  1. A short running session featuring the Dapol B4 0-4-0T edited with real sound.
Sounds are provided by a number of similar locomotives from my sound collection, captured at various Gala and Preserved Railways over the past few years.
Here we see 'Sussex' in dazzling industrial yellow livery - weathered by Rails of Sheffield - working rakes of 16 Ton mineral wagons around Somerdale Colliery.
    Hope you enjoy!

  3. A short running session featuring my recently modified Hornby 'Generic' 4 & 6 wheel coaches repainted into S&DJR Prussian blue livery.
In this video we see the rake in action, hauled behind Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (SDJR) Midland Railway 1532 Class 0-4-4T, No. 54 on my photo-plank micro layout, edited with real sound.

  4. April 2021 would had seen the Bentley Model Railway Group host their annual TRAINWEST Model Railway Exhibition, Corsham, Wiltshire.
However, like many Model Railway Exhibition over the past year, the event had to sadly be postponed.
So to mark the occasion, I've picked some of my favourite layouts from previous years to create this TRAINWEST Model Railway Exhibition highlights video, showcasing a wide selection of amazing model railways, in a variety of scales and gauges.
All being well, the show hopes to return bigger and better than ever next year!
    Hope you enjoy!

Some while ago a gentleman displayed his Hornby generics repainted in S&DJR blue. A very good job he made of them too.  He was picked up for the fact that the S&DJR didn't have that particular type of coach. Now, not knowing anything about S&DJR coaches, I would not have noticed that. What leapt out at me was the lack of that signature varnished wood border to the windows, the bolection.

    Morning Edwardian.

Thanks for the feed back on the S&DJR coaches. Will look out for a suitable paint and get around to adding the vanished wood boards :)

Very nice video and sound, thank you for it. The notorious cab light isn’t very evident. Have you done something to block the light from the headcode box or is it just not visible under the layout lighting?

Glad you enjoyed the edit! Certainly can't beat the sound of the real thing. Done nothing to the lighting, so must be the layout lighting.

The big snag here is that the S&DJR had no lavatory 6-wheelers - the only lavatory carriages were some of the bogie carriages. The choice of a centre-lavatory rather than a centre-luggage composite remains to my mind the greatest blunder in both ranges. You can do something about those buffers but not about that.

I know, but as they are 'Generic' I'm not to fussed. Beats the S&DJR Blue Dapol Stanier stock I was previously running

  10. Narrow Gauge Model Railway Exhibition
Over the years I've seen some amazing narrow gauge layouts on the exhibition circuit - these have inspired me to also get involved, building a number of my own 009 and G scale layouts. However, over the course of 2020 & 2021 shows like these and many other events had to sadly be cancelled.
So, I've looked back through my archive and picked some of my favourite narrow gauge layouts I've seen from shows around the country, to create this special Narrow Gauge Model Railway Exhibition video, showcasing a wide selection of amazing narrow gauge model railways, in a variety of scales and gauges.
    Shows featured in this video include;
Mendip Model Railway Group - Finescale Exhibition 2017
Bristol Model Railway Exhibition 2016 -2019
    Lydney Model Railway Show 2019
West Camel Model Railway Exhibition 2016 - 2019
Due to the sheer volume of shows and layouts, I hope to bring future instalments feature more amazing model railways in the not to distant future.
    Hope you enjoy!

    Places pedant hat on head.

Both the vans - the model one and the square-panelled one in Phil's photo, are fruit and milk vans. Parcels traffic would be carried in the guard's brake. The S&DJR had no parcels vans as such. In the days of the 6-wheelers, a common formation was brake / third / first / third / brake, providing ample accommodation for parcels traffic. The bogie third brakes also had ample parcels space.

Replaces pedant hat on peg. (I keep it handy by the computer...)

Once again, thanks for the info. Though was referring to the engineering above (just going of the description listed)

I haven't many photos of S&D stock in later years. The official photos I have are mainly of carriages with nice new fully-lined paint jobs, which I would think are early. This one shows how a weathered lined coach looks. The lining is almost invisible. I would be interested to find out if unlined stock was introduced, perhaps during WW1.

Thanks for that. One of the images I was looking at for reference. Tommy eye it looks like it's making lining all together.

What date are you aiming for? That will have implications for the solebar/headstock and end painting.

Well, no particular date, just something that will sit nicely behind my 1P, 3F, 4F ect, though I understand most if not all of the 4 and 6 wheel stock was gone by then. Its just a short rake of Hornby Generic coaches, so not going for accuracy, just something that looks right

Highbridge practice for passenger stock mirrors Midland Railway practice. I'd be pretty confident that passenger carriages remained fully lined-out Midland style right up to 1930 (and beyond). After all, the LMS did not give up full lining-out until 1934. What is not clear is whether the lining-out of the solebars was discontinued at the same time as on the Midland, 1902 (leaving them plain red, then black from 1912). The only "simplification" to the lining of coach sides was the move from gold leaf to chrome yellow from about 1912. There is some evidence for plain blue ends in later years, whereas formerly the beading was painted black but not lined out (same as the Midland, again)

Thanks for the info, so am I right in thinking that yellow with black beading would be best?

  15. A short night themed running session on Fry's Somerdale featuring the Hardy's Hobbies Fry's Sentinel.
This is the first time I've managed to get around to operating the layout in the dark, with just the street lamp providing a atmospheric glow to the scene.
Admittedly my camera was struggling with the low lighting for this one, so will be looking at ways to improve it for the next.
    Hope you enjoy!
