  1. Noticed this morning that 142019 (DMSL) now has a 4"x 4" patch of original Chocolate on show where a sign has sat for many years, (checked many photos and it's always been there since it's first repaint) and they have just painted around it. Located in the middle of Local door control flap and Bowden cable flap.

  2. Looks dead close.., the broom ends more square..

Ahh, the good old days of DIY draft proofing by stuffing newspaper between the cab window and bulkhead. Cab heaters on full whack and it still freezing cold at anything over 50MPH.

For me the 144 was/is a step up. Good all round vision due to thin window pillars. Very good cab heaters both at the drivers and second mans side. Sealed bulkhead, so no draughts. But the 142 wins on the relaxed driving position.

Looking forward to the 142 and and the early version of the 144. Saving up already.

  3. Indeed they did 6 car Class 150\2 units running Scarborough to Holyhead and Liverpool was fun. Some units got up to a speedo indicated 85mph on some runs

Can remember it well. Me and my mate used to ride about on West Yorkshire Metro day rovers when we were kids. Sometimes we'd 'forget' to get off at Leeds and 'have' to go out of West Yorkshire through to York. We loved standing in the gangway peering in to an intermediate cab to see how fast we were going down Church Fenton bank and on to Colton Junction. Often about 80mph was shown which is only 5mph over the permitted speed, but to us boys, it was great because it was naughty! Of course there were no spy in the cabs (OTMR) back then or speed guns, so the only chance the driver would be caught would be if a Traction Inspector was back cabbing. Great times!

Interestingly, on the subject of 150's and speedo's, 150273 52 vehicle is odd, in having the only speedo dial on a 14x/15x with Northern, that goes up to 120mph. All others have 100mph.

  4. Hi there,

I spoke at length to one of the Steve’s at Bachmann at Ally Pally this year and made the point about demand for more 45’s. We’ll see what emerges I guess.

    Thanks

    Peter

Your post about speaking to Bachmann at Aly Paly had past me by at the time. Just read back now. Fingers crossed we get some action soon, if like you said they are aware of the gap in the market.

All this talk about flush front 45's inspired me to get mine out last night (A £6 body partnered up with a returned Chassis to Bachmann for £20 within a few minutes of each other at Warley years ago) with the assistance of my mate (who is a wizz with the soldering iron), we carried out a job I've been putting off for some time. The fitting of lights, courtesy of Jason Edmunds. What a difference it makes!

Very straightforward to fit. Would highly recommend it.

It completes my 45/0, as it is now weathered and has sound (Olivia's. My first ever sound chip from years ago). Very happy with it.

Wish I'd bought another £6 body but at the time I didn't realise how sought after a flush front peak would become. Just grateful I didn't have to pay £385 for mine!

  5. Original tooling does not include the centre door window, so this livery cannot be recreated in an accurate way currently.

Yes, I appreciate that but I could live with the full metal fly screen rather than the original clear Perspex one if it meant me getting a running man 150/2. They played a big part of the of the Northern scene in the 80's, and my layout is missing this important item. Fingers crossed for one in the near future.
  6. Thank you for that, it will be done! Destinations ??????

    Charlie

Good choice. Could we also have a provincial livery with just the 3 roof ribs (051-096) for a bit of variety? ( I know it would be slightly different tooling so would come at a different time to the 10 rib earlier ones).
  7. Inspired by this thread and others on improving the Lima Mk2b, I thought I’d share my Transpennine 2b TSO. Lima body on Bachmann chassis, body trimmed and door bumpers added as per suggestions on this site. Transfers, handrails and destination labels added too, plus painted interior. I think it’s a big improvement but ideally still needs the paint mould line removing and a full respray; perhaps one for the future. Flush glazing is South Eastern, so not the best, but better than the Lima glazing. Looks good in an otherwise Bachmann rake of blue and grey/model rail transpennine special editions.

Very nice job mate.Shows what you can do with a bit of work.

  8. Slowly getting there. What liveries do you fancy: Kernow likes Skippers, Hattons like Merseyrail ?????

I'd imagine West Country Skipper livery would be the more popular. Cornish China clay layouts etc etc.

Original provincial Blue and GMPTE Orange/Brown are top of my list, but a Chocolate and Cream Skipper could also work for me, as they did migrate North from Devon/Cornwall fairly early on in thier lives after their short but unsuccessful stint down Southwest.

  9. I've just lined up my oxford 9 coach rake of intercity livery mk3 coaches. My initial impressions are:

    +

-close up the model is good due to the details.

-well made and have a nice feel and weight.

    -

-viewing from afar they are less convincing because of the lack of silver rim windows and the roof

    ridging.

    - alongside my Bachmann 47 intercity 'titan' the colours are ckearly wrong which doesn't bide well when it's matched up to the new 87 and 90.

Overall, for me, they are good coaches but the sad thing is the mistakes have been made on the important things; the livery, the silver window rims and to an extent the roof ridging (although it may well be diametrically correct for the model) which doesn't come across. Those mistakes have been made on the aspects of the coach which define it- the things which make the intercity mark 3s look like the real thing. When I line up my rakes of Bachmann mark 1 and 2s, they look correct close up and from afar. Oxford weren't that far off I don't think from making a good model;frustratingly though it seems they decided not to do any quality control on the finished product/run it past some experts.

Anyhow, I'm going to put them away and set out my Bachmann mark 1 intercity rake to make me feel a bit better. I just hope and pray they can sort the blue/grey inter city ones out as the mark 3s are my favourite ever coaches.

From what I saw at Glasgow, the Blue and Grey MK 3's look very nice indeed.

  10. Is the class 142 still going ahead?,it’s been quiet on here since March.

Yes, the 142 project is still going ahead. See Charlie's comments on the Class 143 First Great Western thread a couple of days ago.

  11. We can only spend £130K once, the current 156 is next with the profit from that covering the 142. After the 142 we have another 156 then a 144/143.

    66738

Plus we have some stuff we are not telling you about!!!!!!!!!!! Charlie

Very intriguing! As well as this/these mystery new project(s), (hoping for a 141 rail bus!), the 144 mention has me hoping for an early representation of the unit in WYPTE Red and Cream. The 142 should be able to provide the correct interior, (3+2 bus seats).
  12. Would love Bachmann to do another flush front 45, and in particular a 45/1. Headlight would be very nice but without would also be ok. I was one of the lucky few to get a Modelzone faulty 45048 body from Warley some years ago. £5 or £6 if memory serves me right. Not sure what was wrong with them. Looks alright to me.

There has got the be a reason why Bachmann have not independently produced one. Tooling issue or Modelzone owning the rights to the tooling are probably the reasons. It's a shame as they'd sell very well in my opinion.

  13. Really nice! Real work horse livery. Very tempted. Well done Kernow.

At the same time, I'm a little disappointed. I allow myself to get excited when these announcements come. Maybe this is the moment I get my 45/1 (flush front) or my 31/4 in blue. But no. The wait continues.

As a side note, as much as I love all these 47's coming on the market, they are all flip up glass markers at one end and opaque discs the other. I'd like to see a new tooling of both ends with flip up glass lenses, or both opaque. Flush front one end and original inset the other. Loads of combinations to go at, but I know new tooling cost money, and different cab ends are still some way off.

  14. There is a short peice in Rail Express this month on the ScotRail Mk3a coaches being on their way. There is a statement "Oxford is currently set to persist with its own colours rather than colour match to Bachmann's Class 47/7 and upcoming Mk.2f DBSO".

Well, that is a load of sales from me that are now confirmed as being lost from me. Why did Oxford makes such a short-sighted and, quite frankly, ludicrous decision? The mind boggles...

    Roy

So frustrating isn't it? They had an open goal in front of them and it seems they have some how spectacularly missed from 6 yards.

Aghhhh! (Banging head against brick wall)

  15. I'm sure you're more than aware of https://www.derbysulzers.com/Pic.html as a resource on these locomotives. Great potted history of most of the class with photos of most if not all individuals throughout their lives. As far as liveries and numbers, I would have thought the best options for the banger blue rats would be those which lasted to the end in '87, and/or those which survived to preservation.

Yes please! Something like 313 with ploughs. One of the last to be active, and survives today in preservation.

  16. That could incur additional costs.. maybe the paint was right, but faded on the plastic or reacted to the back colour ?

    We don’t know.

But it could add delays, extra samples, costs, who knows maybe even wasted batches of paint.

Either way it’s done and there here, by all accounts selling well and for the first time in ages we’re seeing modellers buying them and putting knives to them.. unlike other £60-£125 coaches we have out there.

I stil, say when there gone,.. there gone. I doubt the next batch of Intercity mk3’s In swallow livery will be available sub £30 and could be a very long wait.. it’s taken 7 month to get a rake of seven IC swallows done, with Scotrail/BlueGrey and DRS to come that’s at least 2020 at current speed.

That’s assuming they don’t chose One, Anglia,Virgin,ICExec, IC named Pullmans, NR Yellow or even that one off in NSE livery first... could be 2023..

Bird in the hand, Gift horse.. and all that...

Was that one off in NSE actually Mk 2D FK 13575?

  17. As with most factory weathered stock I purchase, I have removed some of the weathering, and hopefully, added a subtle bit more.

I have also added the 2 white dots to the front end, which the loco gained during 1986 and the remains of silver on the buffer edges- does anyone know why the white dots were applied? Did the loco work a VSOE or something special? Ive also done the paint chip above the secondmans windscreen!

    http://www.hondawanderer.com/47625_Ascott-under-Wychwood_1986.htm

Just waiting for a chip to arrive from Charlie, to put some fire in its belly.

I've wondered what the white dots were for, when doing a bit of research to see if it fitted in my era.

How easy does the weathering come off? What method used?

I've scrawled 'Graffiti/writing with finger in dirt' on a weathered GUV. Using a wooden tooth pick. Looks good. Fresh pristine paint is clearly on show under the muck, but don't know how easy it would be to get most of it off on a loco.
