What are the most glaring gaps when trying to model LNER/BR(E)? And spare a thought for modellers of Scottish areas, for whom the answer is just about everything.
Decent Gresley main line coaches (some Scottish peeps could use them as well).

Happy New Year Steve. I see motive power shortages have become so critical that control have had to 'borrow' a couple of exhibits from the museum at York. Vintage locos out on the national railway network; it'll never catch on you know.
Hard times Neil! I'm assured they'll still turn a wheel ....

Thanks Steve - so the Western instructions were considerably more restrictive than those for the Eastern and, later, BR as a whole.
I wonder what happened between 1960 (nothing in the BR GA - likewise in 1972) and 1981 (as above)?
It seems so John. I have got an earlier LNER one which I didn't copy as 1947 is nearer to Little Bytham's period, but it said much the same thing as the 1947 one anyway. Strange there's nothing in the interim BR ones, as the wording in the 1981 one isn't so different to the LNER one. Perhaps it appeared in a different document at that time, although I can't imagine which one. By 1981 the format of the GA seems to have been re-hashed a bit and it's divided into different Sections, of which Section 3 was Train Operating.

However, I suspect a Special Instruction would have written with regard to the car carrying passenger service. It may even be an instruction, in a copy of a Sectional Appendix of the period.
Signalman of the time would no doubt have been commenting about the arrangement. They had already caused enough fuss over fixed tail lights on the early DMU’s, to the extent the use of the oil lamps was reinstated!

In 1947 the LNER had this to say on the matter of vehicles behind the rear brake of passenger trains, which should give plenty of scope for most model railways:
In 1981 BR had expanded on it a bit, but still needn't bother most model railway operators:

Not old enough then and when old enough not bright enough! And no good at cricket anyway. For anyone who might not know, the cricket ground in Dave's photo is the playing fields of the Boys' High School.

Well according to the BR Database 92184 (32-859b) was withdrawn in 1965, at which time there would have been very few diesels in blue livery (probably only 1!), while 92212 (32-859a) was withdrawn at the beginning of 1968 when there would have been a few blue diesels around, bearing in mind what PMP has said above.

Thank you.
Having exchanged information with 31A, I have confirmed that the LNER revised recording and reconciliation of stock from years ending March to years ending December early on, the accounting year matching the calendar year and no doubt a result of the legal formation of the Grouped companies wef 1st January 1923. It seems that BR continued that practice, probably for the same reason. I am reminded too that Mr Geddes Transport Act required the submission of masses of operating and other statistics on an annual (calendar year) basis or even more frequently.
LNER Locomotive Committee November 1923: This total programme was intended to cover the period until 31 March 1924. On acceptance of the programme, the CGM intimated that he proposed in future to bring a programme to each November Board meeting, to cover the twelve months ending 31 March in the following year but one. (This led to joint meetings of the Locomotive and Traffic Committees, which discussed the programmes in detail and made recommendations to the Board. However, complications emerged in that whereas a programme would end on 31 March, the financial year ended on 31 December. This affected the presentation of statistics, as the Chief Accountant's annual figures were for the year to 31 December.)
Thank you for sorting that out, and sorry to have raised concerns unnecessarily.1 hour ago, Fishoutofwater said:In the 1960's BR accounting year was 1st Jan to 31st Dec. It changed to 1st April - 31st March in the 1980's sometime but do not recall actual year.
Thank you for that. I must admit I didn’t realise it had changed that recently; my memory must be worse than I thought! Apologies again …. !- 1

In which case the entry on the carriage record card would have read 13/66? Longworth translates this to (month) 12 of 1965.
Under the current system the 4-weekly accountancy period which ended on 31.03.66 would be described as Period 13/65, but as I say, I don’t know whether the Railway’s accounting year ended on 31st March in those days (as it does now) or on 31st December? Not a thing I’d considered previously in connection with the Longworth books; I’d previously taken the months quoted in it to be months of the year - perhaps I’ve not come across one withdrawn in “Month” 13 before!

Hi, on the br database it is showing that the last sheds for 90755 and 90763 and 90767 were March, Carlisle Kingmoor and Motherwell. Will the models carry shed plates for those depots when they come out?
also is the plan still to do oil burners next including 3672?thanks Fred
Surprising, I didn’t realise and of the WD 2-10-0s were allocated to March in BR days, I thought they were all in Scotland. They may have worked from March for a while when new before moving to Scotland later; perhaps this is an area where the BR Database information is incomplete?

It was condemned in period 13 of 1965, i.e. at the very end of that year. The accounting periods were of 4 weeks.
I’m not sure whether Railway Accounting Periods were the same then as they are now, but nowadays Period 13 would end on 31st March….

Hi Manna, good to see you back, and that looks like an interesting project!
Hope the Covid isn't too bad; there seems to be quite a lot of it around in the UK, not sure what Aus is like.
Anyway, all the best for Christmas and the New Year!

A few pics from a day out with 68030 'Black Douglas" with Set TP06 on its last day with Trans Pennine Express, and indeed the last day of Class 68s and Mk5 coaches with Trans Pennine Express. Sorry, they're not brilliant photos but the weather wasn't great and it wasn't always easy to travel and also take photos. It was distinctly noticeable that there was a good turn out of enthusiasts along the route, including a good proportion of the younger generation.
