  1. When I worked in a private hotel in FL. it was drilled into us on staff that: 'The Customer is king!'. no matter how incnvenient that might be for those of us on staff. The reason being that the customer paid our weekly running expenses and our wages... QED..
  2. Having no reserve stock does seem to me to be cutting things very fine as far as passengers' trainsportation is concerned. Bu possibly I'll be informed that it's all down to 'Costing.', 'Returns on equipment.' and other bean-counters' justifications - at times the Operating Depts. must be nigh on at their wits 'end for extra stock.
  3. As a modeler who's been away from railways for far too long would someone kindly explain why, to improve the TE. on model locos., it is not possible to fit traction tyres to the loco's.coupled wheels and the electrical pick-ups to either the loco's. bogie-wheels or to the tender's wheels?
  4. As I'm one of those ex-pats who've been away from GB. for the last.25+years please enlighten/explain why such a logistics operation would be impossible today? I might have thought that improved signalling & communications between signalman. & driver; track layout & alignment and suchlike might have eased matters?
  5. Query - Are my myopic eyes deceiving me, but looking at the 'toes.' of the points, (turn-out.), ahead of the Hotchley Hill to Woodford gypsum-train they appear to be set incorrectly?
  6. New Year's resolution? But notice that you've omitted the year! Anyway - bestest Good Wishes to you.
  7. Surely an aware author will pitch the level of his/her writing to the average readership of the book/magazine/'paper.? Although, without seeming to be either condescending or insulting, it's probably better to remember that well-known acronym: 'KISS.', (Keep it simple, stupid.),. Over the years I have written instructions for the 'Black Knight.' research vehicle; the 'Yellow River.' RADAR., aboard ship, (for land-lubbers.), and so on and so forth. It has ever been a question of just how far DOWN the average reader's intelligence level should one write and I've found that 'KISS.' is as good & a simple guide as any. If the average reader were able to say: 'Of course I knew that.' then possibly the correct level had been struck?
  8. Mr. Bedford - do I spot two 'Split infinitives' in the above sentence?
  9. From one Englisshe language pedant to another - 'E' is a 'soft' vowel whereas 'O' is an 'hard' vowel, thus the difference 'twixt. 'Schedule.' and 'School.'.
  10. II am no Locomotive Engr. - so with that disclaimer safely out of the way - the seemingly long boiler of the P2/1. set me wondering as to just how near to steam-production the water at the front end of the single-pass boiler would be?
  11. Agreed - the a/m. book is not cheap. Other suggestions are - >. - Our friends at Didcot - surely a repository of many matters GWR? >. - The GWR. Society and/or the publishers of the GWR. Magazine; >. - I have lived o'seas. for the last dozen or so years thus the following info. might be out-of-date: Running parallel to each other and between Charing X. rd. & St. Martin's Lane are Cecil Court & Gee's Ct., (?),. In one of them there used to be a bookshop devoted to most matters pertaining to tpt. topics, (apologies, but I forget the name.). Possibly it might be helpful - if not for drgs. then for books?
  12. Surely our friends at Didcot should be a repository for matter pertaining to the GWR.?
  13. May I refer you to the following book, (described as 'The first serious volume to focus on this class in the last fifty years.')*, - The Great Western 'Halls.' and modified 'Halls.'; Laurence Waters; Pen and Sword; 978 178383145 6.; GBP.45.74.; 160pp., with over 200 b&w. or colour photos. shewing each member of the class. (Each member of the class is excellently illustrated.)* * Publisher's blurb., Despite the price I hae me doots as to whether drawings are included? Possibly worth enquiring before intended purchase. Usual disclaimer. .
  14. Two further books about Ship-modeling that you might find to be of interest and/or helpful, courtesy of Pen & Sword - The life & ship models of Norman Ough; Waterline Warships; Alastair Roach; Philip Reed; Seaforth Publications; Seaforth Pubs.; 9 781473 87947 8.; 9 781848 32076 5.; GBP.25.oo., 192pp.. GBP.25.oo., 128 pp.. Apologies for going off topic But I salve my conscience by writing that many ships' modelers do a lot of the research & work themselves and thus might be classed alongside the likes of many another modeler of railways, as is shewn in these threads.
  15. Or, as one wag in the FAA. used to say: 'May they never know that they might have met.'. ;-)
  16. I did not find any info. on Mr. Gedge per se; although search-engine Google! had some info. on the 'Gedge slot.'. St Enodoc's post, #11,484., is far more enlightening, thanks to its photos., (1 picture is worth 1,000. words!), - for which many thanks.
  17. To refresh my amnesic memory I availed of search-engine Google! to review the type 121, 'Leander.' class of frigates; qty. 26 built; two of which, F56. 'Argonaut.' & F127. 'Penelope.' served during the Falklands' re-occupation. Reportedly one of the Service's more successful class of ships.
  18. Thank you for your prompt reply - appreciated. 'Give instruction to a wise man ... .', (Pro IX:9.),. Now to see if search-engine Google! has any info. on this Mr. Gedge?
  19. From several years ago I had a need to compare Stephenson's & Walschaerts' valve-gears for steam locos.. So where did I go? Why - to search-engine Google! of course, where there were several diagrams; and for Walschaerts at least one in glorious technicolor shewing the valve-gear operating in s-l-o-w motion. 'Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.'. (Mat VII:7.),.
  20. Headstock, Should you be desirous of modelling some of HM. ships then maybe you'd like to look-at the following web-site - >> roger-antrobus.magix.net << Happy modelling!
  21. In 1/72nd. scale the LOA. would be approx. 5ft. 02ins. wouldn't it? I wish you well in that project.
  22. In connection with the Screw-link couplings what is a 'GEDGE.'? Neither my Hamlyn's Encyclopedia nor search-engine Google! give applicable meanings!
  23. Reminds me of a cartoon that I saw in a post-Brexit issue of the weekly magazine The Spectator - Three men sitting on the pavement, with their caps before them; each had a placard hanging from a string around his neck. The placards read: 'Ex-bookie.'; 'Ex-pollster.' & 'Ex-pert.'.
