Rolling stock for Cynwyd (shared with Llangollen in N) is a mixture of GWR and BR suiting the model to each era (if it had survived Dr Beeching's cuts) or combined as a "might have been" restored line. Each item has been fitted as appropriate with a tiny magnet to activate the automatic shuttle system at the front/back of each train formation.

Layout coming together well 

Took a picture of what remains of the old goods shed. As you can see only the lower storey remains but you can see the lower part of the second floor window stone work.The building now stores a large fuel tank for re-fueling the transport fleet along with general spares

Amazing the workmanship on the stone of that building and that it has survived! Has any of the station building or platforms survived?

Wiring completed, controls labelled and ready for testing. Each piece of rolling stock (at the front and end of each train formation) must have a small magnet attached beneath in order to trigger the reed switches buried in the track ballast and wired to the electronic shuttle/station-stop board. This enables the automatic train shuttle to work: slow start, acceleration, slow down entering station, station stop, wait time, slow acceleration, full speed to end-of-fiddle yard, stop, wait time, reverse and repeat sequence. Each parameter may be adjusted as required.

With three lines on each fiddle-yard sector plate, a different train (5 in total, one in-transit) may be released from either fiddle-yard by gently moving the appropriate running line into place manually and connecting the line selected electrically using the bull-dog clip. 

The main-line may be alternatively operated manually at the flick of a switch. The Goods Yard works on manual only with the turn-outs operated easily by simple push/pull rods (elegant and simple!).

Goods wagons will need modification to operate with the Peco Electromagnetic un-coupler system. Then the canvas will be ready to develop the scenic section of the lay-out...

Fantastic project. I looked into this myself and think you have a lovely little area to model. All the best with it. If it's a fraction as good as your Llangollen you will have a belting model.

Thank you John for your kind comments. I like exploring different layout configurations and to maximise exhibition/play potential while offering realistic detailed settings for model photographic/video purposes. If I can find a suitable prototype location to base these on, so much the better.

Great, many thanks for that. I visit Llangollen each year on holidays (I'm based in Wexford Ireland) and visited the Cynwyd site last year. We plan to visit Llangollen again this year from September 5th for 10 days.

For this model I chose Peco Brown Stone Ballast fine grade (PS-28). I used Deluxe's Ballast Bond product which worked well. Note push-rods for operating points which may be used from the back or front of the layout. A couple of pics show the rough location of some of the model buildings also.

I have now laid the trackwork and wired up the layout for manual DC and with a switcheable automatic shuttle system between sector plate fiddle yards. Also wired in are four Peco electromagnetic uncouplers around the Goods Yard.

Following my first foray into British outline N-gauge with Llangollen in N (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/91600-llangollen-in-n/) I have decided to develop a new end-to-end layout based on the closed station/goods yard at Cynwyd. This station was just over two miles west of Corwen on the Ruabon to Barmouth (Llangollen) line and was closed in 1964 with virtually no trace remining today. The layout was nice and simple for a fiddle yard-to-fiddle yard layout. My plan is to have a scenic section of 4 foot 6 inches (54 cm in new money), use DC power and to semi-automate the running (including station stops) using Heathcote Electronic's controls.

I was inspired by Mudmagnet's Orchard Road layout as I was helping him out at Exeter M.R.Show in June 4th/5th 2011.

I am thinking of making a shunting layout of two boards at 4ftx2ft (8ftx2ft) with plywood on a frame of 2inx1in and the legs will fold up underneath and will be put together as one module to go into a family car. The underlay will be laminate floor foam underlay 3mm thick, and I will be useing C+L point work and track on wooden sleepers, which I was inspired by Darren1 with imperil potteries. The control will be DCC by NCE Power Cab,I already have on my layout in the loft.

The idea I have with this layout is a freight train come's on scene and a diesel shunter will take the train off of the locomotive which will go of scene light engine, so the shunting begins, shunting the loaded wagons and making a train of emptys, a freight train comes in again and the shunter takes the train of the loco and the loco goes onto the emptys and takes them away,then more shunting.

I have completed and exhibited a compact layout in OO GWR outline with DCC sound/control using Kadee couplers. Overall dimensions are 4ft by 1ft (9 inches scenic depth). A three-way point is used to save space and gives 5 roads with points operated by push-rods. A short video was posted on You Tube:

The layout looks really good, and the new pictures show it off very well.  I like the way you've adapted the buildings to fit and give a good representation of the area; sometimes it's the 'flavour' of a layout rather than the slavish adherence to the prototype which gives its appeal - I think this is the case here.

Any plans for ongoing changes/improvements etc?  Might be nice to see the stock you're using in more detail...

I hope to be restarting my own version in OO soon, but will keep coming back for updates!

I think Llangollen in N is more or less finished as it is. I have since completed and exhibited a compact (4ftX1ft) GWR layout called Shunters Yard in OO to show off the Bachmann Class 64XX (on which I took a drivers experience at Llangollen). I will work on a few photos to show the Llangollen in N rolling stock which is mainly rtr early BR steam/diesel with Mk1 corridor coaches in liveries reflecting those preserved there at present (including a model of Foxcote Manor). I also have a selection of loose coupled goods to vary the scene. I plan to show the layout at a few more shows.

Looking forward to Llangollen in OO taking shape.

Thanks for the positive comments. I enjoyed building and showing this layout as I have visited Llangollen many times. I used Metcalfe kits mainly and rearranged these to mimic the prototype as closely as possible. A few Kestral plastic kits were also deployed. The tracks are Code 55 Peco including the fine 3-way point which enabled me to reproduce the BR pre-closure track layout well. Rolling stock is DC (Morley controllers) including heritage" early BR Graham Farish and Dapol. The road vehicles are modern era in contrast to the "preserved" stock on the tracks. Note the use of mirrors at three locations to extend the visual continuity of the river, trees and to show off the fine front to the Metcalfe detached houses - all in N gauge!

I am finally, I hope, getting the hang of Photobucket and am posting a few photos of Llangollen in N. This was first exhibited in Wexford, Ireland in October 2014, at Easter 2015 (Best Scenic prize) and in May 2015. Note the use of mirrors to extend the visual field of view. I have added much more detail since these early shots were taken and will post more in due course: N.B Photobucket pics need to be re-uploaded...

Members of this forum may be interested in my home/exhibition OO gauge multi-era Irish layout "Ballybeg" featuring DCC sound equipped locomotives. It has been exhibited 9 times including South Dublin Model Railway Club, St Josephs Wexford and Wexford MRC Festival Exhibitions. It has won Best Scenic and Best in Show Awards along the way.
