Annie - you should compile your images as an e-book! Great research and interpretations!

Then you can build a layout for this to sit in. I’d love to see that lake front expanded, the colours are spot on.
Think the layout would have to be two sided, if I was to model the Brünig line - one side as a lake shore view, the other on higher ground? -
Thank you, Edwardian! Now it’s time to catch up on your modelmaking, as well as some of my other favourites here on the Forum!

Thanks.
No, just dry-brushed with an old, misshapen brush.
Some lovely weathering, Stubby - weathering locomotives and wagons is next on my to-do list. I have given in and purchased one of these little Ruston’s - now I need to create a small shunting layout to do it justice!- 1

This is a great diorama Marly. I really like the way you've managed to blend with the backscene and the use of colour and black & white - very "Summer Holiday"
Hi Bill - when I was in primary school, in the early 1960s, we had the opportunity to travel on a TV train trip from Edinburgh to Glasgow, followed by a boat trip down the River Clyde to Dunoon. Much to our teacher’s disgust, Cliff Richard was singing ‘Summer Holiday’ as part of the TV transmission! -
Two from me: “Waverley” and “Lake Brienz”?

An interesting new topic, Kevin, and in N gauge?

Lovely cobble detail, Kevin! I also like that little special staithe kit. -
Lovely model, Dufus, and the internal details are a bonus! I think a few of us will keep adding to our models After the deadline!

Wow - what a fantastic collection of photographs, Paul! Many thanks for sharing!

Your photographs from your recent trip are wonderful and a great reference! I’d love a return trip to Switzerland, Paul! Maybe next year? -
I love your original concept, the little cameos and detailed modelling, Dickon, and agree with your choice to have the backdrop!

Joejab95 - love your initial drawings, the orange Sentinel will look great and an arc welder would certainly bring the model to life. Working for Balfour Beatty should put you in a good place for accessing reference images for your backscene?

Another fantastic model Marlyn, I think you will be hard to beat in this round of cakebox challenges.
You’re very kind Kevin and Richard, but the standard of modelmaking and the range of ideas is really great! Thanks also to everyone who encouraged me to keep going with this model, which was originally intended for the round ‘Waiting for the Train’! I get there in the end.“Good luck” to everyone this time round!!

Thanks PaulRhB, Kevin and Northroader for your kind comments! It was a challenge to work in 2mm scale, but very enjoyable and I am also learning more about Swiss railways at the same time!

Photos for challenge! I still have some more tweaking to do, but time was up!!

Marlyn what can I say, another stunning cakebox layout. The gaugemaster mat looks really good and sea looks so inviting. Well done brilliant modelling.
Hi Kevin, I bought the gravel and grass mats for my earlier ‘tin-plate’ cakebox and thought they worked fine in the smaller scale for this more ‘manicured’ landscape.- 1

Final images of the model. I stopped short of putting in more smaller items (such as extra luggage, porter with trolley, news headline boards, etc) as I felt the model was busy enough.

Back view of model before the backscene was fitted. I had to create two supporting piers for the dummy Dapol catenary masts.

Been very, very busy with lots of outdoor jobs and had to juggle modelling the two cakebox models in whatever spare time was left!
Some progress shots! Final shots of model to follow.
Baseboard scenery before varnishing the lake! The main surface areas were made from Gaugemaster ‘Gravel Mat’ and ‘Grass Mat’. The shoreline stones are a combination of gravel from my own garden paths and coarse ballast. A bit of weathering on the stones helps to bring out the details.
Before final painting and applying scenic materials, I like to give the whole base a light spray coat of grey, to see the different textures, without losing any of the small details.

We had such good weather during the last fortnight of September that outdoor maintenance jobs had to take priority and the only free evening time was spent trying to finish my two cakebox models for Round 3! No time for posting or browsing on the Forum
Here are some of the progress shots, will post the final ones later.
The planned model of the news stand now looks too big, with a very narrow corridor for the passenger queue, so a sharp scalpel blade was required!
I tried to make the John Lewis kiosk header as close, in style, to the original. Fonts have changed over the years - I only purchase additional fonts that I am likely to need on a regular basis. My local model shop, ‘The Sports and Model Shop‘ in Dingwall had this set of 1940s/1950s station staff, so thought I might use one or two on the model.
Before I secure the backscene - back view of the model, to prove I had some ballasted track there as well as couple buffer stops, made from paper!

This looks interesting, Richard. I like the different colours to differentiate the two locations. I have only used the papers for my buildings so far, but still to experiment using pastel crayons or chalk to weather or pigment the surface. Platform and road surfaces are always tricky for me, sometimes resorting to drying out garden soil and sifting the finest grains onto a painted road or yard surface, using a piece of nylon over a spice jar, as a shaker.

Because the layout is angled, I have decided that canopy girders wouldn’t work, without being supported at the sides of model. However I have ordered a set of columns from York Model Rail, similar to the Waverley ones, so I can position one in the foreground. In the photographs of the period, the columns have a tubular sleeve on which railway posters are pasted. I might try to recreate this as well?

You must have quite a collection of micros now, Kevin? I might try a small shelf diorama or Inglenook, once the Cake Box Challenge is over!

Scratch-built card and styrene structures (based on real buildings around London Bridge)

I’ve been modelling in paper and card mainly since returning to modelling, Grahame, but just found my old stock of miscellaneous Plastikard in the attic. Very inspired by your lovely work, so might have a go at a small project to compare a card model with a Plastikard version.
