  1. During the 'close season' I've managed to pick up a few O scale Alco's. Two of them are Lionel 3-rail, and require wheels, pilot spacers, handrails and couplers. As they were new, and under £100 each, I couldn't resist (despite the cost of postage etc). They are dummy locos, but that's fine for double heading.

One of the loco's is a bit of a rarity, although the roadname is a massive clue ......

  2. Could you possibly divulge your source for this information.  I have yet to see any reference to the sale on any North American boards. Tichy is working overtime to ensure all the types of HO window from Grandt Line remain available. Grandt Lines factory is only about 4 miles from where I live so I am very interested in their plans. The only thing on their website is: " Negotiations for the sale of our molds and tooling is in the works…"

A fbook entry from Dan Dawdy of O/S Scale Resource on 28 May at 21.27:

"Great news about Grandt Line and San Juan. Doug Junda stopped by our Model Railroad Resource table at O/S Scale West and said that he and Robert Stears have purchased Grandt Line & part of San Juan. More later!"   :onthequiet:

  3. Humbrol Acrylic Primer - comes in a small rattle can. :)

Simplest paint scheme ever: Prime it, paint the nose, draw on the black line around the yellow with a Sharpie, apply decals, seal with dullcote, then attack it with Pan Pastels to weather it up. :D

I've struggled with decals on primer, so have been looking thru the shelves at Halfords for a suitable gray for L&N and covered hoppers.

  4. Micro layouts are described as "within four square feet"

I'm thinking... 2' x 2' O scale, with a fiddle stick to represent the rest of the world.

I'm convinced it's not only doable, but operationally viable.

I think 4' x 1' in O is more practical, didn't some learned gentleman from the antipodes do something similar ?..................

It could also 'plug-in' to the FreemO concept. :senile:

Now where did I put that Lionel Trackmobile ?.................................. :scratchhead:

  5. The Monon only kept the C-628's for three years or so, returning them to ALCO IN 1967, who then resold them to the Lehigh Valley. I believe the coal service they were bought for never materialised, and at nearly 400,000lbs they decimated the Monon's trackage.

I hope you've beefed up your baseboards .................. :nono:

  6. Thanks guys, gives me something to consider. I'd planned to have the layout at 19'x9' in a U shape eventually, so maybe the O scale decoders might be a better shout?

Mick, got any links for those Germany stockists?

These are the guys I've used recently, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/232675855269?ViewItem=&item=232675855269

The decoder price seems consistent with German dealers, but the postage can vary. If you do an ebay search and select EU you should bring them all up.

  7. The mainstream is overrated! :D

Quick question for those more knowledgeable than me, if anyone can oblige.

Having never sound fitted a loco before, and especially not in O scale - could anyone suggest a good starting place for relatively inexpensive but good quality sound decoder to go in my GP35? It's an Atlas, twin motor version - currently DC.

    Thanks,

    Dan

You've hit the nail on the head there ..........  If you wire the loco in series and you are just pottering you can usually get away with a >1amp HO/OO decoder. I've done that on a couple of Atlas loco's, I think Jordan may also have done the same. As I'm hoping for a continuous run I'm now going for Loksound L V4, which are designed for O and plug straight in to the latest Atlas release (U23B's). These are more expensive, but come with the 'full throttle' feature and the sound appears to be very good. I've recently got these from Germany (ebay) as they are cheaper than UK, you just tell them which sound file you want loaded on.

Maybe try an expendable HO function only decoder with the motors wired in series to see if it can handle your ops. :O

  8. I'm about 80% into a chop-nose D&H RS3u - and have been for many years....  Chopping the nose and making the cab front windows, headlight box was easy.  Darned handrails though.  Chopping the GP9 nose, how easy can that be... and Des Plaines do the front cab window insert (got a spare).  Still, when you get the CMR bits let us know  :)

    Jason

I would do it myself, as I've done several low hood to high hood, but it's for an MTH SD7/9 whose bodyshell is a one piece molding. The easiest way of doing these I've found is to replace cab and nose as one, leaving the original battery boxes in place for strength.  :tomato:

  9. They appear to be using brass models as the masters for many of the newer shells. If the model has been done in brass and they can borrow a model, they will take a mold. This probably explains why they are so productive at the moment. There is a fbook thread which features their models among others, if people want to have a look at some pics of the latest models: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1238309839621320/

I'm interested in the O scale RS3 and GP9 low nose cabs, when I get around to ordering one I'll let people know wether I'll bother again. :O

  10. I would give CMR a try as well, they seem to be producing all sorts at the moment, and at a rapid rate. I've not tried any of their products, so I don't know how crisp the mouldings are, but many people seem happy with them. Now if they did half the stuff in O that they do in Ho or N ...........

    Hope this helps.

  11. One of my O scale Alco's - The very hard to find Atlas C424/C425. I'm not sure what happened to the handbrake chain ......  It just needs the numbers and letters removing, to enter service with the Cincinnati Belt & Terminal (tag line: We go round the middle - Not the outside). ......Or could it end up in PC black ?!

    Mick.

While we are on the subject, the original owner bought this to repaint into D&H. A year on it's still in Wabash blue ...... but at least it's in service (I'm not sure about the factory QSI sound, lovely horn at least).

  12. @mikjd; I'm assuming - probably quite wrongly - that those are MTH models? Not seen an Atlas model with opening cab door before.  :scratchhead:

The GP30 is a Williams shell (bought direct from Bachmann Parts with a 20% off voucher which they send every xmas - just sign up) It has the extended cab on the firemans side. It is going to be a dummy using Weaver trucks and the short Weaver GP38 fuel tank.

The C-420 is a Lionel model, it will be the first Lionel I've 2 railed.

The Alco already has it's top coat of rust, I see  :sarcastichand:  although the Geep must still be in primer  :beee:    :jester:

I must admit I do like that colour ........    unfortunately they will both end up in N&W 13-Dip satin black, with a bit of yellow trim for the Seaboard Alco.

My Weaver GP38-2 is in grey primer, and I have the rattle cans ready for CSX Bright Future... eventually....  :dontknow:

I would be interested in knowing what colours you are using for CSX.    :scratchhead:

  13. Daft question but what scale??  (Atlas do O scale 8-40B's). I tend to use the Atlas Parts Dept for all sorts of bits (don't tell everybody as stock can be in short supply) :secret: . There is usually a model in the range that has what I'm looking for, and the prices and postage are not bad. For example in O scale the GP60 has ditch lights and they were in stock last time I looked.

  14. The Pecos River boxcar should be worth a fair bit, assuming it's brass? I hope you got a bargain, Dan!! ;)

The Atlas GP35 is interesting; it has Alco-style trucks by the looks of it, not the usual EMD type. Must be correct to prototype.

Pecos River also made plastic boxcars, and it looks like one of them. The majority of Southern GP35's had AAR Type B trucks.
