  1. Oxford just sent me an email with their 2nd 2018 release. It has a different set of models than listed here. I'm a little confused.

    Anyhow ...

The new tooling Burrell showman's traction engine caught my eye.

  2. Wonderful news indeed. My favorite locomotive model from last year without a doubt and there were some outstanding models released last year.

One question: I was under the impression that ROD locomotives were black or dark grey but these are green. Is there evidence for the green? Were they returned to the UK in that color?

    Thanks for any replies.

  3. How does the colour / shade of the Hornby SECR wagon compare with the Bachmann limited edition wagon from a few years ago please?

The Hornby wagon gray is a little lighter than 9816. In tone, it's a good match. The big difference is that the Hornby is brown planking inside (i.e. wood color), not gray.

They look really good together. Especially pulled by Hatton's P.

  4. Today i received the 3 plank SECR wagon, well worth every penny, wonderfull model, the double spoked wheels are even finer than Bachmann ones.

Undercarriage very fine detailed and as Jenny Kirk says in here review in this topic the 3 plank is definitely worth 9,5 out of 10.

Eagerly awaiting for the 4 plank and 6 plank ones, I will leave the 5 and 7 plank aside because the wrong wheelbase of the undercarriage.

If Hornby is gonig to make more of this older type of wagons in this detailed form, Bachmann will get it very difficult to sell theirs for the high prices they are asking.

I thoroughly agree. Just received my SECR 3 planker and it really is a beauty. Already sold out at Hattons so we're not the only ones that thinks that.

  5. Am I the only one a tad reluctant to put down a deposit?

I don't remember having to do that before with any of the other manufacturers pre-orders and given some of the horrendous delays there have been between announce and delivery, I'm very glad. I pre-order a lot and if its main purpose is to give them an idea of how many to make, I'm more than happy to oblige. But having to make a deposit makes me pause.

Just asking, I have never bought from Rails before (that I can remember) so I have no bias for or against them.

  6. So the P was delivered to some customers in Australia yesterday. Has anyone in North America got theirs yet?

    Cheers,

    David

Edited to resemble the English language. I’m getting anxious.

My two were delivered today to Arizona. On the layout within 5 mins. Lovely runners & look absolutely gorgeous esp 754 pulling rake of Bachmann SE&CR wagons.

  7. My set of SR Maunsell green ones came today.  :)  I fitted Kadee number 18s in them, which seemed to work okay with an E4 with Kadee 17s on my layout (which has a 30" radius curve).  I am very short of Kadees at the moment; when I re-stock I might experiment with 17s.

FWIW found the #17's a trifle too short. Maybe one end 17 and the other 18 would be perfect? I was using the Hornby H and the Bachmann C for testing. All in SECR colors, absolutely gorgeous.

  8. Yes I am.

Thanks very much Phil. Another I will be ordering when I can.

Amazing to think I will be placing more Oxford Rail pre-orders than either with Bachmann or Hornby this year. Not that I was in any way disappointed with the other manufacturers. In fact, quite the opposite.

Of course in monetary value, OR will be in last place - maybe that has something to do with it :-)

  9. From the catalogue:

    OR76DG009 - ROD Dean Goods No.2308

OR76BOOM02 - Railgun Gladiator WWII    (Excellent catalogue number by the way)

OR76BOOM01/XS WWI Boche Buster camouflage and ROD2330 celebration set.

Basically, you can have the gun without the loco and the loco, albeit with a slightly different number, without the gun. Military modellers are generally happy to paint things so renumbering a loco or slapping on some camouflage won't worry them.

Excellent news that the ROD Dean Goods is available without the gun.

I don't see any sign of it (OR76DG009) on Hattons or any of the other major internet suppliers or indeed on the OR website. Are you reading about it in a printed catalog?

  10. Having resolved to cease chucking icy water over Edwardian, can I perhaps offer a positive (though not original) suggestion. (Not "We're Aaaaall Doomed!")

It seems unlikely that it will be possible to assemble very much of a pre-grouping train for most companies from r-t-r sources other than over a quite protracted timescale. This is the elephant in the room and IMHO the door just ain't big enough for it to leave.

If one can accept that, maybe the answer in the short/medium term is a layout of an imaginary preserved line based on your preferred prototype location. That justifies the application of Rule One and will let you run any loco in any pre-group livery that the r-t-r trade does come up with, hauling whatever stock (e.g. a Birdcage set in SECR livery, Gresley teaks etc.) takes your fancy until you can obtain the stuff you really, really want.

I'd suggest a junction with the main lines running BR late steam/third rail (much of the infrastructure remained unchanged until steam vanished) with the branch being a heritage site in its fairly early stages and a pre-ban base for main line railtour locos.  You might well end up kit-building out of impatience at not getting your r-t-r wishes fulfilled quickly enough but even we BR modellers sometimes feel driven to that.

As and when you have accumulated sufficient pre-grouping material to stock the complete layout, you can just back-date it to your preferred era. That way you can also run the Atlantic in SR or BR livery* until Bachmann relent on the LBSCR tooling, somebody comes up with a conversion kit or you have acquired the skills and  confidence needed to tackle it for yourself. Just imagine that the original Beachy Head didn't get cut up and "your" railway acquired her.

    John

    * I'd go for BR because, in common with many other older locos, I think the LNWR-style lined black rather suited them.

That's pretty close to my layout. I run a rainbow mix of pre-grouping color schemes on a "preserved" line on the English south coast. I even have a station where it's Edwardian dress up day so I have a chance to display some period figures. The local auto club is always dropping by with their collection of steam trucks & traction engines.

I think the pre-grouping RTR scene has looked up a bit over the past few years. I've managed to acquire quite a few locomotives while cheerfully accepting some of the compromises in accuracy and I have far too many Birdcages on pre-order. And I don't mind paying the occasional premium for a club or LE model.

I'm optimistic about the future. Pre-grouping liveries always seem to sell out with maybe the E4 as an exception. I expect to see more.

  11. Mine has arrived and have been running it all morning. Wonderful model. Thanks Hornby.

I won't compare to the Oxford Rail version but I will say they look great together. You really can't go wrong with either.  I feel lucky that I have both.  Brexit is being very good to me, I'm buying quite a bit while the exchange rate is so favorable.

  12. I was told by one of the guys in the Members Lounge of the Bachmann stand at Ally Pally this weekend that the Atlantic and the Birdcages are now 'in China'.

    Progress at last ?

Early and late versions are planned, in BR and Southern liveries. Hopefully the early version can also be done in pre-grouping LB&SCR livery, perhaps as a Collectors club edition.

Hi, what is the implication of being "in China" ??
