Ah yes, the other end of the spectrum:

    4 wheels - 3 compartments

    4 wheels - 4 compartments

    6 wheels - 5 compartments

    8 wheels - 6 compartments

This must be about the same length as the Triang clerestory coaches, which for my tastes is the maximum length of coach (regardless of realism) for people who don't have room for huge gentle curves.

    Where did the bogies originate?

I might be in the process of changing my mind, and aiming for this length with a brake & luggage compartment. Or perhaps a lavatory. This isn't Swallows and Amazons, so the passengers will have to go to the loo eventually.

It comes in at a scale 42 feet and is a window and door shorter than a Triang clerestory. The bogies are Parkside PA108, the former Ratio ex LNWR 8 footers

Another slow project is this LCDR  shunter, a Hornby J83 cut down and sitting on a Bachmann pannier tank chassis.

There is just about enough clearance over the motor.

LCDR T class? If so I'll be very interested in this as I have a half built one from a J72

    Hi Sophia NSE

Is Number 12 sitting on a Hornby 14XX chassis ?

These Hornby -Wren-body shells work well for smaller tank types.

Problems that have stopped this loco from being finished. Several listed below.

    044tQbogieprops5a.jpg.09261bdbba3d7a7ae4b2587e4a057cba.jpg

A * Bogie pivot screw here because there is a tapped hole in the chassis here, not necessarily an ideal point for the smooth running of the model.

I hope to replace the bogies with a metal one incorporating electrical pick up but must not touch and short against the bottom of the chassis.

B -B and C the green lines are where I hoped to make the chassis pivot relative to the body shell

    C

D -The transmission shaft is now finished but not shown in this photo.

E -Some sort of pickup is needed.

F -Some sort of pivoted coupling link here to stop too much sideways movement of the bogie.

It is indeed on a Hornby 14xx chassis. So much easier than the Airfix version

Heading back to the UK, at long last - work has started on converting that lovely Train Simulator 4-4-0 into a 3D-printable model for Linton Town. Yet to be decided are name and number for this beast, which surely must be one of the most prestigious locomotives of the company. 5'6" driving wheels should give it a lively turn of speed, and hopefully a handful of bogie carriages won't tax it too much.

    GSR_4-4-0_v7_2023-Sep-03_02-58-03PM-000_CustomizedView32735296922.png.383ed8bf004399432d3e99583d2683b2.png

Currently name-wise I'm thinking of Lady Sybil Ramkin. There's a long way to go yet, but the locomotive is definitely taking shape. I'm not sure what to do for the tender - whether to go for the "standard" GSR tender (a chopped-about GBL SECR Wainwright tender) or to draw up the shorter tender as seen on the Train Simulator model. Then again, maybe that should become the "standard" GSR tender...

I've drawn up Salter safety valves, but to be honest these will likely not be printed, being replaced with brass turnings, or possibly spring cases fabricated from brass rod and tube. Either way, I'd like them to be appropriately shiny, along with the smokebox-mounted lubricators and whistle.

I would love to see that with smokebox wing plates!

Well done, I do like number 34.  I've always thought these are very attractive little locos. Can you say what the chassis is and how you constructed the body please?

    Tony

Hi Tony, 34's chassis is a pair of GBL 57xx chassis cut and shut. The smokebox and boiler are from a Mainline Dean Goods cut so the dome is closer to the front of the loco. The cab is from a GBL C class with scratchbuilt side overlay/tanks. The bunker is cut and shut from a pair of Wrenn/Hornby Dublo R1 bunkers.

Hope this of use to you!

  6. No I haven't forgotten about this, I'm still waiting on moving into my new flat, plus it's been very busy at work. Instead, I've been finding bargains and doing some bodging and bashing of locos...

My attempt at backdating a GBL static T9 with a working chassis under it

    IMG20230611183334.jpg.69031d31ffbc71c0206a1ec0623c3b94.jpg

A Hornby T9 which will also receive the backdating treatment

A K's LNWR Webb Coal Tank I got from eBay as a non runner and was working nicely after 5 minutes in the shop!

And finally my attempt at being inspired by GWR 34 having seen one on a layout at Ally Pally

No update on the layout yet, but after taking a bit of a drive today, I have put a few boxes on it!

These are the first of my exclusive models that the shop has commissioned! the SE&CR 6 wheel brake van

I had to have a look at one on the layout, so the first one came out the box (and will be staying with me obviously)

Rapido have done a great job once again.

The shop has a few left, but not many, these should start shipping tomorrow!! It's all a bit exciting!!

Sorry for the shameless advert, but it's my thread, and I'm very excited!

    Hope you enjoyed,

A K's Coal Tank advertised as a non runner for under £30. Under 5 minutes at the model shop I work in and it was a runner!

I'll be backdating it into LNWR livery as I'm one of those weird pre grouping modellers 🤪

I find this idea very appealing Fronkenshteen's monster especially. Hornby cut and shuts are always great but short bogie coaches might be a possibility too, I need to find a photo but I've kitbashed Hornby four wheelers into four compartment bogie coaches with some 3D printed components inspired by the pair of Ex North London coaches turned into bogie coaches at the Pallot Steam museum on neighboring Jersey. The concept might just be up your alley Sophia.

I have been quite tempted to put some 7' bogies under them, if I could get hold of some

Are you aware that the Germans built a number of railway lines of varying (narrow) gauges when they came for their holidays in 1940? Locomotives I think were French.

Previous to that trams had run between St Peter Port and St Sampson's harbours.

Yes, I have a book on Channel Island railways, which gave me the idea

  11. Here's my very late (and unfinished) contribution to a very entertaining thread

    IMG20230207192903.jpg.c5c9e2fc4f5801b754dd62ae36e6b1d3.jpg

Yer GBL T9 backdated with the smokebox from a knackered M7 body. While removing the smokebox it was obvious that it had been dropped as it ended up in three pieces!

    IMG20230207192955.jpg.ee783518c8c1b4e7bff108b602aee40e.jpg

I then managed to find a white metal chassis suitable for a T9 with room for a backwards X04 motor. I had some suitable wheels in a spares tin along with a compatible gear and bunged it all together. Just need to add rods to the wheels now

    IMG20230207192935.jpg.57f9df151b09fe806cd97780ebfced0c.jpg

The tender is sitting on a set of Hornby T9 tender wheels, currently a different shade to the loco, but eventually it will be painted in Drummond green

    IMG20230207192941.jpg.02d31eeac3f5bf5ef78f12a43d9f0867.jpg

I have some Hornby T9 buffers and will be adding handrails as well as replacing the front step that broke off during plastic removal, never to be seen again!
