  1. Our newest release is the culmination of a long-term project: a complete 'starter set' in broad gauge! Along with track and rolling stock our first 7-foot (and a quarter inch) gauge locomotive is now available: the iconic North Star. Take a look at it in action: https://www.shapeways.com/product/AG9RNTSWD/north-star-broad-gauge-locomotive-n-scale https://www.shapeways.com/product/2L97R8EJX/north-star-broad-gauge-tender-n-scale
  2. The first of several models in development is progressing well - the N Gauge Beyer-Ljungstrom Turbine Locomotive. Some fine-tuning is being made to the boiler section prior to release, but the turbine/condenser section shows the detail being included. Designed as a relatively simple model to build, development research conversely was no easy task!
  3. New release: easily fill coaches and crowd scenes with these simple Victorian figures in period costume from the 1840-60s. Available standing or seated, six different costumes (three male, three female) and a variety of different poses mean each of the 48 figure is different. Once painted in contemporary colours they should help quickly populate any Era I layout. https://www.shapeways.com/product/MAMC9JKXK/n-gauge-victorian-passengers-standing https://www.shapeways.com/product/KSSYA66NV/n-gauge-victorian-passengers-seated
  4. Surprised to find my paper here but thanks for sharing - glad you enjoyed it. It certainly raised eyebrows at its first academic conference (though by the end everyone was won over)...!
  5. Newman Miniatures is pleased to announce a new foray into 009 scale narrow gauge models with a series of models not previously available in this scale. The news is genuine, the models real, but the prototype is the joke: freelance rolling stock inspired by the delightful cartoons of Roland Emett. Here we have ‘Ethel’ (an express 0-2-0 tender engine), ‘Gladys’ (an 0-4-0 mixed traffic engine), ‘Felicity’ (an 0-4-0 tank engine) and a matching coach. All simple to build, each engine is fully motorised and will offer something truly different to a layout! https://www.shapeways.com/product/UFN7BVKS6/far-twittering-locomotive-ethel https://www.shapeways.com/product/LNTC8V7E5/far-twittering-locomotive-felicity https://www.shapeways.com/product/2P6ZFVWNG/far-twittering-locomotive-gladys https://www.shapeways.com/product/ZQLT7RAAX/far-twittering-gladys-tender https://www.shapeways.com/product/PYDA4526W/far-twittering-coach
  6. Strictly speaking Northumbrian had very different frames, firebox and tender so it might be easier to use the Northumbrian 3D kit. Nice idea though anyway.
  7. Several new projects are currently underway but more importantly with the current international situation, everyone stay safe.
  8. 'Leader' is now also available as a scratch aid in 00. Several new and unusual projects are currently underway, and at least one can genuinely be considered new ground for commercial rail modelling...
  9. The next 'experimental' due for release, and something for LMS fans - the 1926-8 Beyer-Ljungstrom turbine locomotive. This is far and away the most complex prototype attempted to date, but developed so all the difficulty is taken out of assembly. Even in N Gauge this is a big engine!
  10. Thanks for sharing - glad you're pleased and that really looks good in blue!
  11. Thanks - this has been much more complicated than my usual N-Gauger but hopefully will convey the original's cluttered appearance. As for said prototype, it is this delightful monster, the Beyer-Ljungstrom Turbine Locomotive: http://www.douglas-self.com/MUSEUM/LOCOLOCO/ljung/ljungstr.htm
  12. One day I will model a well-documented, easy box-like prototype with no complicated shapes whatsoever. Today is not that day...
  13. Courtesy of @PaulRhB, a lovely photo of the new L&MR 2nd Class coach. Currently working on a commission and a new experimental engine, so will have much to share in the near future...
  14. Yes my designs are deliberately intended to mirror the rest of the set by following the 1930s replicas. The irony is that none of these are right for the original engine/stock - there are subtle differences with Rocket (which rarely hauled passenger trains anyway), 3rd Class only came to the LMR c.1844 so I am reliably informed and they never had standing-only coaches. Apparently the replicas are based on 1920s plans (no period ones existing) based on photographs of a model that was built based on recollection... As a result even the 1st Class coaches (both replica and model) are largely incorrect!
  15. Glad you're pleased with the model & thanks for posting. Would you mind my sharing your photo? I look forward to seeing it all painted up.
  16. They were a necessary evil alas between the minimum thickness needed for 3D-printed plastic and the need to clear the axles. As with all my models, particularly in 00, they are intended foremost as scratch aids for modelmakers to modify or improve as they see fit. The small size of the models also means the CAD image cruelly enlarges any issues, much like enlarging photographs. Thanks for the compliment on the bodywork though.
  17. A few more photos now it is out of the box (please ignore the N Gauge structures in the background!) and a quick comparison with the original 1960s version. As an aside, 2nd and 3rd class coaches to suit this set are now available via my site at Newman Miniatures. Rather than spamming here, details can be found on my thread or through the web address in my sig below.
  18. With the release of the new Hornby Rocket, there has been discussion about supplementary coaches, particularly Second and Third Class. Revisiting my earlier designs, these have now been reworked with built-in chassis to provide new scale models suitable for use with both the Hornby Rocket and with other items in the Newman Miniatures range. Most details are provided, including buffer heads (on a sprue under the floor), and provision has also been made for the Hornby three-link couplings with pre-drilled holes for suitable brackets. All that needs to be added consequently are wheels, couplings and steps to make a convincing scale model. https://www.shapeways.com/product/X2KQ5V9AX/00-scale-liverpool-manchester-railway-1st-coach https://www.shapeways.com/product/2SXCZ6EXZ/00-scale-liverpool-manchester-railway-2nd-coach https://www.shapeways.com/product/UMAW4DZ66/00-scale-liverpool-manchester-railway-3rd-coach
  19. As some initial thoughts: Removing it from the box surround was a bit tight in places, though this could be as it was literally the first time. Similarly some of the coach wheels had been pushed out of their bearings. The couplings look great, but are very fiddly! There are six in the pack which should allow for expansion (I'll be modifying my 3D-print 2nd & 3rd coaches asap), though I noticed one coupling was smaller than the others - for the tender-coach coupling I presume. The barrel gap will not reduce on my example as some flashing is in the way on the edge. I might look to altering this later, but for the price I'm hesitant to take a file to it this soon! The figures are designed to clip in place - good for anyone not keen on gluing. White on the inside of the chimney is a bit of a shame. While the gearing means the lower eccentrics/etc are unfeasible, there are at least two support braces missing under the footplate - rather noticeable when looking at track level. Running it on just a few feet of track with a 9v battery (I'm an N-Gauger usually), it goes well though very clean track is a necessity. With this rudimentary power source there was some initial wheel slipping - this not only to be expected but is a common issue on the replica. So yes niggles (some slightly pedantic), but overall an impressive model.
  20. Will find out in a moment!
  21. Example coach (can't upload all three for some reason). The names are definitively: Times Experience Despatch
  22. Just some quick photos for reference as mine arrived this morning.
  23. Just received this: images of the most recent commission, S&DR 'Derwent' in O Gauge. A fair bit larger than N gauge!
  24. If it is of interest, I could always look to super-detailing my 00 open 2nd and 3rd class coaches to go with this set for anyone who wants, including appropriate couplings to suit. The current coaches, plus a variety of L&MR engines can be found at https://www.shapeways.com/shops/newman-miniatures
