Its complicated, but in essence it basically was down to Hattons developing their own product (class 66) in direct competition with Bachmann (who already had a reasonable class 66 in their range) and thus costing Bachmann sales. Bachmann therefore refused to supply Hattons.

Although Hattons is the only retailer to have suffered in this way despite other retailers like Kernow commissioning their own products, its important to note that none of the products Kernow chose to develop could be seen to be directly competing with a Bachmann product and as such Bachmann will have not felt threatened by such developments.

I think you will find that Kernows locomotives are either made by Bachmann or Heljan.

But that's because Rails don't do enough business with Australia to have to register for GST. Hattons did, and they had to charge GST to customers down under. So that doesn't particularly encourage anyone else to build a big business in shipping abroad,

I had used Hatton's since about 1984 and from 2000 onwards in Australia and have never been charged GST even on the couple of occasions that they said they were going to start.

Brexit, the changes import rules requiring VAT to be paid upfront, GST, the huge increase in overseas shipping charges are all recent events. As you say, why would a business take a regular loss? They put up with it short term but I don't think they could sustain it. Put it another way, if serving overseas customers can be done profitably and cheaply, why isn't anyone else appearing to be able to do it?

Rails shipped me a Bachmann 4-BEP which was on offer minus the VAT and no postage charge either.

A couple more Oxfords have met the hacksaw. I found a photo of a Crayford Consul Capri that I didn't know existed and liked the look of so I decided to model it, and a Mk1 Cortina got the same treatment while I was at it.

How do you make the folded down roof?

Got that one somewhere. A very different and nice cover.

This thread reminds me that they all used to be landscape format. Now, perhaps due to the magazine tie-in, they're portrait.

Some have been portrait over the years.

Out of interest, could I just ask if this means the "Remove item" option has reappeared?

It has not re-appeared on mine but I did email them the other day and was told If I wanted something removed from My Trunk, let them know what it is and they will do it for me.

Apart from a different roof moulding to accommodate the pantographs and changeover switch and a different livery, it is identical in all other respects to the R160 double ended diesel. If the fuel tank offends you that much it is very easy to unclip and could be replaced with whatever scratchbuilt underframe equipment you felt to be appropriate. On the R160 the fuel tank is dark blue, the same shade as the body, but on the R257 double ended electric loco it is black. That's one relatively easy way to tell if the tank on an R160 is original = blue, or black = replacement.

The R160/257 also makes a very good starting point for producing a more realistic-looking EMD F7/F9 than the mix'n'match R55 which has features of the F7/F9 as well as contemporary locos from Alco, their FA, and the Fairbanks Morse "C" Liners.

The double ended diesel is R.159, not R.160 and it was only the early versions that had blue fuel tanks. The later ones had black.

Years back I used to buy American car parts, getting them from the US was generally simple and unless the customs at this end were being awkward, you could basically assume that if you paid thirty dollars, by the time everything was settled it cost you thirty pounds. Not anymore. It was most irritating to have a £27 import charge slapped on an £11 pair of wiper blades. Strangely,  they never bothered with a £400 bumper that took two men to lift!

I often see British motorcycle parts on eBay USA, but the postage alone is a killer. Add to that paying VAT on 70 year old secondhand parts and import duties on items that were made in Britain in the first place!

As for China, nothing would surprise me.

I thought second hand items were VAT exempt?

The Triang 08 must be one of the worst models ever. The body does do a reasonable job of representing a generic 08/EE shunter, crude and way off the pace but it's still very obviously a gronk type. however the bit below the body is awful and is one of the few instances where it is a fair comment to use that old modeller favourite - 'it looks nothing like an 08'.

Does if it's standing next to a platform. :)

@alastairq indeed, first time I have seen one "in the flesh", but not my cup of tea. This was my favourite of the day though (even if it only has three wheels) :^)

A Merlin at full power, made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end...

I think you'll find that has a Griffon engine in it.

Purchased merely on a whim was a pre-owned Hornby R671 "Country Local" electric trainset with a crimson 3F plus two crimson shorty clerestory coaches and an oval of radius 1 steel track plus siding.  Cost was GBP30.00 (after VAT removal) and GBP25.00 for shipping.  The set was amazing,  being like a time capsule from 1986,  based on literature in the pack.  All the contents were as new unused condition.  The loco ran straight out of the box and is as smooth and as quiet as any modern day model.  It is fitted with either an X03 or X04 motor.  Normally I would shy away from these motors but I am really impressed with the loco received today.

If the set has the right loco, it will have the cheap throw away motor in it that came after the X04 and X03 and will have a sprung rear axle, with traction tyres on the centre axle and split connecting rods.
