  1. Hi Monte

Whilst you will no doubt get flooded with information and well-meaning recommendations here, I would seriously recommend that you and / or your friend visit either a retailer selling DCC systems or a model railway club that has a DCC layout. I appreciate that there may not be many of these close to your location!

At either of these you will get the opportunity to see and 'play' with DCC and 'learn' the system first hand. I remember when I first started experimenting with DCC, I read dozens of articles and informative web sites but it was only when I visited a local club and got a 'hands on' introduction to how it works and to it's capabilities did I start to more fully understand what it was capable of. This was a few years back and DCC is still advancing and I'm still learning!!

Again - thanks for this information, Paul.

I wonder if 'micknich2003' happened to be on duty that weekend? The ECS and loco moves to cope with those additional services must have taken some planning and execution. Presumably the stock used was from the ECML services that were spare at the weekend but I guess they would still need to be moved to Hull and then berthed in the short term prior to being moved into Paragon for the Saturday morning. And then it would all need repeating again in the evening after the return of all the services from London!

Looking at the picture again, It doesn't look as if there is any capacity at Paragon to cope with the regular more local services, even though it was a Saturday!

  3. Hi.

Just taken delivery of a sound fitted Class 37 and was wondering how to identify the sound file so that I can hopefully acquire a Function List!

JMRI tells me that the decoder is an ESU SELECT (LSS printed on the decoder) but my knowledge and experience of JMRI prevents me from getting any further! (The vendor thinks the sound file supplier MAY be South West Digital.)

Any thoughts / assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Back in my 'yoof', I was an early member of the NYMR in the days when Mirvale and one coach could be seen struggling up to Goathland Summit. I then remember No 5 and No. 29 arriving and I've had a soft spot for No. 5 ever since.

Having raised a query on here about the availability of this loco in 00 gauge form back in 2012, I was approached just before Christmas last year by 'Paul _sterling' of this parish. Paul uses 3D printing to produce bodies of No 5 and his offer includes using some of the cost he charges to support the rebuild No. 5 on the NYMR.

So I thought that as Christmas was coming up and the pressy list was looking a little 'short' this year, we'd have a go!

I have to admit that my modelling skills are nowhere near the level needed for a project like this,  so having placed an order with Paul, I then set about finding a donor chassis. These come in the shape a Bachmann 32-079 56xx 0-6-2T and I passed this on so that Paul could adapt the chassis to fit.

Having completed the body and chassis works, the loco then arrived with me for the application of decals and fitting of a sound decoder and speaker.

The decals I acquired look slightly oversized to me, but as I said earlier my modelling skills are not up with the best and at least I'm satisfied with how it looks.

I hard-wired a YouChoos supplied ZImo MS500R in the boiler barrel with a sugarcube speaker in the coal bunker - the YouChoos sound file being for a GWR Class 5600 Taffy Tank. Now before anyone jumps up and down, I think I'm right in saying that the loco was built by Robert Stephenson in Darlington to the same pattern as the Class 5600s they built and therefore as I'm not aware of any No. 5 sound projects I guess this is probably as close as I'm going to get. I'm told that the only thing that doesn't match in the sound file is the whistle!!

Anyway, if you'd like to see it I'll attach a couple of photos and the link to a short video - I hope you enjoy them and if No.5 takes your fancy, then please do get in touch with 'Paul_sterling' and know that if you buy from him, you'll also be supporting No.5 on the NYMR. (I am aware that some attention is needed to the boiler handrail!!)

It’s all to so with the timings, I did actually looked into it as it’s a regular occurrence and I like to see if things can be made more efficient both time and cost wise given the tight timings on this job the move even happened the same years ago when I was with colas

Heading from bescot nothing follows us from aynho jn to Risborough but there are still trains running out of london to Aylesbury at that time of night both passenger and empty stock as well as one from Bicester to Aylesbury rhat we wait for at Bicester chord jn, so we have to go south to give them time to get onto the single line across to Aylesbury as if we stood in the platform we would block the route and if we changed ends at either wycombe or Gerrards we would do the same there too

there isn’t much of a window to do work on the branch, the last passenger over it east bound is about 01:15 and the first one back west bound is about 05:15 so just a 4 hour gap to work

when we leave the possession the first passenger train is pretty much running behind us so again if we sat in the platform that can’t get into risborough and even then if we did change ends and head north there are a couple of ECS trains that do Aylesbury to Bicester or banbury that we would block or delay if we left there out of sync

I did have it a few years back where I noticed RTT showed us entering the single line before the last passenger service so I rang the box to let them know beforehand be be sure they regulated us correctly!

it probably won’t be running tonight as we managed to drop all the required rail last night, as I say the possession timings are tight so they planned it to run over two nights incase if any delays taking the possession or unloading but we dropped the lot with about 20 mins to spare so I’m now having a day off tonight/tomorrow as it’s been a long week already!

    Thanks Jim.

I can now see why there is a need for such a seemingly long diversion. At first look it seems very wasteful but slotting in with all of the passenger ECS movements and with such a short time available on the branch, it all becomes clear.

Still, it made for a long day for you - I'm sure that the day off today / tomorrow is welcome!

Long job last night bescot to princes Risborough for a rail drop

    Hi Jim

I guess there must be a logical reason for having to go all the way from P. Risborough to South Ruislip in order to reverse / crossover, but couldn't this be done at either H. Wycombe or Gerrards Cross or any other crossover point?

By the way, thanks for the constant flow of information / pics.

The service is actually a Hull-Sheffield-Brighton not a Gatwick. It was the return working of the Paddington-Hull service, which split at Sheffield  with the rear portion going to Leeds. These portions reunited at Sheffield with the Leeds section now at the front, the loco off the Hull portion remains at Sheffield. As to locos the Paddington engine came off at New Street, with a loco fresh off Saltley going forward, A 31 would work the Leeds section forward and then work through to New Street , where another loco fresh off Saltley would work to the South coast.

    Al Taylor

    Thanks Al.

I had remembered the Paddington / Brighton trains - it was the Gatwick bit that threw me!

Still a really odd overall working though - does anyone know if there was a Brighton to Paddington balancing working? Or am I asking too much here??!?

Good evening, everyone. Well, this evening we return to Hull to see a Peak departing on the 13.32 train to Gatwick. The locomotive is 45138, and the date is the 2nd March, 1985. The photo’ is courtesy of the KDH archive on Flickr.

    Best regards,

     Rob.

    Hi

    A couple questions please:

    1. I guess there may not be an answer but how did a Hull -Gatwick service come about & presumably a return service?

    2. This pic would seem to show a Class 4 on a 5 maybe 6 coach train. Did this service have another portion join somewhere to better justify the front end power?

There seems to be a trend of folks jumping in on this topic to complain about the ads without making any effort to read what has gone before. I have seen this on support topics for mobile phone apps too - just a constant barrage of "its broke - fix it" no matter how much the designers or other contributors try to say "yes we know, it's being fixed, wait"

I suppose working in Software development support for 8 years I have more of an insight into what has to go into a "fix" to make sure it does not right royally mess things up more ...........

Couldn't agree more, Ian! Andy must be 'up to his ears' in it at the moment - we should just let him get on with it!

  10. My turn now! Win 10 Edge.

    - constant adverts that knock the content I wish to see up the screen and out of view. I quite understand the need for the ads to pay for the site and I have no issue with ads being displayed, but for them to reposition the view each time I look up a new page / topic, then it becomes a nuisance. Whilst I know I can pay to have these taken away, i don't see why a non-paying subscriber should have to keep readjusting the page in order to see the content that they wish to.
