  1. There is a bog-standard SEFinecast A4 kit going for £149.95 BIN, where SEF sell them for £99.50.

Do people never check what an item costs in life before buying/bidding?

With so many R-T-R A4's available, a SEF A4 recently sold on Ebay for less than £50.

A regular high pricer from the Lake District has relisted a beaten-up BEC D11 body and tender (no chassis)for £140. This was previously listed for over 2 years at £135.

Do you think he'll sell it this time, with Bachmann's lovely D11 models available?

  2. The above mentioned vendor attracts a lot of interest, but doesn't sell many kit built locos, as they are advertised for months and months. Another of the crazy price brigade has had the same rubbish (sorry loco) advertised for over TWO YEARS.

I am not a businessman, but I would think selling ten items for a £10 profit each is better than one item with a £80 profit.

  3. I agree with your sentiment Horsetan, but how much would give for a Kays HP2M motor.

There are two motors that avoid like the plague; Kays HP2M and Tenshodo Spud motor bogies. Neither has any slow running or power and the Spuds heat up rapidly under any load.

I prefer Mashima can motors and High Level gearboxes. You can choose the gear ratio to suit the loco requirements.

  4. It is amazing the attitude of some vendors.

I queried the motor on one kit and got the answer very quickly. So far so good.

I then replied that I did not like the motor and would not be buying.

To my suprise the vendor replied stating that it was a good motor and dropping the price £20. I do not know how the vendor thinks he knows the requirements of my loco stud.

I replied that I still was not interested and would be buying a kit and fitting the motor of my choice. I thought that was the end of it.

However, the vendor replied angily threatening me will all sorts of action.

No doubt the vendor is writing a book; "How to attract and keep customers".

  5. Il Grifone said

Mine too! though there was a girl's grammar school next door (Their most famous pupil was Mandy Rice-Davies).

We had the girls Grammar School at the bottom of the hill, and the girls were banned from going within three feet of the boundary fence as they might talk to our boys as they walked past on their way to the playing fields.

The only famous girl, to my knowledge, was Joanna Trollope.

  6. Happy New year

People don't seem to do research on items that they buy.

There was a model of a streamlined Cock o' the North sold for a BIN price of over £500, but it had the wrong size wheels and wrong tender, in the wrong box.

I personally keep a database of prices realised for locos that I like.

Over christmas a McGowan D9 kit went for £143 plus postage. I bought a D9 coupled with a N4/5 for £70 a few months ago. perhaps I should sell the D9 rather than build it, and wait for another one to turn up.

  7. It's a shame if the Nucast masters die the death. There were many locos in the range that will probably never surface in RTR form,

I have a vast pile of kits to build.

The BEC J52 mentioned above makes a useful shunter if fitted to a Mainly Trains chassis with a decent motor and gearbox.

I still have a couple of Kays O4's picked up cheaply which will be built into O4 variants.

I enjoy building/converting kits and get a great deal of satisfaction from building a kit and adding extra detail.

The same goes for the old Kirk coach kits, with a little work on the detailing and careful painting they can be made into something to be proud of.

If you look at the WEST END WORKBENCH thread, you can see some l;ovely examples of what you can do with a old kit.

Compliments of the season to all

  8. If you download a gearbox planner from the High Level Kits website, you can decide which gearbox suits you.

I would try and get a Mashima 1024 in the loco, which is quite powerful for its size.

A Road Runner Plus at 54:1 or Humpshunter at 60:1 would be suitable.

The Humpshunter gear needs to be fixed to the axle with Loctite, which make it a little less convenient that the Road Runner Plus which is fixed by a grubscrew.

The Loadhauler Compact would probably be too wide for the chassis, as would the Low Loader.

I would solder the screw-in spacers to to the sideframes to make a more rigid chassis.

    Good building

  9. Number 559 was a Y8, even smaller than a Y7. The Y7 has 3'6 wheels where the Y8 has 3' wheels. I used Markits 12.5mm wheels on my Kay's

Y8, coupled to a Mashima 1015 and Highlevel Humpshunter 108:1 gearbox. It now has fantastic slow running (less than 1mph scale speed).

  10. I see the rough old BEC D11 kit of Zeebrugge has been relisted again by Mr High Price.

Its been relisted on and off for over two years, perhaps he'll get the hint.

The original kit (the one I built in 1970/1) came with a short brass chassis for the loco, so it's not even complete.

If he put it into the auction and got more than £20 for it, I'd be surprised.

I wonder how many more stagnant items he has that are not moving his money?
