  1. Hi

I bought a Bachmann Network rail Class 57 that had DCC sound fitted. I removed the DCC Sound chip and speaker (pics attached), but can't remember which company made this particular DCC Sound chip?

Is there any way to work this out as I'm now looking to sell it but don't have a Bachmann Class 57 to try it on?

    Thanks!

  2. 5-car units mainly run in 10-car (2x5-car) formation. So buy two and stop asking the same question over and over. It is tiresome.

There is no need to be so forthcoming and abrupt. I’m simply asking a question. As a young person and a relative newbie to model railways, with an attitude like yours, how are new people meant to understand the hobby, let alone inject much needed revenue into buying these models in the first place?

  3. Hi all,

As the Hornby R3762 is a Class 800/1, is it not technically meant to be a 9-car train? I've obviously found the R3762 5-car train pack, but I can't find the extra 4 coaches (that are supposedly meant to be with this train) on the Hornby website, or am I mistaken, and is this only meant to be a 5-car train?

Hornby released the two-car IEP test train, and has now launched a 3-car pack to make it a full 5-car pack, does this mean the R3762 LNER is meant to be run as a 5-car train then?

    Thanks

  4. What

The 5-car LNER Class 800 being released , represents only a small proportion of the LNER fleet.

There are only 10x 5-car Bi-modes on order for LNER, out of a total order for 65x 800's and 801's.

    42 will be Electric 801's

    22 will be Bi-Mode 800's  (inc. 13x 9-car)

    43 will be 9-cars

    .

Will Hornby release a 9-car version of the LNER IEP? Or even a 9-car version of the GWR Green IEP? I ask, as I'm not sure if I should get the 5-car versions, as I really prefer longer trains (I collect HSTs and generally have 8x/9x coach rakes for each.

    Thanks

  5. Hi all,

Hornby's 2019 has personally been amazing for me as I mainly collect HSTs along with some other diesels/EMUs. However, only being a year or two into the hobby, I'm a bit confused as to why there are so many MK3 Coaches (however, that could turn out to be a good thing, I'll explain below).

As such, I collect HSTs and run their full prototypical rakes on my (soon to be) layout. I try to collect 2x of each HST and coaches so that I have 2 sets running in opposite directions from one another.

Therefore, could someone please advise the correct 8x/9x MK3 coaches to get for each of the NEW GWR, Scotrail, Cross Country and LNER HSTs? I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks

  6. Hi all,

Just received an email to say that my Kernow order for the GWR sleeper “day pack” has been shipped. I therefore wanted to double check the formation in which these class 57 GWR sleeper trains normally run so I’m running them correctly.

Am I correct in assuming that they have 4x sleeper coaches, and then the 3 coaches that in the day pack (standard, buffet and brake coaches)?

    Thanks

  7. Hi all,

I'm currently saving towards buying the Hornby Class 800. Currently, these are being produced as 5 car sets, however I was thinking of buying the Powercar set, and then 3x 3-car coach packs (which would leave me with 2 spare coaches). I know going down this route is completely prototypical, as there will be similar coaches, and I believe in the 9 car set some of the coaches have different attributes (toilet tanks, brakes etc), however I'm not too much of a prototypical modeller.

I of course would rather go down the official 9-car Hornby Class 800 if they were to produce one, however do people think this is possible? Having now owned multiple Hornby retooled 8-car HST sets, I would've thought a 9-car Class 800 isn't too out of the question?

Would rather save my money and hold out if Hornby are to release an official 9-car set, but at the same time, I don't want to miss out on these 5-car sets and then have them sell out!

    Thanks

  8. At the bottom of AndyY's post announcing the 2018 releases it is stated that the 168/170/171 have only just started the process and aren't even at the CAD stage yet.

I'm new to model railways - therefore by them not being at the CAD stage yet, are we looking at an early 2020 release date, or something even later?

    Thanks

  9. Hi There,

as the new improved models with functioning BSI couplers have yet to de delivered from the manufacturer ( or the coupler listed as a spare part AFAIK ), then I doubt anyone has been able to try modify the older models with the new working BSI coupling to allow a consist that you are asking about.

However many people have, in the past, used non prototypical Kadee Knuckle couplers to allow models of modern diesel and electric units to be consisted to run in multiple.

Some people have added a dummy "electrical & air connections" box under mounted via the uncoupling trip pin and others just left it missing.

I did some lima 156 units and Hornby 142 units using standard length ( #5 ) and a long length ( #18 IIRC ) arm at alternate ends to allow ease of traversing the tighter than prototype curves most of us have to use ... and it was a bit of an experiment as to the exact distance I need to set the draft boxes on the underframes, but once done I used the same distance on every version of that model from each manufacturer.

Thank you for your reply. In regards to the modification that you’ve mentioned, I don’t mind if the coupling is non prototypical, however, does this require any soldering/drilling etc into the chassis?

    Thanks

  10. Hi all,

With Bachmann's 2018 releases now announced, their was also the welcome addition of the Class 170 and the other DMUs also having functional BSI couplings that will allow multiple class 170s to be fitted together to form a Consist.

I already have the older class 170, 2 of them in fact, is there anyway I can form a consist with them with some modding? Has anyone successfully done this? Would rather pay a bit of money and get them modified, rather than £250 each for 2x new Cross Country 170s!

    Thanks

  11. Hi all,

I'm looking to get the correct formation for the Hornby Cross Country HST. I understand that Hornby didn't release a buffet car as the real thing had a quasi-buffet car.

    Therefore, I've found this:

    1x R4376 TGS

    1x R4373 1st Class

    5x TSO (2nd class) - R4374A, R4373B, R4373C and ....

Therefore, what are the remaining TSO coaches and their respective Hornby R numbers? And I have got the above formation and R numbers current?

    Many thanks
