  1. Attitudes/prejudices certainly lingered. During my time at Haymarket in the late 1970s (long after St Margaret's had closed of course) there were traincrew who wouldn't acknowledge each other's existence because their grandfathers had worked either for the North British or the Caley. Add to that the sectarian mix of Hibs and Hearts supporters and rostering got quite complex - although I gather it was worse at Heaton where the roster clerks had to be aware of who was married to whom as well as other "interesting" personal relationships.

Somehow reminds me of the story of Concrete Bob's grandson William (or was it his son?) in the construction firm; Just because he was a relation he couldn't skip the ranks to get to the top - he had to make the tea and tidy the tools away after the day's work.

  2. The problem is Alan that the line occupancy at PN was such that it was virtually impossible to find paths for any more a lot of the time.  I would not therefore be happy to add any more, much though I might like to do it. It would also open the floodgates to goodness knows how many more locos and stock, which would not be a good idea, or so my bank manager, if I had one, would say.

If stock is a problem then perhaps some of us your followers could lend you some for such operations

  3. It might be just me, but I think the GWR and SR met as far north as Cheltenham, if you include where the M&SWJR met the GWR Banbury/Stratford to Cheltenham lines.

(And you needn't go far away from the centre of Cheltenham to enter rural landscape)

  4. Hi Gilbert

What, if any, locos do you have to represent Norwich/Peterborough to Leicester/Birmingham traffic? I understand even B1s (although not perhaps on passenger) were regularly found at Birmingham New Street and Saltley Shed.

  5. I read about this layout called 'Holcombe Brook and Tottingdon' (thread attached below) where the three main scenic sections were each separated by a covered bare baseboard where the running lines ran through. Perhaps you could do the same between this project and your future bigger plan, or even create it so that if you want to exhibit them they can both be exhibited either together or independently of each other

  6. We shall start today with this 6.35 Down Hull.which puzzles me, not so much in its composition but in the order in which it is formed. Here goes.

    attachicon.gif111 train 1.JPG

    Behind the loco, BZ BG,

    attachicon.gif111 train 2.JPG

two MK1 TSOs, nothing out of the ordinary there either.

    attachicon.gif111 train 3.JPG

    MK1 FK, OK still

    attachicon.gif111 train 4.JPG

Then a brake, should be a BSO, but I don't have a loose one yet, so the only cheat in the formation.

    attachicon.gif111train 5.JPG

now the odd bit, RF and FO.

    attachicon.gif111 train 6.JPG

and bringing up the rear, another BG.

So, we have an RF and FO sandwiched between two brake vehicles, and with an FK the other side of one of the brakes. Would first class passengers really be expected to pass through brake cars to get to and from the dining accomodation? Any ideas?

The Gresley RF reminds me of the one at Sheringham on the North Norfolk Railway.

Is there a kit anywhere for a Gresley BG? £40+ for the Hornby model seems a bit excessive.
