Back to the 153 VIU
I filled the marker lights with black tack - seems a much easier thing to do than fill and paint 🙂
I bought some dual colour SMD LEDs for the marker/rear. Printed a new light box and light guide for the new led and glued the led to the back of the light guide.
i will fit SMD LEDs into the box for the headlights too. Just need to work out if I need to print light guides for those.
i plan on putting the resistors in the light box too and then probably run the wires direct to the decoder
So, light guides all printed, LEDs superglued and resistors in place. The headlights are on a common resistor (they won’t be operated together) and the marker/rear similarly. 5 wires to go back to the decoder at each end…

If happy with the position of the stripe I would apply a decal over the top. I’ve done it on a coach and it covered no problem. Getting it to sit down on the grills will take some doing though.
Here is the coach I mentioned:

What blue paint did you use for the viu? It looks stunning, would it be possible to get some printed or the stl file for the parts for it please?
Andy
Hi Andy
Thanks, I appreciate the comments! I used Vallejo Game Colour Electric Blue 72.023
Feel free to PM me if you are looking for parts.
Thanks

I remember the class 47 "Charles Rennie Mackintosh" the Scotrail livery 47/4 in around 1988 and the blue was damaged showing the red underneath. It literally had a single blue top coat, I always suspected someone had bought a can of non drip gloss from Mc B&Q and slapped it over the red. Overpainting red with light blue in N or 00 is going to be a nightmare, the strip will look really thick by the time you get enough pigment to stop the red showing through. Paint thickness doesn't scale...
The bodyside Black is dark grey.
I can't remember any Scotrail livery 37/4s back in the 80s/90s the ones I remember and photographed were mainline or large logoIf happy with the position of the stripe I would apply a decal over the top. My 401 is on order for exactly this reason. I was going to convert an Accurascale 37409 but even if I have to remove the red stripe and end up repainting the light grey this will be an easier mod than removing the ETH nose connector, cutting in the body side window and still having to do a repaint!

Without the lights wired in yet nor the underbody inspection lights fitted. The macro zoom shots are a little unfair though!:

Thinking about the wiring for the VIU units.... I think I am going to cut the fixed cab interior off of the main interior and mount both cabs and lights permanently in the body along with the decoder and speaker. That way all the additional wiring for that stays together in the body. I'll then use the 8-pin connector as Hornby intended but take the yellow or white off the PCB via the existing connections to feed the chassis lights and the other I'll disconnect from the 8-pin decoder plug and re-purpose it for the end lights....

Also adding to the NVA fleet. I’ve got more detail into the doors and buffer beam/rub strips. These will take Keen Systems couplings and sprung buffers.
(it has been noted that I got my number upside down. Doh, that should have been the easy bit!)

153376 appears to have got ahead of 153311!
Decals in progress of being applied. I have the ends to do still, but looking good. I think I will make the ploughs body mount at some point too. I’ve also got to work out the wiring for the lights and decoder with regard to body removal once I have the glazing back in..

NMTs are dark grey and where done as part of the recent repaint. 277 has not had any grey applied too it. think what you have done with your model suits it and helps tie in with the coaches which is the whole point of the yellow
Very interesting. Clearly it must be the gloss reflecting the sky, and just shows how you can't trust colours from videos and pictures.

I am clearly using paint to simulate reflected sky!

From this video they all look they are now grey:

I am updating my NMT fleet and was looking to see what changes I need to make to bring it up to date. My main question is regarding roofs of the power cars and the mk3 coaches. Does anyone have information/pictures that confirm the current roof colour of all the vehicles? It’s so difficult to determine if they are all the same or if some are now grey and others black. Any help much appreciated!

Wonder if its had a quick paint while the NMT ones where done. Will ask about. It does look good with the grey to match to coaches.
@The Angry Scotsmanwill need to try and catch you at glasgow this year. Be good to put a face to the name and meet another fellow RTC modeller. 277 is well worth the effort, just need another power car to get painted to match now
I do need to tidy up my NMT ones. It looks like one or more have grey roofs now. Do you have any definitive info on those!!?

it’s Vallejo Air Dark Sea Gray 71.063it’s not a perfect match but good enough for small parts. Add a hint of dark brown would be better as it’s slightly too blue
I actually went and looked again at what other colours I had. I just went over them withModel Air Sinai Gray 82 71.142 and that's a better match. A slight blend of the 2 likely get you near on perfect

Fiddly black on the cab ends is about acceptable! Quick body on shot to get the idea of how it will look:

Looking really good!
Is that a stock Vallejo colour for the parts on 311's roof or a mixup job?

…. I managed to get away with painting the roof additions and adding them rather than a full roof respray on 153311

153376 getting a colour coat

Well, I have now seen conclusive evidence that the rear roof is indeed grey (Jan 2024 at least). I'm now annoyed I went and changed it to black!!! I'll see if I can change it back...
I compromised. Fitted extra detail and a darker grey!- 3

No 3D prints on this one, but as an interlude and having gotten hold of one of the fictitious jubilee HSTs at a good price, I thought I’d have a go at this one (one of many on here I know!). I used Vallejo and Lifecolor paints (and a Halfords Ford Polar Grey aerosol I had laying about). Overall I’m pleased but I made a bit of a pig masking the metallic roof panels and I will probably have to weather them in.

The underbody inspection lights are pre drilled to take wired SMD LEDs. So far I’ve got to 9 functions for the lighting….

Change of approach on the plough equipment. Much happier with this:

I think I need to play around with the bits around the plough. Bottom piece a bit bigger, upper piece a bit lower
