    After a great week in Singapore, based around the SCC 7s of course, catching up with a number of former colleagues, other friends and Veronica's family, I arrived at a grey and wet Manchester Airport on Wednesday morning. A Northern 323, TPE 185 and LNER Azuma got me to Darlington an hour late due to sundry landslips but otherwise in comfort and without drama.  The weather brightened up as we emerged from Standedge tunnel too.

     

    My son-in-law picked me up from Bank Top and drove me to their home in Shildon, where I'll be based for the next week.

     

    Regrettably, the Newcastle show this weekend has been cancelled, so I won't get the chance to see Grantham or any of my old mates that were going to be there, but there will be lots more model railway action over the next few weeks. In the meantime, my granddaughters are going to take me to Locomotion and, in return, I plan to take them to Beamish (which I haven't visited since 1976).

     

    More soon.

    Any chance a tin or two of paint could be added to your list of goodies you are buying? 👀

     

    Hope you have a wonderful time John, pity about Newcastle.

    Oxford open I picked up at Shildon for eight quid.   You can find these very cheaply now they've been out a while and other than correcting the brakes they take very little work.  I have also replaced the buffers on this one with the better LMS casting.

    Finally, although he won't be joining us at Newcastle, a nod to Mr King for another heroic contribution: sixty (count them) loco lamps.   Even at the rate we lose them, this should see the layout out.   A splash of silver paint, a .75mm hole and a spot of Tacky Wax and they're ready for use.

    Mr King must have lost my address!!

    I think I’m just in a state of denial as I will have to remove transfers and repaint it! 
     

    Although it really doesn’t make sense as to why they would paint all fitted vehicles red oxide but paint this unfitted wagon the same…

    The RF in the Leeds Quint had lost a roof vent.   I had scratchbuilt these, so I wasn't looking forward to trying to replace it, but in the end it was a fairly straightforward job.   The roofs on these have never been finished as I didn't ever get hold of the artwork for the roof boards, but there is a chance that something may finally develop.

    I put the chains on the first steel container last night as well.   I'm not happy with how well the tensioning is working, so 'll probably have another go.   Slack chains can almost look worse than none at all.

  6. Now that I am back from my short holiday down south with the missus it’s time to turn my attention back to railway modelling. 
     

    I’ve been suffering this year with a severe lack of motivation for anything railway related-I just can’t seem to put my finger on it. I have a tremendous amount of lettering to do…so that could be it. 🤣

     

    Anyway, I’ve had this Isinglass kit with me

    since I last toured the UK in March, it’s come from a friend who didn’t want it anymore. It’s the GNR Gresley designed invalid saloon, No. 43087. I knocked up some bogies for her, just need to make up the trussing and need to order some coach buffers, can anyone point me in the right direction?

    It'll give me another chance to work on my teaking… and she will more then likely be marshalled into the empty stock train for a bit of variety. 
     

    Now then, a wagon. I, like my colleague Jonathan Wealleans cannot go much more than a week without building or scratch building a wagon, it’s a serious medical condition. Others may suffer from it, it’s very contagious and symptoms can range from a cough to reciting wagon diagrams. 
     

    So, the next scratch build is an LNER Flat-T built by the LMS in 1937 to Dia. 114.

    I tend to buy RTR wagons before researching them and I ended up with a Bachmann LMS flat wagon that was built during the war. As I was flicking through Tatlows I noticed the similarities with this Flat-T and the Bachmann wagon. So the saw came out and I now had the deck of an LNER Flat-T…I then yelped when I saw the bogies….

     

    A quick chat with Al Turner at Niu Models and within a couple of weeks I had two sets (a spare in case of damages) of bogies 3D printed to suit. Thanks Al!

    There isn’t much left to do, I have some

    suitable buffers on the way and I will make up a few more lashing rings and she’ll be ready for paint.

  8. The last few months have been a bit hectic; I’ve been rebuilding my fiddleyard, my workbench and replacing some wiring. It’s been a bit full on. 
     

    It’s good to now sit down and get back to working on some models. 
     

    Some jobs that needed doing was renumbering and renaming some locos, a few I’ve had for a number of years and they’ve never even run. 
     

    Here’s an overall picture of the locos I worked on which can now be weathered. I’m going on a two week road trip down through Victoria and South Australia on Saturday so once I’m back I’ll go in to some detail on each loco as I weather them.

    Given the time when it was fitted, it's probably a Mashima motor attached, rather than DJH's own. If so, it's easily replaced; though you'll probably have to take the gearbox out.

    I’ve done some further testing and I believe it could well have been the DCC chip.

    No, in all seriousness, i wouldn’t accuse you of selling me anything that was a dud. All in jest. 
     

    I can’t remember if I paid you for the motor and the B16 wheels or just the wheels.

    Contributing here is always a delight; if something is wrong you get shown why it’s wrong and how to fix it. If something is right and perfect (is any model perfect) then you are encouraged to carry on and one receives praise. It’s a fantastic thread!

    We need more information.  Is the loco slipping, in which case it’s an adhesion issue, or is the motor slowing down, in which case it’s a power issue?  If adhesion then check if the bogie and/or the tender is lifting the driving wheels off the track.  This was a recent problem with the rear pony truck of the new Dapol GW Prairie.  If power is the issue it would definitely be worth trying it without the decoder to determine whether it is the motor or the decoder where the problem lies.

    It is definitely a power issue, but I am going to investigate this evening.

    Aye that’s exactly what it’s doing, the wheels don’t slip she’s just gutless.

    Anyway, did we run that B16 on Little Bytham? It was four years ago, and at my age................

     

    Did it pull anything then? A few suggestions, following up some already sound advice given by other posters

    1. Remove the bogie, and run it without it (the bogie might be taking too much of the loco's weight). 

    2. Arrange the drawbar so that some of the tender's weight is transferred to the back end of the loco.

    3. Is there space inside for more weight? I add ballast, even to white metal locos. 

    4. Run the loco against a block on the test track. If it won't slip, then it's a motor problem.

     

    I hope these might help.

    It was late at night for me Tony, my england gets betterer after a few coffees! 
     

    My grammar and punctuation has improved in leaps and bounds these last few years, i just need to work on my photography, my articles suffering because of it… anyway, just my criticism. 
     

    I appreciate all the help, from yourself and the others on here. 
     

    I’m going to try a few things and see what I can find. 
     

    The motor came from your cupboard Tony, so if the motor is gutless you can have it back 🤣

    Here are three of Bytham's quartet of B16s (there used to be two more!). The fourth member is my ancient B16/3 (61448, now very rarely used), built from a Nu-Cast kit when it first appeared. 

     

    The B16/1 was built/painted/weathered from a much-altered DJH kit by Tony Geary.

    The B16/2 was built from a much-altered PDK kit by Mike Edge, re-motored/repainted by me and weathered by Tom Foster.

    The B16/3 was built by me from a much-altered Nu-Cast kit and painted by Geoff Haynes.

    Seeing as B16’s have arisen in conversation…

     

     

    Ive got a DJH B16 that you fitted wheels and motor to Tony back in 2019, she’s since been fitted with a decoder and she doesn’t want to pull anything. 
     

    She runs fine by herself, really goes, but then struggles with quite a light load behind her- which is odd for an all white metal loco. The local loco repairmen, who’s brilliant, really knows his stuff and can get anything working (to bad he’s a tw*t), put her on a pull test and said she’s not slipping etc etc. It’s really confusing, I know you’ll say “take the decoder out” which I might still do and replace it with another…..but…

     

    Has anyone got any ideas?

  17. In the past year since creating this page I haven’t really been modelling how I used to. I think saving for the most recent trip in March 23 and a local holiday I’m taking in September had something do with it. I am hoping to be much more organised in the future and post regularly, I miss it. 
     

    With that being said here is a small update; a new workbench. 
     

    I bit the bullet and ordered some HobbyZone laser cut organisers from Hattons, the postage killed me but it was well worth it. I am slowly going through and organising all my tools, buts and pieces, kits and spare parts…

    I am also going to concentrate on finishing odd jobs, like painting and finish the kits I’ve started. Which reminds me I need to buy a lining pen!
