  1. Doing some testing of NIR stock prior to the Bangor Show this weekend in recognition of their 50 yrs anniversary.  However the majority of the stock will be steam orientated from the NCC/UTA era.

If you are attending stop by the Killagan Layout and say hello.

    Kieran, everything is running smoothly.

I'll catch up with you tomorrow in Bangor. I'm coming in on the Belfast train and and will either walk or taxi to venue.

  2. Mick,  heres a couple of photos showing the cork laid, and today I'll get a chance to work on the track. At the moment its sitting without any fixing. I need to drill holes for my Gaugemaster point motors and droppers.

  3.

After many months of doubt and determination, Code 75 track and pointwork was temporarily placed on my baseboards and Omagh Goods Yard took its first breath. This time I used a well thought out plan that was simple and operational, with lots of advice and guidance from many.

Five sections, including a fiddle yard were all built from new with no expense spared. Brass pattern makers dowels were used on all sections for good alignment and quality sprung suitcases catches that hold all sections together. Leaving the possibility of exhibition possible, though not essential. None of the track you see is fixed so I am still open to suggestions.

The layout is goods only - focusing mainly on the Yard at Omagh and more interesting the movement of loose grain from wagons to the waiting grain lorries of Scotts Excelsior in town. A dropped section will allow for unloading loose grain from chutes on grain wagons to waiting lorries below and in latter years when wagons of bagged grain were unloaded onto Scotts flat bed lorries by hand. This has been verified by both employees of Scotts Mill and ex-GNRi shunters, still alive in Omagh today.

A scratchbuild turntable, will turn locomotives at one end of the layout and a small fiddle yard will allow for storage and operation when exhibiting. When the track work is finalised a 3mm cork bed will be glued in place. The replica cast-iron signs were made by a friend, who does this type of thing as a hobby. Don't they look really well!

  4. Has this layout been featured in Railway Modeller yet? If not, Kieran, I would make a point of submitting photographs to the magazine. This layout and its rolling stock will promote Irish railway modelling and would do much to encourage others to do the same.

  5. Apart from a couple of fillets being fixed to the top corners of the baseboards, would there be sufficient movement of locos and wagons on this if I were to have it 'end to end' (I'm not that keen on 'rally circuits'). There will be a turntable to the right end and fiddle yards to left end. If I keep it a fairly simple twin track with sidings I think its plenty.

  6. This week I am pleased to report that Omagh, with some 'modellers licence' is progressing in 00 gauge again. At the weekend I started building the supporting framework for the layout around the walls of the shed. On Monday I built the actual baseboards for my 9mm ply and tonight I am putting the finishing touches to the framework to give me shelving around the underside of the framework. By the weekend I will be able to complete all the supporting framework and start transferring my layout plans onto the plywood surface. Once this is complete I will be able to cut the ply with a jig saw, raise the trackbed to form the embankments and provide access over the road bridge. If all goes to plan I will have photos in due course.
