  1. Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help. I'm putting together a micro layout, which I have plans to extend to twice the length in the future. The track plan is attached (a very rushed version using MS Paint), and whilst I'm only concentration on the left half at the moment, I'd be happy to have the following question answered for the whole track plan.

Where would I need to place signals, and what kind would the need to be, to keep the operations of the layout prototypical? I'm modelling modern era (Well 1990s - sadly it's not that modern anymore).

    Many thanks,

    Rich

  2. Hi everyone,

I'm a long time lover of model railways and now it is time I started giving it a go!

I'm looking to model a full Great Western Trains Merlin HST.

I have a Train Pack from Lima which I will modify a little bit to bring the standards up a little if I can, but I'm finding it difficult to get hold hold of the MK3s.

When it comes to painting, what is the best donor? There are lots of IC Executive coaches around, and also a few fag packet (which seems like a good place to start as I assume the green is probably the same. Or when it comes to re-painting is it a strip back to plastic, and thus the livery on the donor stock doesn't matter?

I'm also thinking of mixing the rake with either Swallow or Fag Packet livery (although obviously only one) - think the re-paint/transfer from Executive to Swallow would be easier.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

  3. I'm looking at modelling the West Country region around the time of privatisation (probably south of Bristol for greater variety of running) and have some questions surrounding the Great Western Trains HSTs, and more specifically their MK3s.

Lima and Hornby both produced the MK3s in this livery, but with a difference. Hornby's coaches had Great Western written on the sides, and Lima had Great Western and INTERCITY on the sides of theirs. I know I have seem images of the Lima version, was the Hornby one incorrect, or were these prototypical as well?

In addition, were the Hornby coaches produced in this livery the infamous shorties or had they improved the tooling by then?

I'm going to be running them in mixed formations with Swallow branded INTERCITY stock (and will try and pick up some of the new Hornby HSTs as I hear great things about them. Does anyone know of any plans for Hornby to do a run of their new HST in GWT?

Sorry for so many questions - any help would be wonderful.

    Thanks,

    Rich
