  1. 2. If the motor is as expensive as you say, then surely the manufacturer will have used a high quality, precision bearing commensurate with the overall cost of the motor.  Good bearings, especially roller bearings, are expensive and you get what you pay for.  Why not ask the manufacture what they have fitted and what the expected life (number of rotations) versus load is?

The cost of a motor does not necessarily relate to how it is designed to be used. The Maxon motor is of a coreless design and most manufacturers of this type state they are not designed for axial loads. In most cases the end load in one direction is taken by the retaining circlip rubbing on the face of a sleeve bearing.

  2. Looking at the photo showing the armature and brush gear I notice the commutatator has a slight groove from the brushes. The distance between the brushes is not much less than the diameter of the commutator and the brushes are on quite short arms which will not be very springy. All in all I would suggest that the brush pressure is too low which is giving poor contact between the commutator and brushes. This will cause arcing and wear to the parts and heat.

I would suggest trying to bend the brush arms a little to increase the brush pressure.

  3. I found one of these tools ideal for cutting sheets of polystyrene for landscaping the layout there wasn't too much mess generated.

They are expensive but it was an everyday tool for me worth it if you are a D.I.Y.er.

  4. AMD and possibly ARM are involved because the patch MS has produced for Windows does not differentiate which make of processor is being used. The patch will slow up the processor and AMD will add their own patch to disable the relevent part of the MS patch which is not needed.

  5. Similar to the OP, myself and my daughter have separate EBay accounts, she's on Facebook, I'm not. I use Firefox, she's on Chrome. Both on Windows 7.

Earlier today I clicked on a link in the EBay Madness topic. This evening on my daughter's Facebook feed she had a photo/message from EBay saying "Inspired ? Take another look". The item being that which I had viewed.

Again yesterday I visited for the first time a site called Firebox to look at an item my daughter had suggested as a present. Within half an hour she had the item come up on her Facebook feed.

Now, earlier replies inferred that this can happen with a shared IP address, however my daughter moved from home down to London a few weeks ago, so that connection has been severed.

    Thoughts anyone.

  6. I was looking at AA battery life a few months ago for a project my daughter was doing, she needed to run some white LEDs off just two AA cells. I found this site which gives the discharge characteristics for variou types and makes of AA cell.

There are comments about Duracell batteries, the Poundland ones are Duracell, but have a reduced capacity.

She ended up having to use the expensive Energizer Lithium cells because of their flatter discharge characteristics.

  7. Which network is that?

The one that currently is running hardly any trains due to snow? :scratchhead:

No doubt some wag will complain that WMR has got off to a poor start on it's first day. :jester:

There's also the website that covers them both, which you are redirected to if you try to access the old LM one
