  1. Ooh, the NMRA show I could definitely attend, Derby is a short hop and I have nothing booked so far for that weekend. Crawley is a bit of a stretch though at 3 1/2 hrs travel each way. I guess this is one of those things where I wish I supported the shows better in the past, but sadly I didn't always have a car so I was reliant on friends mostly

  2. Hey folks,

Although I realise that there is a section of RMweb for shows, sometimes it can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack when trying to find information on what shows are happening within the UK, that have more US based layouts. I attended the one at Handsacre a couple of times, but I believe that it no longer exists and whilst filling out my calendar for events to visit this year, I'd like to experience more than just the usual British layouts and heritage railways.

I'm based in Lincoln, so bonus points for events that aren't in Cornwall or Far North of Scotland 😆

    Well............

Looks like the 7mm project now has some real focus thanks to Rapido.

In the meantime, , the 4mm W&U has had a shot in the arm with their announcement of the 04 and the pre-grouping W&U train packs..........oh and the tramway coaches in non-Titfield guise.......

Things are looking distinctly jolly damn bloody well up.

    Rob.

I hadn't realised they were doing the damn coaches in non-titfield guise, I have 2 of those on order ready for my W&U layout. Oh well, serves me right for not looking around before parting with a deposit.

    Morning Winny.

I'm sorry, I meant to reply earlier.

The ash I used to provide the yard surface Is a mixture of charcoal barbarcue ash with a few other different kinds of ash chucked in, possibly bonfire ash ?

I've had it for a while, sorry. It's done five layouts now.....
The ash is dusted over a layer of normal PVA using a plastic tea strainer.

You have to work quite quickly to avoid the PVA starting to dry out. To extend the drying time, I sprayed the PVA with water with few drops of washng up liquid in it, using a fine spray.

The ash is then added by being  forced/ground through the mesh using the back of a plastic tea spoon.

For the spray, I dismantled an old aftershave bottle  and used this as I wanted a fine spray, important for the next step.

The spray is then used to wet the ash. Important to add here that I spray at a distance to avoid disturbing the ash, hence the fine spray.

Dilute PVA is then dropped onto the wet ash using a syringe as you would when glueing down the ballast. In fact I used exactly the same mix.

It's important to avoid dropping the diluted PVA on from height as this could cause circular depressions or 'cratering' so the glue is added from quite close to the surface.

It's then left to dry out for as long as it takes, generally overnight.

Once dry, I rubbed the surface to remove any particularly rough bits and then hoovered up any loose stuff.

    Job done.

    I hope this helps.

    Rob.

This is going to be very helpful, I have some track to ballast with a combination of ash and dirt to replicate what the full size did in a yard.

    Thanks Rob.....

The poor quality of the image means that the 'tree' lacks a degree of sharpness.

It's a section of root from a pine tree. Dried in the sun today and earth roughly brushed off. I shall dry it properly and see how it and the other bits turn out.

    Rob.

This, Sir is ingenious. I've read so many times about taking stuff from the garden and utilising as trees, but I'd never considered roots before. Your tree looks great, I would have also thought it was made from wire armature if you hadn't said.

  6. I did consider trying to aquire and stretch if necessary some parts from the Rapido J70, but I'm not actually sure on the availability of spares for those. I did technically get some spare cowcatchers with my J70, (non-cutout version for use with alternative couplings,) but if I used them, I'd still need to fabricate some sideskirts, something I'm not sure I have the skills to do yet.

  7. Just blasted through this whole thread, a great model and captures the W&U perfectly. I also wasn't aware of the Sparkshot 04, for now I am going to buy some cow catchers and sideskirts from him for a rough and ready bodge on a Bachmann Junior Charlie loco, but now I know it's available, I shall eventually get a full kit to convert a Bachmann 03 (that'll be after the SMS Operation Shunt it competition has ended).

The third board is in the foreground of the last shot. This track will be inlaid hence the incomplete sleeping. More on rolling stock etc to follow.

Hi, I am gradually working my way through this thread after losing track of it when working flat out during the first lockdown, (classed an an essential business, we furloughed some staff, but had to keep a skeleton crew to keep running which I was a part of,) and I cam across the above picture in a post.  I'm curious about the dimensions of the spdt switches you used as I need to purchase some to carry out a similar role on my current build, but cannot work out which size to buy. Could you please assist?

I love the work I have seen up to now, (pg53 as I type,) I look forward to bringing myself fully up to date and following along with future progress.

Starting to get things in place for the debut exhibition I needed something to put the layout on. My Rickett Street set up wasn't going to work for a public setting so I found a pair of these on Ebay and assembled them today. Small when folded and nice and light. Buying these was cheaper than concocting something with wood and avoids my wayward sawing!

I realise it was a long time ago now, but do you have a link to these please as I've been looking for something similar for a long time

  10. Excellent news, I am glad you were able to sort it and all the information there wasn't lost.

Edit: I just went to the site and it's still throwing up a security flag and will not let me access it via Chrome

  11. Wow, that is a real clean slate. My layout, Gantsville, is on a very long break now as my present accomodation doesn't really allow for it to be placed in any other position than vertical, so i have gone back to UK outline and something based on the W&U tramway until I can find a bigger place to live that I can also afford. (Read as, not the super high rents some private landlords want for their clapped out old terraces round here)

  12. As the title states, sadly it looks as though we've lost the freerails site. It's a real shame as I used it as a good resource for ideas as I embark on my RC adventure, but it seems that we need to hope most of the information there was also reposted here. I am aware of a facebook group, but as I am in the process of winding down my presence on there in preparation for leaving, I cannot rely on that to fill in the gaps.
