  1. What surprises me on Mike Walker’s comments above about the electrical alternative is that on commercial buildings magnetic door locking systems are normally a 12v Power Over Ethernet (I.e. over computer networking cable) affair and not particularly hungry in terms of ampage.
Surely a robust power supply up front and heavy duty connectors between carriage’s would be all that is required, or would it need a full certification program of some type?

Talking about the UK, if one wanted to keep their car untaxed and off the road for, say, a week because of financial issues, how practical is it to fill out a SORN and then rescind it, I bet the PNC won't be kept up to date, it really is a system that is more trouble than it's worth.

It's just a money making exercise to cover for the fact that aren't enough police patrols to catch anyone who uses a vehicle untaxed actually on the road.

    Mike.

Back in 2018 I had a car with damaged valves that needed the engine stripped and rebuilding. We decided to do it DIY over a few weekends (bought another vehicle and was then going to sell this one) and two weeks in the tax expired. Rang the DVLA and they advised to keep it off the road and not bother to declare SORN if only a couple of weeks.

6 weeks later a letter arrived stating tax it, SORN it or receive an automatic penalty.

Dont really understand the benefit of the tax anyway, just extend fuel duty another couple of pennies a litre…

Looks to be the ranting of someone on linkedIn (rather than anything formal) claiming max is a tax dodger for moving to Monaco, rather than paying a far higher rate in the Netherlands, whilst driving under the Dutch flag….

I am confident that the eBay Money Back Guarantee will cover all losses incurred by 'buyers' here [my estimate well over 1000 items at say £30 average].

These are a few questions arising from information in the public domain.

The Business Seller Information quoted in the eBay listings has Hobby Shop 22 Ltd [an entity] and a VAT number as GB 434307026. On checking the Gov.UK site this number is registered to Adam Cann [an individual].  So one piece of information is not consistent with the other.

eBay both could and should have carried out a proper check themselves.

Companies House Services has 2 entries for Adam David Cann as Director.

    1)  CANNS MODELS LTD (12195781)

    2)  HOBBY SHOP 22 LTD (14590684)

In each case the said individual is listed as having only 1 appointment, there should be a tie up and there is not.

In both cases the Companies and Directorships are listed as active

Canns Models is listed as having filed accounts only once [for a Dormant Company] in August 2021. Notice was given in August 2022 for Compulsory Strike-Off but this was suspended the following month. No further entries have been made.

Hobby Shop 22 is listed as Incorporated January 2023.  First accounts made up to 31 January 2024 are due by 13 October 2024.

I am not sure of the exact legal trading style adopted in each case but it may well be that he has traded generally as a Sole Trader which is what appears to be the case on eBay [except for the Business Name].

The single appointment thing is nothing unusual at companies house, even adding or removing a middle name or it’s initial can break the link….always remember that companies house remit is simply to record the data they are given, unless someone actively flags something to them.
They don’t have any obligations to check accuracy.

My last MOT cost £45 so we're into the territory of finding a nearby garage and leaving it there for a bit of work done.

Sounds like Oxford a while back, was £27 for a full days parking in a car park or as someone pointed out you could park on double yellows, and risk a £50 ticket that was reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days….

Forget the 73, what an amazing collection of cars from the early 80's Basingstoke I think!

Late Cortina, early Sierra, Rover P6?, some Renault thing, back corner of Sirocco, Marina, is that a Datsun behind the Renault, possibly Lada next to the Sierra......parking of the Renault is curious too!

Takes me back to late eighties/early nineties when my best mates dad made a good living patching up rust in a succession of all those models on their driveway ;)

  7. Just to explain a little further the pigments in the brush-on versions are often not as finely ground as the airbrush versions, hence the manufacturers not recommending them (or producing thinners in certain ranges).

Artists in the Mixed Media field do often have success with them in airbrushes with other brand thinners, but it depends on the colour and range, and is trial and error.

  8. I attended this show and have to say I felt the layout choices were less inspiring than last year. Each layout was very very good in its own right but there seems to be a focus on large space filling layouts, whereas last year had a better mix of small, medium and large.

I personally find this less inspiring as often the small layouts have a higher concentration of small details that draw the attention.

The show team were very welcoming and the venue is well chosen as accessible and clean/tidy with reasonable catering.

  9. Had someone pull out the end of a car park aisle in front of me without looking and absolutely oblivious to my presence this afternoon prompting an emergency stop….that will teach me to attend model railway exhibitions…

No - NR have a ramped solution which avoids the need to purchase land from the builders merchants (who are described as 'difficult to deal with' and would presumably need to be served with a CPO)

Is it just me that wonders how fair it is to describe them as “difficult to deal with”?

Given they are likely using every spare inch of space if our local merchants are anything to compare to and may have their own processes and risk assessments in place based on layout.

That is before you get into whether they own the land in the first place, or any rights held by (sub) landlords, finance companies etc etc…

Certainly on the last warehouse I managed the landlords wanted to do an external spruce up of the estate, and the architects presented some lovely plans. Once I pointed out they were proposing to make some small changes to our demised land boundaries, and we used the area for HGV manoeuvres that area of the plans were simply dumped in the too difficult to change box and never mentioned again…

Other than HSTs, the last widespread mainline slam-door stock was withdrawn in 2005 - so anyone under 18 will never have seen one, and anyone under 25ish won't have had to deal with one...

Almost 40 and ,HSTs excepted, never encountered one outside of preservation….

  12. Wasn’t there a rail tour that got into trouble a few years ago because the road tanker driver that refilled the tender thought it would helpful to pre-warm the water and then the crew couldn’t raise steam properly?

I think steaming is improved with a bigger temperature differential from tender to boiler but sure someone will explain it better…

I would be equally content to see parliament held in Didcot for the duration, with overnight accommodation provided in Oxford, but I think that might be harder to arrange, on both counts.

I think this might be the easier of the two, Didcot has no significant accommodation, nearest hotels** are three miles out on the A34 junction…..several village hall type buildings, or empty shops in the orchard centre, that could be used for meetings though…

**the district council did put together a proposal for a large development opposite the station including a large hotel a few years back, and none of the chains were prepared to sign up to run it….

  14. Also don’t forget the good residents of Appleford and Sutton Courtney and their none-stop campaigns against change….

Sutton Courtney have spent years campaigning against anything that might open up new employment sites in the local area despite the thousands of houses being added to Didcot.

Appleford as a village are currently campaigning against a new/wider road and improved cycle paths, including new Thames crossing that would link the A34 at Milton to the A415 and make access much better between Milton Park, Culham science park and onwards towards the Oxford Science park etc….their reason to protest is the height of the rail bridge needed over the quarry siding on the other side of the railway line, despite it removing hundreds of cars from their village, Sutton Courtney, Long Wittenham and Clifton Hampden and Culham, and taking a lot of traffic off two single lane bridges with the improvement to congestion.

I suspect trying to quadruple track between the two villages would be a good game for the planners….

5pm round here. But what's the problem? Unless you're posting first class (which usually means you're doing something late that you could have done earlier, so it's on you) or there are slugs in your post box, the time of the daily collection is irrelevant.

There are so many things that have to be delivered by post that decline cannot be terminal.

Previously I could receive something in the morning, deal with it and send a reply in the same days post for the next days arrival. Now the post has often been arriving at 7pm, and as late as 9pm** and collections are timed at 9am except for the central sorting office in town.

**admittedly over the last 4 weeks it has been back to around 11am

(When we bought a new house last year we had several first class letters from our solicitor take 5-6 days to travel 6 miles during the purchase process….)
