  1. The last time I can remember a fog man on duty was about 1977 at Walnut Tree Jct Cardiff Valleys. Each box had a list of fogmen and snowmen issued to them ,the last one I can remember issued was about 1978 because a lot of the Signalbox  footnotes were amended to remove the fogman by changing the acceptance of trains. Also a few distant signals became colour lights,no need for fog men.

  2. The Beatles film A Hard Days Night was filmed in March 1964 on the Minehead branch ,the reason being was the branch was closed on Sundays due to being no service in the winter, the same went for Marylebone station. For those Hydraulic fans , the train was hauled by Hymek D7047 from London , also D6333 played a part in it on the Minehead branch.

I bloody love hydraulics, even the models get me hearing that high revving in my minds ear.  I have memories of what must have been double headed warships running through Dawlish, and just love Westerns.  Lovely looking models from the glimpse.  Love the blue data panel on the Warship.

    Merry Christmas

A few more for you of Westerns and Warships

    Dear Torsten,

Protective mesh was not fitted behind the cab steps. This is a common misunderstanding unless you can find photographs of Class 14 locos fitted with mesh in British Railways use. Mesh may have been fitted to some preserved locomotives, but care is always needed when viewing preserved locos because of modifications.

We will not wire the running lamps as it is complex and adds to the cost of the model, which we want to keep below £300 for the DC version. Each lamp could show a red and white light, but they were not used as head and tail lamps for which standard oil lamps were used mounted on the  lamp irons fitted to the electric lamp housing.  Solder pads for stay-alive will be fitted.

Ultimately, all models involve compromises because of cost or tooling and manufacturing limitations e.g. the cosmetic springs on the chassis have been thinned to allow sufficient sideplay for the loco to traverse Peco Setrack curves. The art is judging whether a compromise will be a deal-breaker. Meanwhile, we have spent the past few days trying to solve a tricky tooling issue that involves a small, but visible detail.

    Thank you for your feedback.

    Kind regards,

    Chris K

    Hi Chris

I think you will find that the mesh behind the cab steps was fitted from new and is not been added to preserved locos.

Here’s a photo of D9509 at Canton 1968 also being one of the owners of D9521 in the past our loco had them fitted and all other Class 14 ‘s I have been on also have them fitted.

Hughie was a smashing bloke - no  doubt long gone - and he and I always got along very well.  That paid off because when Les, his Assistant got a job elsewhere (Hereford perhaps?) in 1973 Hughie always had me as first in line to pick up what would have been the Sundays on engineering work etc  that would have gone to Les.  The only rough one I got out of that was a turn at Penarth Curve North seeing various engineering trains in and out of a possession between there and Radyr Quarry and some clown of a tamper driver decided that red signals didn't apply to him and duly ran through some points.

Mind you Hughie always did his own budget submissions (the only DI in South Wales who could manage it) so he was very careful when it came to coverage and I had one Sunday at Maesmawr where I was supervising three different things at the same time, including a crane, while we were Single Line Working.  But definitely great days and it was in some ways a bit of a wrench going back to England in 1974.

Old Hughie only pasted away last year and I was at the funeral, there was some old railway stories told about him even his son said he liked a good derailment on a weekend.

I always got on well with him had a few telling off’s but he never held it against you. Gareth
