  1. Chaps,

I've been tempted to acquire another 'Wellington' for renaming purposes as well - and I think my mind is made, given the absence of a GWR Castle in Hornby's 2015 annoucements...

Castle of this parish posted the following on December 13th last year. I'm sure he won't mind me copying this in below:

I was alerted to this by OTBL and I have sent this list to him via PM but incase it's of interest to others, here we go. As far as the Hawksworth tender in the GWR era goes, the engines I can find (date of fitting in brackets) are 4083 Abbotsbury Castle (1946), 4085 Berkley Castle (1946, notorious as the engine that ran down and killed Churchward!), 4092 Dunraven Castle, 5000 Launceston Castle (1946), 5016 Montgomery Castle (1946), 5022 Wigmore Castle (1946), 5023 Brecon Castle, (1946), 5038 Morlais Castle (1946), 5077 Fairey Battle (1947), 5085 Evesham Abbey (1947) and 5087 Tintern Abbey (1946). There might be others but I'm tired so there we are - best look under the circumstances! The first built with a HW tender was 7008 Swansea Castle but that was completed in 5/48, so its a bit late...

Given the batch that Wellington was from, I'm tempted by Montgomery Castle I think!

  2. Well spotted! Actually it's another of my attempts at a time stamp......for a 1947/8 layout I have nowhere near enough black GWR Locos.......It's an off the shelf B R liveried Collett.......an absolute bargain at 55 GBP 10 months ago..........to which I applied the very first British Railways lettering

I reliveried the weathered black BR Dukedog with wartime GWR letters though!

    Kind regards

Sorry to interject into your wonderful layout thread John, but I thought you may be interested in a couple of pictures of my wartime black Collett Goods with ROD tender. I think we probably capitalised upon the same deal ten months ago as that's around what I paid for mine - a 'silly cheap price' as I like to put it! I think this livery sits quite handsomely on the loco, it's different.

  3. All I can say is, superb! I'll probably opt for H1406 & H1407, though can anyone say for definite when the 48XX's were renumbered to 14XX's? Tempted by the wartime black 48XX but I don't think any would have survived in that livery until 1947, given the renumbering.

Also I like the idea of a GWR 'range' now emanating from Merseyside. Perhaps if both the autotanks and the Kings do well, we may very well see some Churchward and/or Collett coaching stock in due course? I would probably have kittens!

  4. Two beautifully finished kit built - I believe Comet - GWR Centenary corridor thirds for just £20 a piece. I personally consider this a bargain as the Comet kits alone are £47.50 - which you can round up to at least £60 after painting, lining and transfers etc!

I'm also pretty excited by these as it now means that I'm only missing the diner third and left handed brake third in order to form a full Cornish Riviera LTD set!

  5. I do like the N class; there's something very graceful yet compact about them. Are you planning on re-livering it Rob? I think malachite was the order of the day by 1947. Any plans to run a nice four-car set of Maunsells on an inter-regional working too?

I still regret not picking up a limited edition wartime black N class when Modelzone were throwing them out for £60 a throw in their dying days... they fetch a pretty penny on eBay now!

  6. An overcast day in the South Hams sees the much requested Collett Goods on the branch again. No cab sheet is fitted so woe betide the crew if theres a downpour. :O

Thanks Rob. There's just something about the Collett Goods - I think it's because they look like nothing else in the GWR loco stable, especially by the 1930's/1940's. I think I'm also right in saying it was probably the penultimate 0-6-0 design in Britain after the Q1?

It's a shame there's only 3205 left as it never gets up north and so subsequently I haven't copped it yet. Still I've got two of my own to ogle at in front of a 1:76 mixed freight!

  7. Probably the best buy I've ever made from eBay. A rake of three GWR Colletts, all of which have to be Comet kits, given the weight of them. All for the princely sum of £35 for the lot including postage! I've needed some bow-ended corridor thirds for an age, and with no soldering skills to speak of, I was always going to have to buy some kit-built complete examples!

They are beutifully painted, lined, and have interior detailing such as pictures on the compartment walls, but as you can see, they all need their bogies looking at, and one or two buffers and corridor connectors aren't fit for purpose. Still, will make for a nice winter detailing project!

  8. Fear not, dear Brent-ers, for I come carrying un-copyrighted pictures of castles (a castle!). These were taken by my good self at the NYMR's excellent western steam gala the weekend before last. The resolution is not as good as it could have been but alas, I am currently between digital cameras and my smartphone had to suffice.

Not often you see Swindonian top link express and the king of heavy freight side by side in North Yorkshire...

    post-18813-0-50740100-1412785567_thumb.jpg

And whilst she may be a long way away from home, 1501 looks right at home with the NYMR's newly overhauled Express Dairies milk tank wagon - allegedly the only authentic Express Dairies wagon left in preservation.

  9. Here we are. Wartime black Collett Goods with ROD tender. Smokebox numberplate still to be removed, but it gives you a good flavour of the thing. This was my first guinea pig for this treatment as many box shifters were practically giving these away last year in the early BR livery so I had to snap one up. I think it looks quite handsome in this livery and will sit in well amongst my heavy freight section of green 28/38xx's, ROD's, 56xx's and of course the 42xx & 72xx's! The manufacturers have released wartime liveried locos for the rest of the big 4 in the past but unfortunately they seem to neglect Swindon beasts. I guess if you want something doing you have to do it yourself!

  10. That would be something different but I can't see Hornby/Bachmann doing it.Removing the smokebox number neatly would be the most trickiest part of doing that project. You would need to add plating over the windows too.Have you a photo of yours to shew.

I will admit to being a little lazy/hesitant over the best method of removing the smokebox numberplate and have thus not done it yet! A file may well be needed but I've not attempted it before. I won't fit window blanking plates as I'm assuming they removed them in time for the long, hot summer of 1947. Pictures will appear perhaps after Downton Abbey or if not tomorrow evening sometime (all rear 3/4 shots to sidestep the matter of the smokebox!)

    Thanks for now,

  11. Rob, excellent shots as always, but the appearance of the venerable Collett Goods has piqued my interest; have you ever considered backdating a BR black western loco into wartime black? I've recently done just that with a Collett Goods with ROD tender and it is something different - not that I would ever call middle chrome green monotonous of course! I might apply this treatment to a Hall or a 2800 next - our perhaps one of the big two might surprise us with a curve ball livery choice next year?

  12. I am delighted to report that the Hornby Castle has ARRIVED! Sorry for the quality of the photos - my better camera wasn't to hand. post-18813-0-51393400-1409159436_thumb.jpgpost-18813-0-77531000-1409159489_thumb.jpgpost-18813-0-49489600-1409159505_thumb.jpgpost-18813-0-07507900-1409159539_thumb.jpgpost-18813-0-97497100-1409159556_thumb.jpgpost-18813-0-36643500-1409159571_thumb.jpg

Compared to two Glastonbury Abbey's that I purchased and had to return, this model has everything where it needs to be and looks the business. It looks like 'Refined' are really starting to know their stuff. Also, we still have sprung buffers, and not a moulded handrail in sight. The only thing I will be a little critical of is the quality of the printing on the nameplate, it is not 100% crisp, I feel.

Anyway, I'm delighted, especially after a two and a half year wait! Now where are my Hawksworths in ersatz GWR livery?

  13. How is your Comet C54 coming along Rob? That 'M set' should look smashing when it's done.

Also, are you intending to re-livery Tintagel Castle to 1947 condition? I am probably to embark on that endeavour very soon: I've almost given up on Wellington ever arriving. (Good job history didn't see a role reversal with Blucher, or we'd likely all still be under a French yoke!)

  14. Edit - I have taken down my comment as a precaution, after taking adb968008's point below. I apologise for my flippant disclosure of some mere conjecture that I had heard.

Mod - Feel free to edit subsequent posts in this thread that have quoted my original comment.

  15. There is something to be said for finding bargains over the last week or two - is it the holiday season, or perhaps too many unwise bets made over England's World Cup performance? As an example of this, I picked up a mint boxed Hornby LMS Stanier Corridor 3rd for £17 including postage last week. These are currently like hens teeth from the main retailers, and generally go for £30-£45 on eBay. It wasn't that badly listed either - even though this particular coach sometimes gets mistaken for the older tooling equivalent. Still, I'm chuffed!

  16. I see the arrival date for the GWR Castle Wellington has again been put back within the last day or so from 7th July to 7th August - at least according to Model Railways Direct. I'm more amused than annoyed by this eternal slippage now. Perhaps I'll raid my kitty and get another Star in the meantime...
