  1. If you look at the photo I attached previously, you will see a big arrow pointing at the closure rail which is at issue on all 3 points. Above it (unintended comparison as I hadn't read your post) is a dead frog point. On the live frog point, you can see that the frog isn't solid metal. From what I know, the frogs on Peco N gauge live frogs aren't solid metal either. I was looking for help and hopefully the picture will at least provide some clarification. Alun
  2. This isn't one of the points in questions, but is to the same design, which has varied over the years...
  3. To clarify and in case my terminology is lacking, it's the diverging piece of track between the snip (after the bond which is correctly wired) and the frog which of course includes part of the frog which isn't solid metal hence there must be a piece of wire connecting the 2 diverging rails/outer frog(?) and the v of the frog. I'm equally mystified. Alun
  4. Thanks Ray, probably my attempt at an explanation, but there is no connection between the blade and the closure rail as they've had "the snip" and are powered from the frog, if you follow. I presume there is an internal bit of wire which connects the closure rails to each other and to the frog. If it was just the one point, I would say hey ho, but 3 of 9 and 3 of 4 in the same area and the same closure rail but left and right hand points. Nothing new in terms of ballasting and wiring either.
  5. Hi all, Bit of an odd problem that I've never experienced before and cannot explain. I've spent a day investigating and rectifying and while I'm the first to admit to my limitations, I am not new to laying track and Electrofrogs. I laid a section of track with 9 x Peco Code 100 Electrofrog points a few months ago. The frogs are independently switched and I'm on DCC. We enjoyed a few weeks of testing (playing trains) and all worked perfectly, 0-4-0 locos happily crawling through the points. I took me quite a while to ballast and "decorate" the area as it will be difficult to access once completed - I wanted to get it right (farm scene, small station, far end of the railway yard). All was ready to rewire today and when firing things back up, the 0-4-0s stuck after the "snip" on 3 of the points (arranged as a pair of crossovers) when diverging. If I had only tested 0-6-0s and longer, I might not have noticed. I got the meter out and the relevant closing rails between the snip and the frog were dead on all 3. There had been no heat applied that I am aware of (there has now as I have had to retro-solder droppers to the offending closing rails) and wondered if anyone could offer some kind of explanation so that it doesn't happen again. Apologies for the terminology and many thanks in anticipation, Alun
  6. The Bullhead point that has been doing the rounds at the shows is a mock up. It doesn't show the check rails spanning 4 sleepers either. I did mean to ask about the arrangement of the blades too, but I was trying to keep up with my son, who is normal. Alun
  7. Hat's off to everyone at the York Show today. The best one I can remember!

  8. I was at the York Show today and asked at the Peco stand. I suspect I wasn't the first... For anyone interested: The check rails will span 4 sleepers (on the large radius point). The point will be uni-frog but it will look like a live frog and there will be a small shimmy (is that the correct spelling?) in the frog. They are aware of the discussions on various forums. There are no plans for a flat bottom rail equivalent. I hope that's of use. Alun

Where's the like button? I'm in the Premier Inn because of cost and location, so not far away. Anywhere cheap you recommend if I am allowed to say over on the Friday?

Went to the show yesterday, great atmosphere, nice to see the younger generation enjoying the layouts as well the older ones.

I couldn't agree more. A good show raising money for a great cause and a thoroughly enjoyable day!

  14. Thanks Huw, I was thinking about this, it's a first world problem... Either painting the legs, perhaps poster paint - or painting the area with PVA, placing the platform, doing my best with the gravel then lifting the platform again before the PVA has fully cured. Alun
  15. Thanks both. What is throwing me is that because of the arrangement of "wooden" beams and what have you, once the platform is in position, I can neither get a pencil in to accurately mark the many legs nor get a paint brush or my fingers to put down gravel. Alun
  16. Hi, I've put together a halt using Bachmann 44-0010 Wooden Platforms, Bachmann Platform Shelter and (I think) Ratio fencing. It probably isn't particularly prototypical (call it Newtondale or Herston), but it will give my son's roundy round a bit more purpose. The platform side (and wires) will be hidden. Having just about finished it (the platform lamps will be going in after it's fixed), I'm wondering how to fix it to the baseboard. Obviously, I don't want to put the "dirty gravel" down first and the best I can think of is painting the area with PVA or Copydex, placing the platform and trying to scatter the mix - but I risk getting mounds of it and bald patches. If anyone has any pearls of wisdom, I would appreciate it if you could share them. Many thanks, Alun
  17. Has just spent 100 quid on a book about Thomas the Tank Engine - and considers it a bargain!

@Skinnylinny, yes it is - I'm looking forward to reading it! @RJS1977 I've been searching for an affordable copy in any condition for a couple of years or so, but this one landed on my lap as it were. First edition, virtually as new, signed by the authors, but missing its dust jacket. If my long suffering thinks it's excessive, I can always sell it again - and I have bought her flowers.

Well done, it must have been some bunch of flowers

Ruth was a little shocked it has to be said. Then I showed her what they've been sold for on a well known online auction site and she was ok. And I made dinner...

  18. Hi Dave, good to hear from you. I did move to the Hornby/Roco couplings (either pairs of Hornby's or alternating Hornby and Roco) and Silver Sidelines off this parish went a step further adding a chamfer to clear the solebar and/or account for pocket heights. Heating the pipe connectors is a simple genius and I'll give it a go, although it's my son's train set which is getting the attention right now (he doesn't care about such things). Regards, Alun
  19. Interesting, bearing in mind the target market. How many parents buying a train set are going to have a back to back gauge or even a concept of needing to check? Hornby are not doing themselves any favours in this area and haven't been for a long time. Imagine spending a small fortune and trying to get that running round in circles on Christmas Day. Reminds me of a Hornby Princess Victoria 40 odd years ago... Is it me or do the frames in front of the saddle look entirely different on the Dapol version? Anyway, fascinating as ever, thank you.
  20. I did up to a point, I stopped before your post and have just read it - funnily enough we had a similar experience after switching energy suppliers. Both eBay and PayPal favour the buyer to the point of he or she only having to prove a parcel has been delivered to qualify for a refund. Thankfully, most people seem to be fairly reasonable, remarkable what picking up the phone can do if someone perceives a problem and the Royal Mail haven't "lost" a single parcel since I went to recorded deliveries. Bringing it back on topic, I was chatting to a customer today who used to drive Class 40s (along with Class 31s, Peaks and Class 47s) on the Trans-Pennine route.
  21. I was stupid enough to let the eBay sales turn into a business and now I don't have any time... Keep meaning to drop you a line and I will.
  22. Fascinating, I didn't know sound on DC could, errr, sound that good. We briefly had a sound fitted Sulzer Type 2 and I would contentedly listen to it ticking over while I got on with the day (DCC obviously) - I think it reminded me of trainspotting at Manchester Victoria in the 70s. Regarding the differences, I was quite happily rivet counting the roofs over the boiler compartments. Alun
  23. When I started my own business, I promised myself I was going to take sometime out to volunteer at a heritage railway. 6 months later, I have finally joined it!

Ha, ha. I'm a member of a couple of societies, but the one I meant to join (and now have) is the DVLR, 10 minutes drive away.

  24. Thanks Dave, I would be interested to see how you got on. I moved to Hornby/Roco and Roco couplings for those vehicles with a mechanism and NEM pocket. Regards, Alun
