  1. The Warsaw area was the first to be electrified by the PKP at 3,000 DC. They acquired EMU's for the suburban service as well as six locomotives to haul long distance trains. The UK played a big part in supplying equipment / complete locomotives for this project. Later they built four more locomotives using EMU equipment.

  2. When I was researching for the drawing of the Fell I looked at a lot of photos and tried to discern one side from the other. Oddly I did, it was to do with the roof, otherwise I could not tell one side from the other. I try very hard to make the drawing look accurate I would not even want to attempt to make a model of one. I can not see where I have made mistakes and will go back to correct them when I have the time. Incidentally here is a drawing of it in black, the only other one that I have currently finished.

I saw the Fell at Glasgow, looks like a Fell to me and I have one on order.  Had a long and enjoyable chat to Michael.

I’ve got a blue GT3 which looks stunning. Wonder what a blue Fell would look like? Don’t think it would suit large logo livery with those big bonnets. Plenty of Cumbrian Fells to name it after, maybe Cross Fell.

I posted a drawing of a Fell in blue two pages back, if you want to get an idea of what it would look like.

  4. I know I am late with my response but I lived in Wirksworth from February 1976 to July 1981. I can remember walking from Steeple Grange to school everyday and passing the quarry where I would stop to look at the diesel. Then one morning I was surprised to see a steam engine and later saw it go pass my school (Wirksworth Primary) on the back of a flat bed (it was heading south on the road that led to Duffield.) I am pretty sure the one I saw was Howell No 3.

Does anyone know when it left Wirksworth, it would have been between 1976 and 1978, and where did this engine go?

The TP units that I rode on while visting my big sister who lived in Selby at the time were definitely given NE prefix vehicle numbers, and IIRC from the Ian Allan Combined  Volumes the 110s were as well.  This was in 1966 and 1967, and at that time Selby and many other stations had the orange NE region signage.

Again IIRC, and I may well not RC, the GE prefix was limited to emus.  The Tyneside emus had NE prefixes.

One of the things I checked before starting this topic, which seems to have grown while I was asleep, was the Tyneside EMU's and all the photos I saw showed them having both an E prefix and suffix. I would have thought that if anything would have had an NE prefix it would have been them since they were confined to a specific operational area.

But now I have a follow up question. Was there any pre-nationalization coaches that had a NE prefix and a lettered suffix such as the photo that 'Steamport Southport' posted of GE13827E?

I have also seen a photo in a book on Mk1's of a GE prefixed Mk1, I can't think of the name of the book right now!

From memory I think the Trix Trans-Pennine units are numbered with the NE prefix, presumably the prototype was too.

Yes and that fooled me as I remembered seeing a photo of a Trans-Pennine unit with a NE prefix but I was remembering a photo of a Trix model!

At least a couple of threads mentioning NE prefixes on here, one with a photo of a Mk1, top post of page 2:

    Thanks for the links!

I had found some mention in other threads of DMU's but could not find any photos. As for the Mk1 that is certainly interesting and I have passed that on to my father (he was the LMR coach inspector so there is not much he missed when it came to coaches!)

  7. Hopefully someone can answer this, and provide proof if the answer is yes.

Did any coach, EMU or DMU carry the NE prefix? My father, who worked for BR in the 1960's and 1970's says he never saw anything with the NE prefix but I have seen comments that a few vehicles did. I have searched the web and found nothing, but of course that doesn't mean there was not.

A female friend told me that kidney stones were as painful as childbirth ... however, I'm not sure she was entirely qualified to comment as she had never had children herself. :D

I had a kidney stone years ago, worse pain I ever had. Talking to a female colleague after the fact she said that her kidney stone was worse than childbirth, and she had several children!

I thought the reason it needed to be turned was the observation car (s) needed to be at the back? Or do they plan to run one at the front and one at the back?

Dropping many of the renaissance cars seems like a step back in service quality - I know they're small for the loading gauge available here (and had corrosion issues), but they're strong, well insulated, quiet and, as you note, accessible.

The chronic under investment in rail infrastructure and service, especially passenger, east of Mont Saint-Hilaire is depressing.

Had the misfortune of riding in a Ren car from Truro to Montreal back in 2004. At first I was excited as I had seen these cars being built in Washwood Heath in 1996 but by the time the train reached Moncton I was happy to be able to get off and walk the platform. By the time the train reached Montreal it was all I could do to stand up after spending all night in a cramped seat.

Have to say they made the LRC cars look spacious!

The yellow paint was introduced in 1988. But there are enough photos at Flickr, where you can still find some SP45 and ST43 without yellow paint in 1989.

The reason for the yellow livery was allegedly accidents with Russian tanks, so the livery was introduced to improve visibility.

The story I heard was that a PKP official visited the UK and thought the yellow panels were a good idea so it was introduced in Poland.

The UK has always been good at administration, if you want to see real ambiguity, look at Poland today.. I once saw three locomotives numbered “Ol49-69” on the same day, two of them were at Leszno at the same time, one in steam !

Interesting as I only knew of Ol49-99 being renumbered Ol49-69 and that was in 2001.

According to BRdatabase, 192 locos have a build date between Jan -June 1948.

    3218 has a build date of Jan 2nd, shared with B1 61274.

I don't know how many B1’s NB could assemble at any one time, but they had 10 out of the door by February..

But then NB wasnt a BR works either, so does it even count ?

3218 was one of the ones he listed as a possible contender, but he never mentioned a B1 but as it was not built by BR then I would think it does not count.

I guess you mean that construction started after 1 Jan 1948. Anything that construction started before Jan 1948 can't claim to have been built by BR.

Unless you mean the first engine to be released to traffic after 1 Jan.

Good question and one that I asked my father about. Yes released after Jan 1, 1948 which would mean that the frames were laid in 1947 but the locomotive was finished under BR, which apparently would make the locomotive in question built by BR.

  14. I am sorry if this has been asked before but I could not find anything online.

I was wondering if anyone knew the identity of the first steam engine built by BR, obviously it would have a build date of Jan 1948. I asked my father who, while he did not know the answer, supplied a list of possible candidates. These were.

    GWR design

    Hall or 2251 class

    LNER design

    A2 or L1

    LMS design

    2-6-0, 2-6-2T or 2-6-4 T

He got this information from several book in his collection and all had build dates of early 1948. Can anyone shed any further light on this?

    Thanks.

  15. There are actually two protests on the CN main line near Tyendinaga, both between Belleville and Napanee (where I now live!) The first one is near Shannonville, this was the first blockade and is the one occupied by Tyendinaga. The other is just to the east in Marysville under the Hwy 49 overpass. This one was set up by the Akwesane that live near Cornwall, Ontario.

There are lots of trains parked in the area waiting for the blockades to end but right now that does not look like it is going to happen any time soon.
