  1. “I love deadlines. I love the ‘whooshing’ slung they make as they fly by!” - Douglas Adams
  2. I just love the combination of precision engineering* with absolute whimsy. * More precise than I pretend to, at least.
  3. Ah, but does it explain the need, or the aftermath…?
  4. My workbench has yet to appear, but progress is being made on its future home:
  5. Whereas I thought, “He’s lost his brakevan“!
  6. That’ll be the one I mentioned on Tuesday…
  7. That’ll be under the long white clouds, then…
  8. Thanks: seems to be fitted stick, suggesting a decline in the need for brake vans… …although: Maybe not. Of course, the presence of what might be a mixture of brake types or possibly a PW/special load might have made this a specific exception that is testing (not breaking!) the general rule.
  9. In the case of the former, was that due to rust, or were they fitted examples only? Or more simply, was there a brake van?
  10. The only two built of (attributed) Barton Wright design. In fact, the saddle tank is an Aspinall re-build of the tender loco, and the tender loco is essentially a standard Kitson design, which also appeared on the Taff Vale Railway - and the preserved TVR O2 class 0-6-2T (also from Kitsons) is a dead ringer for the LYR class of the same configuration, so much so that it has appeared in LYR colours.
  11. I’ve asked you this before, I think, but I am being very specific about the locality as in my experience Scots are very generous, but are you absolutely certain there isn’t something if the “Fife miser” in your dna…?
  12. Along with the Aspinall 0-6-0 and 2-4-2T, and various “pugs”…
  13. I understand that quite often the instruction to repaint somewhere was frequently followed by a closure notice…
  14. If what makes him happy is running plausibly authentic stock, then he has himself to justify it to, if no one else. Also a useful mindset if the budget is limited. He can also run anything else when letting his hair down, of course.
  15. I have used a plastic grid for the base of my slowly evolving log cabin (which I don’t suggest you build if it is a rental property, as it’s potentially too long lasting, will cost more, and take you quite a few days to build on your own). The grids are really simple, but you do need to have a level and stable base on which to put it: I used 3 big bags of MoT aggregate (delivered by a lorry with a grab arm), but that’s for a bigger space. It’s a lot cheaper and quicker than concrete, and easier to remove should you relocate again. Some of these grids are bedded in with pea-gravel, some not. The only thing with a shed is to remember to keep the exterior in good nick. Preservative, preservative and more preservative….
  16. Given the location, and a junction off the LNWR central Wales line, then something small and LMS is quite justifiable.
  17. I don’t think I could simply get wagons of that quality out for looking, without desperately thinking of building at least a small shunting layout!
  18. I grew up in Northampton, where that theory was well-known long before Terry Pratchett’s grandparents were even born…
