  1. Has anybody ever managed to find a Chinese supply of these awful 50p motors in class 17s? I have managed to source various different motors for other models for Peanuts compared to the utter rip off prices the manufactures want you to pay, but no luck so far with these. I've 3 dead 17s I'd like to resurrect.

For the choices I have to make, gap filling always tops an upgrade, unless the existing model is very poor. It’s a dilemma for the established manufacturers. Do they really want to have an old model not up to current standards in their line ups? You and I may be keener on filling gaps but Bachmann seems to have no trouble selling its premium 47s and 37s.

I would be interested to know what the production runs of these new 47s and 37s are compared to say Lima's production runs for the same models from 35 odd years ago. I do remember when Hornby released the Merchant Navy in 2000/2001 they sold in excess of 30000 models in the first 12 months. I fear that manufacturers are chasing a narrower and narrower market with ever higher spec locos at inflation busting price increases. Ours is such a limited market I wonder how long this can carry on before it topples over.....

It could well be. The first 7 day strike is over, but any container ships from the far east, due to dock during that period, won't have waited, but gone on to Europe, so likely to have discharged containers for the UK at Rotterdam or Hamburg, where they will have to be booked on already busy feeder vessels.

The crazy world of international trade.......

BR loco green should look different to pre-war GWR loco green, though... You need to compare models of the same era for colour comparisons to make sense.

Yes indeed. I should have made my self clearer. The Accurascale one is IMO perfect rendition of BR dark loco green, and the Dapol GWR Brunswick green is not great.

True. These are the two most comparable angles I have seen. Accura top, Dapol bottom

As somebody who isn't a big fan of GWR locos and wouldn't know if something was slightly the wrong shape just by looking at it, what absolutely leaps out about these two pictures is how good the rendition of BR loco green Accurascale's model is. Dapol's Brunswick green is just wrong. Having painted several full sized locos in my time I find it actually sad that Hornby and to a less extent Dapol just seem incapable of getting GWR and BR greens right.

You've now got 18% of the entire prototypical build, not far to go for 100%!!

    Mike.

Im really supprised Oxford have modeled such a rare wagon. However they are sort of the perfect thing for a bit of verity in your rolling stock. 9 is a bit silly really but at the price I've paid, who could say no?

  7. I bought 3 direct from Oxford because they sent me a great bargain. I can't believe what you get for the price I paid! I was expecting the couplings to stick out too far, a common thing on many previous Oxford releases but these are not too bad. However I saw the 3 link coupling with instanter and quickly removed the couplings and used them instead (I have gentle curves) I liked the short rake so much I've bought another 6 from Rails! I'm not knowledgeable enough to say whether these wagons are accurate to the original or not, but I think they look great for a great price.

Just had a look at Rails website and although every one they have listed has a photo of the previous releases (it says so bottom right of each picture) it looks like D6132 will be available in Green SYP

    I hope so!

  9. When I lived in Cornwall in the 80s I knew a couple of drivers who had driven 22s and non of them had a bad word to say about them. One said they were better than the 25s they sent to replace them for getting trains going. He said they just dug their heals in and got on with it unlike the 25s which would slip if you weren't careful. I believe the 21s very bad reputation smeared these fine little locos.

  10. I was very supprised there are not going to be any class 29s in two tone green with small yellow panels as the one they did last time sold out really quickly and the full yellow ended one which was the last to sell out gets two versions this time.... Unless hattons have made a mistake. Great news about the tablet 21s though!

See here re Bogies halfway down and on the next page or two for the Finecast version.

Are the trailing bogie frames fixed on that? I've a feeling that with them fixed there's no way it would negotiate 2nd radius which is an unfortunate requirement. I might have a bash at making mine like the finecast one as I don't have any sharp curves.

Presumably you saw the post earlier in the thread (October 3rd, I think?) with some being loaded?

i'll scroll back now. only just found the thread. Thanks ;)

    EDIT..
I see now how they worked. Very interesting. It's going to be quite hard to model one loaded with bricks going by that picture!

Well, Hermes don't fare very well in surveys, not the worst but almost so.

The latest Which survey (Nov 21) put them just above Yodel, this was from 4002 replies

Other surveys have returned similar results, they are usually near the bottom and have been for some years.

The trick with Hermes is to make sure the parcel has lots and lots packaging inside to protect the product. This is not usually an issue because Hermes dimensions are very generous. Get it stuffed full of news paper etc in a large box. This bit of information seems to have been totally lost on Hornby who thought air would suffice......

  14.  This modern approach to the trailing pony arrangement being fixed and baldy wheels seems to be okay with some models but other that have a large rear overhang it seems to create too many issues. With this loco being unique having 4 wheels in the pony and a very large overhang I think Hornby could have tried a different approach. Thinking about the recent Heljan/Rails 18000 gas turbine, the bogies on that had a double movement by having a sub bogie free to move inside the visible bogie which had very limited movement. Ignoring the fact that that model struggled with anything less than 4th radius I think that if Hornby had mounted the 4 trailing pony wheels on a free floating sub bogie and then allowed the outside frames to have a limited movement too, that might have had a better outcome?

It looks like this has been a good marketing exercise for Henderson's Relish.    I'd finished the little bottle which came with the Henderson's Relish box van and part way through the one which came with the 6-wheel tanker.   I had never seen or heard of Henderson's Relish before but spotted it on sale this morning in my local Morrison's here in Scotland.

The best thing ever to put on meat and tatty pie ;)

Speaking of mirror images*, one curious thing I noticed about the model was that the windscreen wipers are on the middle and offside cab windows but not the nearside window, meaning that it was right-hand drive, which was unusual for a British locomotive. I checked Marsden & Fenn and the drawing indicates wipers on the left and right-hand windows but not the central one. The photographs, though, all show them on the centre and off side only, so the model is perfectly correct.

    *Sort of.

It was built right hand drive, as was 18100. That one was converted to left hand drive when it was converted to AC power.

  17. Couple of observations of this model.

1st even on 3rd radius you can hear the mechanism rubbing on the inside of the body, it also severely slows down. On 4th radius and higher it runs like a dream. Smooth, quiet and powerful.

2nd is the lighting. The single red light works as it should, however only the outer two lower white lights work. The roof light appears to work when the cab lights are on but I think its just the cab light filtering through the hole. The middle centre white light doesn't work at all.

3rdly the bogies are quite a work of art. There is very little movement in the frame, but there is a subframe inside holding the axles that can also turns independently to the outer frames.

I'm glad that my layout has no curves tighter than 4th radius. I've already ordered 18100 lol!

I rather like 1946 black. I also like wartime plain black, but I can understand why both are less popular than red or green & therefore less likely to appear in RTR form.

Hornby, Bachmann, Mainline and Airfix have done livery that version their LMS 4-6-0s that were in LMS straw lined black with the exception of the parallel boiled Patriot. Odd that really.

I've got two, a Bachmann one and the remains of an old Hornby version. Both are BR lined black. Just a coincidence that was the livery I got.

One was the old Hornby Lady Godiva and the Bachmann one was the Collectors Club edition.

    I reckon they suit black.

Unlike other older Hornby models, when the Patriot model went though the changes of moving production to China and fitting better scale wheels, and then conversion to loco drive the bodyshell has never been altered so you can fit the body of an early parallel patriot to the latest Railroad loco drive chassis. I don't think it will fit the super detail rebuilt Patriot chassis though. The B17 for example you couldn't do that.
