  1. Hi

I am the wife of Mr Derek Betts (aka - fatcontrollerrailway) and I messaging to tell you all that my husband has passed away.  He died on 10th January at home with his family around him.   He had been ill for over a year.   I am just trying to sort things out and was wondering if any of the following is of any use to any member:

    Back issues  of Railway Modeller

Back issues of British Railway Modelling

    All in hard back binders.

Also I have over 100 books and dvd's that I am selling at 40% of their original price.

If anyone is interested in any of the above please email me at "derek.betts2@ntlworld.com"

    Many thanks

    Jean Betts

  2. When I worked in Hartlepool the common saying was Labour could put a Monkey up for election and still win. After the last 48 hours I doubt that would still ring true.

I  stayed in hotels for a large part of my working life and although it sounds great the novelty soon wears off..

Thanks Jim for a wonderful  thread. I am not in very good health at the moment and so reading your thread and learning about the present day railway cheers me up no end.

  3. 31 466 was repainted into EWS colours for the Toton TMD open day in May 1998 and soon became possibly the only one of the class to be in traffic running in the EWS colours until being preserved in February 2001.In preservation it seemed to carry this livery until in 2014 it was purchased and returned to traffic in "Trainload" livery.

I am interested tto read that after such a length of time in preservation the Locomotive should be purchased back into the main railway network and also, did it ever return to EWS Livery for open days etc.

I know that Duke of Rothesay did derail and overturn in the late 40s, but it was down in the London suburbs. There are photos of the aftermath.

Wicky Pedia :- On 17 July 1948, locomotive No. 60508 Duke of Rothesay was hauling a passenger train when it became derailed inside Barnet Tunnel, Hertfordshire due to a combination of faulty track and excessive speed. The whole train was subsequently derailed on points at New Southgate, London. One person was killed.

I will 100% agree with that statement - with the caveat that I can only judge layouts I have seen first hand - but it is a close-run thing with Copenhagen Fields.  These are certainly two of the very best "railways in the landscape" (but in very different landscapes!) and are the best demonstrations of where railway modellers create works of art, not just a model of a railway.

I once spent about 3 hours at the 1993 Wigan Show and probably spent half that watching Chee Tor, I just had to keep going back for another viewing.

    Northmoor,

I agree whole heartedly with your comments, but would had a third "Totnes" .

It was quite a surprise to find out that Ken (and you) knew Roy before I did and I met him around 42 years ago. I did see him behind Gainsborough Central at a show in Doncaster before that, probably around 1975/6 but we didn't know each other then.

    Tony,

I have not made myself clear, I met Roy at a show many years (50) ago in Paddington at the hotel near the staion and after me voicing my opinion that an L1 was not likely to work a Grantham to Peterborough stopper, got told to go  away in two words made up from 7 letters as did Sir I understand !  This was with High Dyke. I did my apprenticeship with Ken and Roy's notoriety spread around the CEGB power stations so I heard stories about him when working at various power stations. Ken would often talk about Roy and when asked to do the control panels he asked Roy if I could be involved, hence I got to know Roy properly and became a friend. Ken lacked confidence for some reason and yet he was the finest Instrument Engineer I ever met and me helping him made me chuckle. I was not bad at my trade by any means, but not in the same league as Ken.There is no bias in the comments about my cousin, I speak as I find.
