    I have recently had the good fortune to be invited to contribute to one of the layouts run by Famous Trains in Markeaton Park , Derby , so I thought I would start a blog on any projects I get to work on.

    Firstly I would recommend anybody with an interest in Model Railways within the East Midlands area to pay them a visit or have a quick peek at their website ;

    As all work is undertaken on a volunteer basis they are always on the lookout for people to give a little time to contribute their skills in the upkeep and evolution of their layouts so if anybody fancies lending a hand then get in touch with them through their website.

    Here is a little project I have been busy with recently ;

    As you can see just a simple repaint to start and while I am aware of the excellent etches available from Jon Hall for the pulley wheels and counterweight ( see this thread http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/45589-trianghornby-r127-crane-conversion/ ) I had a Dapol diesel crane in the junk box so used some of the parts from that to make the pulley wheels , the decking on the crane platform is just scribed plasticard.

    Here we have the runner wagon for the crane , simply a suitable conflat wagon repainted ;

    Here is a departmental brake van to go with the crane , a Hornby LMS brakevan renumbered using Modelmaster transfers and some plasticard to represent the added ballast box ;

    All together now ;

    Just need to find something to use for a tool van now ! , cheers for looking .

    Next job is to sheet over the top of the decks with thin plasticard to cover the rivet holes and using Slaters embossed sheet make the decking for the well.

    Obviously the bogies just clip into the mountings and luckily I had some wheels from a couple of Parkside kits spare , here it is primed for painting ;

    Here we are with the base coat on ( the transfers are from a Dapol brake van kit ! so are completely wrong , but they just add that little extra detail )

    Here it is made to look like its seen a bit of service ;

    All in all a fun little project and obviously it would have been better with accurate transfers but I am happy with the way its turned out .

    After picking one of these up ages ago at a swap meet for pennies I thought I would have a go at updating it.

    Re-wheeling

    Having read a few threads on here about replacing the old plastic or metal wheels on these things or using Cambrian etc kit bogies , I had a rummage in my bits box to see what I could do.

    I had an old broken Mainline bogie wagon and realised I could use the bogies and after some cutting , part of the chassis for the mountings.

    So the old Triang bogies were drilled out and I got rid of the big plastic mounting underneath and with a bit of trimming the Mainline mountings fitted just right ;

    You can also see I have removed the well section to give a bit more depth to the well .

    Here is the first project that I am currently working on. I was asked to make a girder bridge for this layout ;

    Above you can see the gap that needed spanning . Originally the plan was to use Wills vari-girder but after rummaging around in a few boxes none could be found , so I decided to see if I could scratchbuild something suitable ;

    Here it is after painting mocked up , hopefully no one will notice there's no rivets or bolts holding it together !
