Anyway, with our cup of tea this morning we shall view some more experiments, as we watch the B1 on its way from angles we have rarely, if ever, seen before.429563468_51282between.JPG.f8cf794b6212abd3a371c97320fa4cba.JPG

The severity of the curve is a problem again, of course, and if I'm going to persist with the last two I will need to extend the ballasting, but what do you think, is it worth doing at all?  The first one I do like, and I shall carry on using that angle occasionally.

I love the first image Gilbert. I like sneaking images through buildings! Rather Colin Gifford like!

    For each a glimpse...

I have made another short video for your for your enjoyment or otherwise entitled "Dieselisation at Deneside".  It features my pair of Hornby Metro Cammell DMUs and the Bachmann class 25 on a train of minerals.  Watch it here

    Hi Brian,

Like the video very much, the layout is great. I have a soft spot for type 2’s and also break tenders!

    Nice!

I’ve got the same job to do on my 7MT to change it from 70025 into 70010!

Good to see you completed the task :)

I had noticed but wasn’t copying I promise!

It makes a big difference; I had wanted to upgrade them before purchasing the loco! Also, the plastic deflectors were uneven when viewed from the front as supplied. If they are now, at least I know who’s responsible for it!

I look forward to your updates as ever.

    Regards,

    Pete

    Pete,

Don't be hard on yourself, your layout is marvellous. It's the sum of parts, and I can understand what might drive you to want to improve on some of those parts (in the future) but for the moment stick with what you're doing. I and others are seriously envious of the overall atmosphere you are creating.

    Regards,

Thanks again Andy, really appreciate the support.

Well I've stuck with detailing and weathering locos this week.

I have given my J50 a light weathering, although the image below is unfinished. This is after an initial airbrush session, I finished it with some powders and oil staining.

    J50_-_1.PNG.61a40df82fde779e0b12e358dd8bc9f0.PNG

I also bought some Silver Tay models etched brass smoke deflectors for my Britannia, and have ordered some name-plates and numbers so she will become 70054 Dornoch Firth. She was going to be 70041 Sir John Moore but there was a change of plan after I realised 70041 didn't have a BR1a tender (until much later on if at all?).

I made a bit of an error (I think) with the horizontal hand rail; on the single reference image I was working off (the clearest I had), the horizontal protruded the same distance from the deflector as the vertical. On most other images of LMR deflectors the horizontal protruded further, to act as a foot-hold I presume? I will have to live with it as I think it would look far worse to correct this now. The fact that there is a prototype image as per my model makes it bearable.

The next locos awaiting weathering; B1, std 4MT, K1 and my crab. I have changed the early emblem to late on 3 locos to balance up the mix as I've moved my preferred era to 1958 - 1962. I've also ordered a decent supply of decals from Model Master to re-number my '08, coaching stock and vans. Lots to do!

    Thanks for reading, taken care.

First class work as we have come to expect, you certainly know how to create a typical grimy railway scene, the Mill area looks great.

On the N2 did you use weathering powders around the coal rails etc to give the appearance of rust?

    Hi Richard,

    Thanks so much!

On the N2 the rust around the coal rails and bunker is actually from the airbrush; masked by holding a business card up by hand. I had to check though because it looks like powder in the photo! I'm sure it would give a similar result. I tend to prefer powders for rust due to the texture it gives but was having a play around on this.

    Stay safe,

    Pete

I'm sure plenty of others have said - I've enjoyed finding your thread and spending some time reading through the layout development.

What you've achieved with plasticard, glue and paint is astounding. Love the low track level shots of the already imposing retaining wall - topped by huge factories and the mill. Such scale created in such a small physical space.

All that with the attention to detail like the workshop interior, cat on the roof and the cut down posts of the old canopy. Weathering seems spot on all around.

Only 16 pages on here, one of the best layouts I've seen.

    Maq1988,

Thank you so much for the high praise, all the positive comments mean so much.

As I've mentioned before, I want to learn as much as I can on this layout and on the whole am happy with how things are turning out. There are plenty of shortcomings that get to me; particularly the track and signalling compromises and the proprietary point-work but I am looking forward to improving on these on my next layout.

    All the best,

    Pete

The N2 looks good; I wondered what paint you used for the handrails?  In the past I've tried using Humbrol Metalcote Polished Steel but found it looks too bright (like in your photos) so I've taken to using Humbrol Metalcote Gunmetal instead which while not quite the 'right' colour gives them a bit of a shine whilst not looking garish.  I use the same for bits like step edges and the bottom of cab doors which tend to get scuffed and show as bare metal on the real thing.

I'll be interested too see how your N1 conversion gets on, I might be tempted to do one myself!

    Hi 31A,

On the N2 I have used a small amount of powder from an AK Interactive 'Engines and Metal Weathering Set' specifically the 'dark steel' pigment:

    AK_Set.PNG.9c0fa48f5ef215f0f1e4effb7aa752ce.PNG

I find the military modellers have some fantastic techniques and are well catered for.

I have also had decent results with the Tamiya 'Silver' in small amounts, and very subtle polished edges from a 'solid' graphite pencil from an art shop. I have also read about people using these pencils to coat their track and act as a conductive layer. I haven't noticed any advantage to this method when I tested it on a siding.

Thanks for all the position comments!

    Pete,

Your modelling is fantastic and really captures the atmosphere of a mucky Northern town .

    Those gaslamps though.......

Personally I think (because the are working ones?) they look a bit overscale and in my view are not good enough for the rest of the scene.

Not easy for me to have said that, but sometimes less is more.

    Keep up the good work.

Thanks, and again- I have had similar thoughts!

I definitely agree, but they will stay whilst I complete the area generally. I have some copper tube and parts from many years ago when I planned to make my own; I have dug these pieces out and will hopefully get around to making some soon. I kept the ‘glass’ pieces from some Modelscene kits for this.

They are added to the to-do list!

  9. Paul,

I’ve been thinking along the same lines, don’t worry! I have placed it more centrally (before installing the lamp) and it just looked odd. Same story with the phone box.

I tend to drive myself mad with small decisions and have noticed there is a prototype image for most options and this is a good example!

I’ll continue to tinker before I mount them permanently.

Hi Julian. Nice enjoyable reading my friend!:sungum::sungum:

In light of current events we have surprised ourselves at how good we have been at pulling our horns in.

Having stocked the small pantry and freezer drawer with a sensible amount of food like most people we, then started making meals from leftovers and moved on to finishing up all the food that had already been opened before consuming the slightly out of date stuff and are now looking at the nearly out of date produce. So far it's been 2 weeks since I went grocery shopping and the only two things we have gotten into are the gorgonzola and bacon!

It's been a lesson in how much we waste by over eating, making expensive choices, letting things go off, out of date and treating the dogs. Who by the way need to loose some weight along with those over domesticate feline lodgers.

Yesterday I managed to find myself in the warehouse. After spending several hours locating a short cause by an over-center spring, I did the spring cleaning and had a good reorganization of all the modeling paraphernalia, Somehow I found about two dozen cardboard boxes that are now in the recycle pile.

Next I removed the tall shelving unit out of there and am now ready to make the baseboard that will join Goathland to the rest of the layout, Having the afternoon totally free I'm looking forward to getting stuck in big time!

    Shaun,

It all looks fantastic, I'm always impressed by your work.

Just been reading through this thread and just had to say that this photo looks amazing! Literally the only thing that gave it away to me was the lights in the Diesels cab!

What a fantastic piece of atmospheric modeeling!

    Hi Aire,

Thanks for the comment! I know what you mean; the contrast looks extreme in the photo but not as much in ‘reality’. It looks like the sun is the 2nd man!

    Thanks,

    Pete
