How are you finding your Dunster House shed? We're just buying a new house and I'm considering one (a little smaller than yours) for the train room...

Lovely pictures!

I went to Modelmania in Bristol on Saturday and saw an advert for a talk that might interest you:

Thanks Mark!
Great shot of 46512 - I keep meaning to get up to Loughborough to see 46521.
I've been wondering about a layout thread for a while - and yes, now that a lot of the work is done (and I can cheat and post everything I've done so far) it might be time for one...
Marcus.

Thanks both.
Yup the wheels are a bit shiny - need to do all of those I think (usual of not noticing until you take the photos).
I've seen a lot of the weathered (model) tanks with a sheen from the filler but I've struggled to find photos of the same in the real world so was a little cautious - using it for the axle boxes and springs sounds like a good idea though.

No I hadn't Chris! Thats a great tip. Thanks!

Hi Michael, thanks, I used an FMR Maxi applicator with a range of colours of fibres from them and from Model Display Products.

The hut was a complete scratch build - the roof is Wills plain tile sheet fabricated into the pitch, then i reinforced the vertices with filler and filed them down to accept Wills ridge tiles from the building detail pack. The window and door I took from the free hut that came with Railway Modeller a while ago (I think, or it may have been the original weighbridge hut).

Thanks Mark! How do you find the hold with hairspray layers? I'm trying to build everything to by Dyson-proof so I can manage the inevitable dust (my Mother always complained that my trainset when I was a child was too dusty and she stays in the train room when she's down...)

Different Buckden I'm afraid William - mine is the one in Cambridgeshire on the Ketterint - Huntingdon line. I do like your little layout though!

Thanks KH1! I'll definitely have a fiddle with that. My main problem is that I learnt on a very manual Minolta X-300 and translating what I know on that to the new one is tricky!

Thanks Mikkel! I was very please with it.
The only colour photo of the building I'm aware of is this one: http://www.eastanglianrailwayarchive.co.uk/Railways/Abandoned-Lines-and-Stations/i-vnKWfxfwhich is obviously well after it was no longer in operation, so I tried to go for a bit-less-tired-looking that that.

Oh, no tell a lie - Cranford No. 2 was a Bagnall and is currently at Cottesmore:

Hi Mark,
Thanks for that! I used the rubbing with a cocktail stick method to get the cabsides off. It left a little bit of a ghost but it was mostly covered with the new letters - I'll post a picture when I'm back home after new year.
Your model looks great - do you know what chimney 46403 had?
I want to say that I'm completely content with the numbers as the are but I fear you might be right! Good tip for how to get them centred and I'll check out the Fox shed code decals.
Cranford wasn't a J94 (neither I think was Cranford No. 2) - for one it had outside cylinders but I think it was a Hunslet - all the details are in "Ironstone Quarries of the Midlands Part 5 Kettering" by Eric Tonks (http://booklaw.co.uk/eshop/product_info.php?products_id=4716) again I can post the details when I get home - my copy is in Bristol (or later this week as I got my Mum a copy for Christmas). I think without scratchbuilding the Hornby (or the DJ Models) J94 is a close enough starting point for me and I do love your Cranford - I say is and Juniper Hill in Taunton earlier in the year.

Well if you've got a couple of grand handy you can have one too! I had to use it on it's lowest magnification so it would be very handy for 2mm so long as you have a steady hand!
Marcus.

Uh-oh, should I be expecting to wake up next to a horse's head?
Yup you mentioned you like it at Taunton, I like it too! Although it was enormously fiddly and I haven't been able to bring myself to finish the second (smaller) one, which is all I really need to do on the Station building before I paint it.

One thing to be careful with with the point rodding is the terminal piece at the point. I installed the last piece of the rodding so that it was close to the tie-bar but (I thought) not close enough to fowl the action. However even the slight touch from the rodding was enough to overcome the point motor and stop the frog being energised.

Thanks CK,
It's a very heavily kit bashed Ratio 536 Midland Signal Box kit, painted in phoenix precision P93 SR Middle Chrome green and P95 SR Buildings cream. Needs a little bit of weathering to tone it down a bit.
The real box was originally at Buckden, but now resides, extended vertically, at the Spa Valley Railway:

The Wills point rodding is good. It is incredibly fiddly, and I had to learn things I never imagined I'd need to know in order to get it close to right - but I suppose that is the nature of the hobby! I can imagine that for some larger layouts it could be very expensive.
-
I think that sounds like a good idea - my only issue is sourcing the ash!
-
These look great!
-
Thanks for the tip Mick! And compliments mean a lot coming from you!
-
Alex - fine ash sounds like a great idea - I'll give it a try! The building was there for most of my childhood but was demolished more than 10 years ago I think when they expanded the landfill next door. Sadly (and inexplicably!) I never went to have a look. There are enough photos in books and supplemented on the net (plus my memories!) for me to have a decent stab.
KH1 - I shall take a look for that book! Thanks.
Marcus.

So does that mean the 8F would have/could have passed through Buckden? I was working on the basis that they went the other way but a thundering ore train might be quite exciting!

Thanks Robin, they do look pretty reasonable and although I'm yet to figure how much room I'll need/be allowed ( ) I suspect the 5m x 4m will do the job for me. Do you have trickle heating or anything or does the insulation keep it fairly stable?
