  1. JOURNEY’S END

    THE GRAND FINALE

Well, after a bit more work, ie painting, detailing, adding “bits and bobs” etc., I’m now proud to present “Journey’s End” in it’s final finished form. Its taken a short (ish) while to complete, but I’m pleased with the final result, and below are some pictures of the completed model. A group of passengers can be see waiting for a local service DMU to arrive, while at the same time, one can also witness a busy scene in the goods yard, what with  goods & coal wagons waiting to be unloaded, and an 04 shunter about to remove a loaded van from the siding. The other two pictures show the DMU (or at least part of it) having arrived/the 04 and wagon departed, also a close-up of the BR workers removing the redundant track. All-in-all then I feel, quite a nice, compact little scene.

But now, a little sadly :( , and as they used to say at the end of those old cartoons many years ago, “that’s all folks”, for “Journey’s End” is my sixth and final CBC model, all I need to do now is build a shelf on which to keep/display this and my other CBC’s! But, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed :)  the CBC experience, something a little bit different from the norm, also of course a bit of a challenge, what working in a small space. I dare say I may attempt something similar in the future (possibly even a modular layout made up of sections 8” square?), meantime good luck to all entrants in the CBC, and may the best model win :victory: .

  2. Journey’s End is coming along nicely, as can be seen in the photos below. I’ve added/painted some buffer stops, while also I couldn’t resist adding some graffiti to the retaining wall (those graffiti artists seem to get everywhere!). But a major recent accomplishment had been the construction of the platform canopy, coal staithes and lineside hut (abandoned), all from a spare sheet of card from a Metcalfe kit. It was a bit of a task getting the canopy to line up more or less spot on, but I have to say that I’m happy with the result, now this and the hut and coal staithes are to be given “paint jobs”. I also need to add some more small details, i.e. a seat on the platform, some figures/passengers, BR workers shifting the redundant track, also some pallets or something similar will go on the loading dock, while a bit more weathering, scenicing etc. needs to be done. Still, this shouldn’t take too long, and I envisage the model being complete next week sometime, and I look forward to seeing it in it’s final, finished form.

  3. Yes, I'm sure that a few details ie figures etc. will round the model off nicely. And as for the "paint job" on the figures, it looks fine to me, this is a task I've often found tricky in the past, best way I find is just to take my time, while a very fine brush or sometimes a cocktail stick can also be very helpful! And re the matter of detail, again this looks fine, theres always a temptation to put in too much detail than may be actually required, so as watercolour painting is another of my pastimes, I tend to go by the watercolour rule re detail that "less is more" if you take my meaning - hope this all helps! :)

  4. Its been a short while since my last update, but in that time I’ve managed to make a bit more progress. I’ve added some more ballast roundabout the redundant track section at the rear, also some foliage along the top of the retaining wall. The top of the platform has also been given a "paint job", I felt that “tarmac”/black would look a bit bland, so settled for a compromise in the shape of various shades of grey, the rails have also been given appropriate treatment, ie a “murky”/dirty/dark brown colour, while the loading dock has also had it’s top surface added from card. Still a bit more work to do then, but I feel that the model is now beginning to look the part, and I envisage that it will be completed in a week or so's time. The next task will be to start work on the platform canopy, hut & coal staithes, should be fun/an interesting challenge of sorts, as these will all be scratch-built, another report then in due course.

  5. Journey’s End continues to progress, the platform has had it’s top surface (made from thick/thin card) added, while the loading dock is starting to take shape. I’ve also added some “greenery” on top of the retaining wall, while my least favourite task i.e. track ballasting has also now (thank goodness) been completed. The next immediate tasks will be to weather the track & ballast/paint the rails a “grimy” colour, finish off the loading dock, and paint the platform surface. Another update then in due course.

  6. Just to try and clarify matters a little, is it one cakebox model per entrant/modeller, or are we allowed to submit more than one if we so wish?

Its just that I'll have six cakebox models (once my current model "Journey's End" is completed), so if it is indeed one model/entrant, I may end up with a bit of a difficult decision as to which one to submit!

  7. I’ve added a bit more weathering to the retaining wall (I dare say it may also end up being “grafittiized”), painted the track sleepers in order to remove the glossy/”toylike” look, while work has also started on the platform. Also, the two “lumps” which can be seen behind the platform on the right hand side, will eventually represent gravel heaps, as the BR workers continue to uplift the redundant track. So still a bit more work to be done, but with the World Cup now about to reach it’s climax (a bit sad that England exited last Wednesday, that’s one less distraction, so its “full steam ahead”, pun intended!

  8. Off the top of my head, I'm not 100% sure re the signal box/phone also the crossing markings, maybe you could try google for more info? But re the matter of a figure, how about someone standing by the side of the cab (drivers side), after the wagon had stopped/the driver had summoned the person/figure in question over, in order to ask for directions to wherever he (the driver) was going?

  9. I had a feeling that "the visitor" would be a loco of some description in "transportation mode!" But its a good idea, I also like the road sign, and as a suggestion, might a figure or two also help add to the overall effect?

  10. @ Marly51 & 009 micro modeller

Thanks for the comments and feedback. Re the retaining wall, a bit more work to do on that yet, ie I've got to fill in one or two gaps here and there, paint the stone edge on the top, add a bit more weathering & some grafitti, then add some foliage/flock material. All good stuff/fun, I'll let you know how I get on sometime soon.

  11. Looks very realistic, I particularly like the crossing, and re the diagonal track, always a bit tricky, but I always find a mini-drill/cutting disk very useful for this particular task. Look forward to seeing the model develop further. :)
