  1. Hi,

Apologies if this has been covered before, I had a search and whilst I found some interesting info, and of course some more inspirational pictures, I didn't quite find what I was looking for.

My track plan is below - it is set in Nottinghamshire in the 1980's / 90's with colour light signalling.

So, I think I am on fairly safe ground to say that each platform would have a 3 or 4 aspect signal controlling access to the outward lines and beyond (and if I am wrong at this point, please let me know, gently!). However, where I am stumped is with the "internal" movements, i.e. involving the loco spur, siding and movement locos with coaching stock. So, specifically...

    1) Would the loco spur just have a ground shunting signal to allow a loco to proceed out of the spur, and presumably up to a shunt limit? If so, what would happen if the loco needed to go further down the line, i.e. beyond a shunt limit? If it needed to do this, would that mean that the loco spur also needed a 3 / 4 aspect signal?

    2) Access to the siding is going to be via platform 3. Would this be signalled with a shunting signal, and would this be post mounted or on the ground (or either). My understanding was that if you were overriding a red signal, the shunting signal would typically be on the same post.

    3) In the scenario that a loco hauled train arrives, there will need to be another loco to remove the coaches to free off the loco trapped at the end of the terminus - either a shunter to move the coaches to an adjacent platform or another loco which would take the coaches on the onward service. Would these movements suggest that shunting signals are again required for platforms 1 and 2 to allow this?

As always, any help is gratefully appreciated!

    Martyn
