six years old she had to forget her native Polish and learn German very quickly, when the family escaped to Germany.

I think fulton was thinking of jobs like road laying, where a tipper lorry advances slowly, discharging its load evenly on to the road behind it.

I was thinking of general construction, where a load of, say sand, does not all slide out, some sticks behind, making the body top heavy, particually a problem with artic tippers.

Perhaps because a tipper is required to frequently move with the bed raised in the process of the daily work.

In my building site experiance, a tipper with a raised bed is very unstable, cases of lorries tipping over if load does not fully discharge, I think very bad practice to have bed raised, takes no efford to raise or lower, except a little time.

I think ultimately the goal of ULEZ is a more worth concern than the odd extra expense.

Agree, I just want to highlight and remember the personal consequences to ordinary people, there are many model railway clubs, plus alsorts of other clubs, near the edge of the zone who have a catchment area that extends beyond.

  7. Londons ULEZ Ultra Low Emissions Zone is due to be extended later this year to the whole of London, not wishing to go into all the arguments about this, I was reflecting on how this will effect our hobby, talking to someone at EXPOEM, he lives just outside the new zone, but attends a club just inside, he is not willing or able to buy a new vehicle, so each visit would cost £12.50 which he cannot afford, I live outside the zone but visit exhibitions, which will soon be inside, fortunatly I have a ULEZ compliant vehicle, EURO 6, but how many others will be put off attending by the £12.50 charge. Also an exhibition could be faced with extra expenses if inviting a layout from outside the zone, I have already been asked about my vehicle for an exhibition I am attending in December. I do not want to rant, but just wish to make people aware of the changes.

And that is the way it should be...but this is Scotland 😀

To give another example, my neighbour lives in the farmhouse and has rotten windows, she needs to replace them as the sliding sashes are now screwed shut and taped up. The conservation officer wants a 'like for like' re-installed which can easily be done with the same pattern mouldings, double glazed units and high performance draught strip.

Unfortunately the officer actually wants identical windows including single glazing.  My buildings are 9 feet away and I have triple glazed high performance windows. I could understand if the listing was category A, but we're only a C. My neighbour has sent documentation to show just how much oil she is burning to keep the house at 18/19C (£3000 per year) but the officer says that the living conditions aren't part of her remit.

Scots politicians want to be carbon neutral quicker than anywhere else, but haven't actually thought about what you need to do to get there.

While visiting a conservation area in north Germany, one of the features was large barn type buildings with red clay tile roofs, except today almost all covered with solar panels, seems a practical approach.

One I will offer an opinion on to illustrate this is banning household coal,

Areas may vary, where I live in Kent, house coal is banned, but not smokeless coal, such as Anthracite, which I burn.

  10. Not odd at all, I always imagined I would like a home layout to operate, had a permanent garage layout for twenty years, in practice it was only operated when friends came round, almost never by myself, what I really enjoy is building models, layouts, ships and aircraft. I also enjoy exhibiting, can operate all day and chat to visitors, exhibiting can be physically hard work, especially getting older, owned a box trailer in the past, now own a van, which takes away all the pressure of loading, unloading before and after a show.

  11. I had two Digitrax AR1s on my , now gone, garage layout, one an a return loop and one on a turntable, followed the instructions, seemed straight forward, as far as I can remember, they worked for 15 years, near the end if I had not operated for a few weeks, there was a sound like a relay sticking, once it had thrown, it worked as normal.

  12. I've had very good results, both spraying and brushing, been using Ammo Mig and Tamiya paints, am sure other brands just as good, Ammo Mig do some excellent tutorials on line, I use Halfords rattle can primer, good adhesion to all surfaces, always dries with a very thin coat, even where I've been a bit heavy handed.

    Just for info on this.

When using a pedestrian crossing in Poland, you must wait for the green man signal.

Crossing on red might get you a fine.

Just because you have a green, it doesn't mean all traffic has a red.

Thank you for the timely info, as we are driving to the Polish Baltic coast in two weeks, stopping at Dusseldorf and Hamburg on the way.

    That's debateable.

A friend told me about a couple of foreign ladies, at a set of traffic lights, with a call button for the pedestrian lights.

    Looking like this.

Apparently they spoke in their native tongue to each other, while pointing at the device. But then just ran across the road anyway!

This design, you press the circular button, the LED to it's top left comes on and the sequence starts. Note the arrow, also has a raised area to assist blind people and it gives different audible tones as well.

Not sure what can be done to make it clearer, as to it's operation.

A bit off topic, we came across a similar crossing in Poland, we waited for the green signal, which came, only problem was that the traffic did not stop, similarly there were black and white crossing markings, which I think meant "Try Crossing Here", you just had to take your chance!

  15. I to have been pleased with items from Severn Models, enjoyed soldering them together, this is my take on the platelayers hut, used Scalescenes brick to match my other buildings, and a Modelu chimney pot.

With TV aerials, they should all generally point the same way, or in some cases two directions.

A whole subject to get correct for your chosen period and location! as a child in the 60s we had a large H shape aerial on a wooden pole in the garden, I can remember the first "BBC2 type" aerials appearing, it was quite a status symbol.
