  1. Looks stunning, very similar to Iceland (but a lot greener), have you been, are they similar in character?

A hint if you are transferring photos to your phone to post, to get image sizes down I use Instagram, it can import any size of image, but sizes them to about 1000px and you can crop and alter basic settings too. Then it saves to your phone memory when you post them, so you can upload them here.

  2. The Canadian Government has a website with travel advice for the UK.

Included the following under "Mountain or Trekking Acivities"

"know the symptoms of acute altitude sickness, which can be fatal"

Actually there has been a recorded case of HAPE at around 1,000m so not impossible, but it is particularly amusing since there are towns in Canada higher than anything in the UK - Banff in Alberta is at 1,383m and has a population of over 6,000.

The Canadian Foreign Office do seem very cautious, I have been to two places where they Advise Against All Travel and found them very pleasant!

  3. If we are discussing (in good nature) plot inconsistencies, I always found it odd as a kid when The Doctor would joke with a frequent acquaintance (like The Brigadier) about times they teamed up to defeat a foe - then mention one that "has not happened for you yet", but it never seemed to occur the other way around.

Thinking about it makes me want to watch the first three Doctor's episodes again, I just love the old grainy film stock and black & white filming of the early series, they give such an inadvertently documentary-style quality to the episodes. The Spearhead From Space genuinely traumatised me as a child, was scared of mannequins for years!

  4. Given the Doctor's different internal systems and presumably DNA, would he even be able to sire a human child? I always just assumed that Hartnell's Doctor had formed a close bond with the girl's grandmother (a companion in earlier adventures?) and had assumed the name of grandfather as a politeness.

Was this ever covered by the show directly? I have not seen the earlier episodes for many years.

  5. I do worry that anyone who tries to legitimately criticise the actress for her performance or the writer for the storylines in the next series will risk being shot down by the PC brigade saying they are only criticising because it is a female lead.

Personally I think 'The Doctor' was best when played as a Grandfatherly role by Hartnell, Pertwee and Cushing (yes, my favourite forgotten Doctor), never really liked the younger actors on the role. I also much preferred the old 'serial' format, with four or five 30 minute episodes - let you get your teeth into a story.

  6. Loving the Jungfrau Railway photos by the way, certainly a dream trip to do some day (although I'd rather go up the outside!)

Okay, lets try this - its got two trains passing in an underground station - they enter and leave via tunnels so I think it is the best we are going to get.

Lets make it an easy one again this time - a sleeper train, anywhere in the world.

  7. Fascinating memories.

It leads to the endless argument of whether all stock should be in use at all times to maximise available seats on timetabled trains, or some should always be kept aside for relief like this.
