  1. Meanwhile, 6 years later.....

Now having the same problem with my Bachmann Class 85, so it's out with the soldering iron this afternoon.  I'm more confident with the iron nowadays!

    Hi All,

A short while ago (not whilst using RMWeb) my computer (laptop) suddenly locked up with various alert screens displayed together with a continuous audible message saying "Important security message, your computer has been locked......... Please call support immediately."

The phone number quoted to call is 020-8638-6201 (Helpline-Toll-free).

It looks like a genuine Microsoft Windows firewall protection alert (on screen), but just wondered about the phone number, I thought it possibly should be a 08xx or 03xx number. Does anyone else have experience of this issue / phone number?

Just seeking some help/advice before calling the number.

    Thanks in advance.

PS - using my mobile to post this message.

Same here. Not showing as in stock on their webpage, so hopefully just slower to receive stock.

Yes, I had a quick trawl through some other shops' websites last night and many, including Gaugemaster who I thought were Heljan's distributors, are showing them still as pre-orders. Mine is ordered through Derails. Fingers crossed for delivery this coming week!

Most people seem to have gone with the TOPS versions , so I thought I’d show my latest acquisition . Rarely do I pre order anything , but when I saw the pictures in the Hornby magazine I was won over and went ahead and ordered . Thanks Rails, your normal great service .  I was originally going to go for the small yellow warning panel version but on seeing the full yellow end version , that was the one for me .

Delighted  with it . She has just done some light running but I couldn’t resist attaching her to some maroon mk1s . Beautifully quiet and smooth through speed ranges . I have limited her to about 50-60% power for most running in , but I did take her up to a very fast top speed just to see what she would do .  5 or 6 coaches is the most I usually run and she took the load with ease . I’ve no doubt she could do full length trains if required .  Seems very assured . I did fit the coupling to one end . I thought I would have to trim some of the front hoses , couplings etc but seemed to get away with it , although there is some clicking as it going round my curves . Suspect I will have to trim some of the fittings back .

I use DC and she ran brilliantly on my H&M Clipper, Hornby R910 both dating from the 70s and my main controller a Gaugemaster DS which I still call the new controller , but which must be 25 years old now!  Similarly I run on Code 100 Peco Setrack, Streamline and Hornby track and points . No issues at all .

Well done Heljan . A really great model .

Very useful review and great photos, thanks for posting. Still waiting for mine, and heard nothing grrrrr.... Mine is pre-ordered from a smaller shop. Seems like the box shifters get things in and out very fast. Seeing all these great photos from you guys I'd making me even more impatient! Only been waiting 20 odd years for a really good 86 so I suppose a few more days is okay!

Hattons sold out of banger blue TOPS too....

Now I'm getting worried. I've heard absolutely nothing about my pre-order from a smaller shop. I hope they get their allocation and are able to supply me. If everywhere else sells out I shall be very cross!

Hornby did a fine job on the 86 back in the day.

    Totally agree.

I reckon if they'd have done an upgrade on it to include a centre motor driving all wheels and a decent pantograph it would still have sold well.   It would certainly have satisfied me!

For once didn’t pre-order one of these but decided today that I needed to on the strength of this thread.  BE WARNED, they are starting to sell out (kernow have no banger blue TOPS ones left and I bought one of the last two weathered ones). Don’t hang about!

Well, now that is strange....we've been told for years that electric locos don't sell!

  9. So, fellow AC electric enthusiasts, Heljan have done us proud and given us a fantastic Class 86 with /2, /4 and /6 variants to follow.

Just an 81 now to complete the most long lived classes – c'mon Bachmann, you have your wonderful 85 as a good base already - know it makes sense!

At long last, after all these years maybe we will hear less of that old groan that electric locos “won't sell”; I have personally heard a former model magazine editor trot that out in front of manufacturer's representatives on more than one occasion.

Thanks again Heljan (and Hornby and Bachmann too actually).

20210423_131331.jpg.4816db8f0dedb23f31e84105ea105001.jpgHi chaps, here are some photos:

I'm over the moon with this. It's the 86 I was dreaming of many years back. The photos look descent but it's terrific in the flesh.

I'd say possibly my favourite out of the ac models on par with the 90. It has some nice weight too and feels like it'll do the business.

The weathering really brings out the bottom half really well - the detail is outstanding- looks very realistic and truly super detailed. (

The panto and electrics on top are the most realistic compared to other ac releases as they don't look plastic.

The buffer beam detail and front are spot on and I really like that the details are there from the off.

Only tiny thing to say is the weathering which is still really good; on the sides I manipulated just a few bits with my thumb and it's fine. I'm really fussy and would have returned it if it was anything more than a minor point, but the fronts look great with their weathering especially.

Most of all, to me, it looks right; it says class 86 with conviction. It really is a fine and lovely model.

My rake of Mark 2As (Intercity) have heart-shapes in their eyes as they have the ideal partner to pull them and be seen with on nights out.

Really, really impressed and over the moon. I'm not a rivet counting expert, but I am fussy too; can't wait for the 86/4 batch.

Well done Heljan! Fantastic work. Many years of dreaming are now reality (as an 80s ac enthusiast).

Mine came today, very impressed with it, particularly the amount of detail on the chassis. I have made a video about fitting sound to it for anyone who might be wondering what its like inside or wants to know which speakers will fit

Thanks for the tutorial Richard, very useful indeed.

Loco looks and sounds great - plus really easy sound installation.  A real winner here I think.

Picked up mine this morning and I'm really impressed, especially with the underframe detail, it really does look excellent - I'll forward some photos later. We'll done Heljan.

At first, some of the weathering was similar on mine, but I spread the odd cluster using my finger and it's fine.

Great! Really looking forward to your photos.

    Bif

    Hi Bif,

I purchased one of your new Class 121/117 chips from Charlie a few months ago, and I would like to try a couple of different horns as per above;  before I change these CV's do I need to set an index CV first like you do when adjusting lights etc?  Thanks.  Vivian.

  14. I have been enjoying this thread - I well remember blue/grey Gresley buffet cars in the 70's - travelled in them many times on BR's wonderful Merrymaker excursions from stations on the GE section.  I was in my early teens and unfortunately didn't have a camera in those days to capture them on film.

My layout is set between 1985-1995 but I just had to have Hornby's lovely model, and here it is abandoned at the end of a siding - awaiting preservation!

Several sound removed versions have appeared on Ebay, but have sold for higher prices as no doubt people don want to have to respray any exisiting ones

Yes, it's a good idea to keep an eye open for them.  I was very lucky to win one on the 'bay for £110 with sound removed.  I treated it to black window surrounds.

Bought a copy myself and see what you mean! Looks great.

Yes, and considering that photo is printed at least 3x the size of the model I reckon it looks absolutely brilliant.  The modern digital lens is unforgiving, and faults normally jump out at you, particularly when enlarged such as this.  So all very good.

  17. This morning I collected my saved copy of Hornby Magazine from my local newsagents.  Needless to say I went straight to the Heljan 86 review - and all I can say is wow!  The close up photo over pages 114 and 115 is simply stunning.  I haven't looked forward to a model release as much as this one  for a long time- very excited!

Reviving a Class 101s-in-service era topic; was there ONLY ever a double the price, all whistles and bells NSE livery Class 101 from Bachmann or is there a non digital sound, no passengers on board version to be found out there?

Yes, the only Bachmann 101 in NSE livery to date has been 32-290DS, "with fitted passenger figures and DCC sound".

Sorry this is bit delayed but I only found this tin of paint today...

As can be seen it is a tin of Cherry Scale Models BR Diesel Blue (BR RAIL BLUE) enamel paint. I bought it at the Brighton Model Show in around 1991/2....it has survived all these years tucked away in a box in the loft since we moved to our current house in 1996.  The most totally amazing thing is that is still perfectly useable after all these years...but most importantly IMHO it is the best rail blue paint for colour. It definitely does have a slightly green tint to it, particularly in natural light. Such as shame that I didn’t buy more of it back then...

Yes, to read the full article but the YT video is excellent.  I kept pausing it on full screen and it's good and clear and the model looks very good indeed.

I've looked at the HM video a good few times now, and have just pre-ordered 86 036 (8655), even though my layout is set late 1980s-early 1990s.  Been waiting years to get a decent 86, and I love the look of this Heljan one, so I will run it until the 86/2s and 86/4s come along. :)
