  1. Conversely, if my wife and I go out to at a nice restaurant, we both dress up a bit so as not to let down those who have taken the trouble to 'look nice' as she puts it.😐

Only for some - a relative few I suspect.

One wonders just what fraction of the populace could afford to kit themselves like that, and how much it would differ from today in terms of the number of men who might afford the clothing in fashion magazines.

The professional class, lawyers, doctors, etc. and above in the social order could probably dress accordingly on occasion but most likely they would normally shop as we do.  Most of us were brought up on school uniforms which provided the basics, even to the blazers and ties.  This translated easily to the work dress effort which were worn till they became shiny with wear.  It wasn't until I came to the US that I ditched smart clothes for more informal wear.  However in this country there is a paucity of ready to wear clothes in my size of 29" pants and medium shirts, usually Polos as I dislike T-shirts, especially those with something written on them!  But I still buy clothes from M & S as they sell the  sizes that fit without alteration which often happens with local purchases even from the likes of Macys, etc.

I can get anything from M & S in five days via DSL, which is invariably quicker than ordering from the local Mall!

I will try to avoid using the air-con as it knocks the fuel consumption for six but over the coming days it will probably be essential.

Now why worry about petrol consumption when its umpteen degrees outside?  Surely one comfort is more important!  The A/C is on all the time on our casr, adjusted to the optimum desired temperature.

    Good evening everyone

Well apart from this morning’s shopping trip, I’ve done absolutely bu99er all. It’s been far too hot to do anything outside, it got up to 28C this afternoon, so I’ve stayed in instead, spending most of the day in the cellar, where it’s been nice and cool. I’ve mostly been sat at the computer tweaking the diagrams I’ve drawn up for the delay circuit for my signals.

Whilst I was shopping this morning, the postie very kindly dropped the latest edition of BRM on the door mat, so that received a lot of attention this afternoon.

The postie hasn't dropped anything for me from the UK for ages.  What's going on over there?

I had I had a rather bizarre experience: I was bending over, head lower than my heart, filling the dishwasher; I then rapidly straightened up and in a second or two my head started spinning, I went all “woozy“ and started to lose control of my muscles.

Must be the day of bizarre experiences, I had a similar bizarre experience also!  It was a warm day with the A/C on and in the evening watching TV sitting on the couch, I started to shake uncontrollably.  I lay down on the same couch and my wife (bless her) found a heat pad and a blanket.  After  cup of tea and the rest of Father Brown, it all calmed down fortunately.  All seems OK today but I have no idea why such a thing happened.

This is old-fashioned, but also rather fascinating. One of several fashion shots taken by American photo journalist Lee Miller, when she’d settled down in Sussex after witnessing the horrors of WW2. They are circulating on ‘disused railways of Sussex Facebook page’. The station is Horam (or Waldron, or Horam & Waldron, or Waldron & Horam, or Waldron Road, or ….. it’s name was changed as regularly as a pair of socks).

    Worth reading-up about Miller.

Some of my girl friends looked like that, hat, handbags and all!   Life was different then - no jeans in sight!

  8. All is quiet in sunny GH this morning after yesterdays noisy fourth.  The neighbours roof is finished so no more hammering so silence reigns once more.  They copied our upscale roof going from a '90s brownish colour to a colour that looks like slate and as its a bigger roof than ours they must have paid more.  The cost for ours was around K7,  good job it doesn't happen very often but we had a paint job at the same time for about the same price but it all looks good now!

Now to let the bank balance rest!😐

The sun has set here on the 4th (about 20 minutes ago) and the bombardment is beginning. Twilight is still too bright for aerial  displays but the 'thump, thump' is getting regular.

The professional displays all begin at 10:00pm when it is properly dark.

Contrary to local conventional wisdom, it did not rain on any picnics today, but was quite lovely topping out around 25°C. The weather was just about perfect.

The usual joke is that the rain stops on July 5th and a 50% chance of rain is forecast.

Still going on here in GH - one of the noisiest for ages.  Its ironic as the local council has put a ban on fireworks due to locals complaining of being too loud!

Always interesting though often pointless - though suggestive of an infinite set of parallel universes.

Learnt a new word today - contrafactual!  Never heard it before or even read it!  Its not made up , is it?🙂

I've always pondered alternate endings or different outcomes  I was a bit of an Amerophile when young and interested in all things American, big cars, John Wayne and  particularly from the 'troubles' with the British.  Slavery, WWs 1 and 2 and so on, until recently since when the US made some odd decisions, to put it nicely.  Best not get too involved there!

  11. The sheep don't think its funny but they'll get used to the idea!🙂

On another note, its July 4th tomorrow and GH along with other towns now has a firework ban in place to counteract the hot and dry weather.  Remains to be seen if such an affront to 'patriotism' will actually work.  At least sheep and other animals including people would appreciate the peace.

We are in Devon. Journey was ok. We stopped for a couple of drunk and snack breaks. We would have been too early to check in so had a small diversion to Knighthayes Court where we consumed some National Trust cake and tea and then wandered round their kitchen garden. We will return for a proper visit later in the week.  The cottage is pleasant, very old but modern inside, even had WiFi. The “authorised access only” track/road was interesting, single track with no passing places and vegetation hitting the car on both sides.  Aditi did ask if I were sure we were on the correct route. I knew we were but said even if it was wrong there was nowhere to turn yet.

Devon lanes are notorious, especially those stone ones that are camouflaged by bushes and grass.  They can do damage for the unwary even in small cars and I often wonder how we would get on in a car like ours, typical American size.  They did considerable damage to a small car we owned back home! 😟  As for backing up, you'd better be good at it!

Don't get me STARTED on the price of gas/petrol - with AMericans rushing to buy huge SUVs and pickup truck when gas was stupidly cheap, the same folks are now bleating about how much it costs to fuel their toys...

A nickel a schtickel once went the rhyme - now that same schtickel will cost you a dime!😉

  15. For some reason, all of a sudden I am unable to sign in to this forum!  I go through the required process of changing my PW, then it tells me to sign in but when I do I get the dreaded Error message.  This has occurred over the last couple of weeks.  Why this happens is a mystery as this is my latest topic via View New Content

As an occasional singer of folk songs I find that nearly all of my repertoire dates from before 1964.  For me it's not a problem!

    Chris

My organ repertoire is of the same period, 30's, swing, vocal pops, etc until about 1955 when it stops along with the emergence of rock 'n roll and whatever.  Can do Beatles, shows and other contemporary music but nothing rappish - not my style!😠

Not to paraphrase the soundtrack to an 80s 'cop' movie, but "the heat is on".

It's already warmer at noon (28°C) than the high temperature yesterday. Out walking in the mid-morning, yesterday was 14°C, and today was already 25°C, which was also the temperature inside the house, so the air conditioning was deployed for the first time this year. Happily it is functioning after perhaps nine months of disuse.

It's actually a lovely day to be outside in the shade. There is a breeze with cloudless blue skies. Tomorrow is forecast to be hotter, flirting with triple digits in the old money (37°C).

Turned on the A/C for the first time this year.  Not bad considering the years half over!🙂

Hopefully the only person she gets familiar with is me.  Talking about that she has been most attentive and helpful with doing up buttons and things for me however this morning she did draw the line at "assisting" me in the shower!  😂

Being in a similar situation, we go all the way!  While I can get to most areas of the bod, including the 'mucky parts', I can't get down to my legs or feet so my wife of nigh on fifty years does the necessary.  After all that time, nothing is new and seen one seen 'em all!😉
