Shhh, don't give the game away. So far the UPCS* hasn't heard about the latest AA defences.

It seems that TNMs are heavily in to recycling, which in my opinion comes into George Orwell's 'good thing' category. A few years ago I dismantled a dead CD player and so far the motor unit has been incorporated into a friend's model railway turntable, the steel sheet carcase has to date provided the material for two sets of locomotive frames, the acrylic sheet over the front display panel has produced window glazing for several buildings, and the on/off switch is part of a layout control panel.

Chin up, HH, you may, like us, soon return to normality at the Muddy Hollow. The last of our visitors depart today but unlike the exhortations of the country code, as well as footprints they are leaving behind a trail of near devastation (or so it appears to my jaundiced morning eye). How STPs cause so much chaos in such a short time is a source of mystery. The likelihood of any modelling time in the near future is unfortunately akin to the longevity of snowballs in the Sahara or cake in the vicinity of bears and hippos.
A little bird from another thread tells me that our exiled correspondent from the Charente and his good lady celebrate 42 years of wedded bliss today so congrats to Jamie.
TTFN people.

Today sees the departure of the last of our visitors when No. 2 son, DiL and granddaughter go back to deepest Surrey so daily orders mainly consist of cleaning and tidying plus I still have to put the tomato plants in grow bags so not a day that has strong appeal.
I think that the roadways planning department personnel hereabouts studied at the same institute of idiocy as those in Andy Sharpe's neck of the woods as currently it is impossible to get in or out of town without negotiating at least one set of roadworks. I wouldn't mind so much if they left the roads in an improved state but that is emphatically not the case. To quote the Baz - Pah!
Many congratulations to Jamie and Beth on their anniversary and wishes for many more.
Have a good day everyone, keep your guard up and stay safe.

A jolly fine time was had at Attingham Park although there was no sign of the Muddy Hollow gang. I had a nice chat with Coastalview, who recognised me straight away by the row of medals I wore in recognition of leading the successful hippo wrangling expedition on the Limpopo in '98 with my old mucker Major Dennis Bloodnock.
Have a good night/day/somewhere in between depending on which part of the globe you currently inhabit.

One good bit of graffiti was added to a notice in a maternity ward stating, " Please be quiet, the first few minutes of life are critical." Underneath someone had written, "The last few minutes are fairly dodgy too."

The great family get together went well and was enjoyable albeit tiring. No. 1 son and tribe went back to Derbyshire last night whilst No. 2 and DiL went off to an undisclosed location to celebrate their anniversary leaving us with granddaughter Leila. We are now left to sort out the resulting mess and to try to turn the house and garden, plus Dad's house where the No. 1s were sleeping, back to habitable standards. First of all, though, is a visit with granddaughter to Attingham Park.
Have a a good day one and all.

OK, I'll bring it with me when I land my Sopwith Camel in front of the mansion (after having strafed the HH party).

Yesterday's BBQ went well but has left me exhausted. No. 2 son and DiL leave today for an undisclosed destination to celebrate their 20th anniversary, leaving granddaughter with us while No. 1 son and tribe, who are staying in Dad's house overnight, go back to Derbyshire this evening. Then tomorrow Jill, granddaughter and I meet up with No.2 son and DiL at Attingham Park before they come back here until Wednesday when normal service resumes. It's delightful to see them all after such a long hiatus but I'm afraid that my stamina isn't what it used to be. Unfortunately I don't have HH's option of a retreat to the workshop as such a thing has been specifically banned in routine orders.
Our next social event isn't until the end of next month when we are supposed to be going to London for a reunion lunch at the RAF Club, providing, of course, that the government's road map doesn't run into road closures. We shall see.
And now back to the fray with the small pink terrorists. Wish me luck.

I will reiterate that if you had flown with the pilots I have, (including some from Crab Air) being able getting out of the aircraft at the earliest opportunity and not have to endure the sometimes almost controlled crash at the end of the flight is merciful release.
You've flown with some of the good ones then!

A work colleague of mine used to say that anyone who washes the car without being instructed to do so by a higher authority, AKA SWMBO, is right up there, in his opinion, with those who jump out of fully serviceable aeroplanes without a really pressing reason.

I've obviously either woken up in some other dimension or been transported to a far-off place as by my reckoning it is a ban cauli day weekend but the sun is shining and it's warm with just a gentle breeze! As luck would have it we are indulging in the first family get-together complete with BBQ for well over a year so my amazement is unlimited. Added to that, I managed to fool the bear and hippo gang with dummy cardboard cakes so grandad's chocolate cake is safe and well and waiting to be consumed this afternoon by the
marauding hordegrandchildren. Prior to that, Jill has promised them that Grandad will show them his trains running so I'll even get to spend some time in the shed.Have a good day everyone.

Good morning from a sunny, warm North Salopshire. Today we have the whole family together for the first time since March 2020 and will be having a BBQ after Jill has taken No. 1 inheritor of the overdraft to see Dad. Fortunately the nursing home will now accept the results of home Covid tests done the same day as clearance to visit rather than having to have one at their premises so that will save time and the tests are being done as I write. For my part, I am chief cook and bottle washer and have already made one of grandad's chocolate cakes, which the children adore, and spent much of yesterday afternoon making burgers, which we regard as much better than bought ones, and am currently part way through manufacturing potato salad. Then it's time to make marinade for the chicken and a mustard glaze for the sausages, which are particularly good ones made at a local organic farm, plus a green salad and we're all done until lighting up time, when I become head (I.e., only) chef. The upside of all this is that once I've done all the preparation and cooking, which I really don't mind, what I regard as the yucky part of clearing up, washing up and tidying up is done by others while I sit back in the evening sun with a glass of some tasty happy juice and once in a while a small cigar pretending to be Horace Rumpole.
Although it would be nice to have Dad with us, at least I am a bit more sanguine now about his medium term future and that helps with my overall frame of mind.
All in all, a good day in prospect and I hope that other ERs can enjoy it too.
With the very best of wishes to everyone out there.

Forgot to add last time that since the grandkids are coming there has been a grand baking session of Grandad's chocolate cake so ground and air defences have been set up to guard against raids by bears and hippos. Details are, of course, highly secret but include state of the art traps and deterrents along the lines of those developed by our Swiss correspondent.

Yesterday Jill and I visited Dad for the first time in over two weeks due to the nursing home he is in imposing a fourteen day quarantine when he was transferred there. It was a bit of a marathon as the traffic was horrendous so a 25 mile journey took over an hour and a half then we had to have a Covid test and wait for the results before being allowed in, hence a one hour visit occupied Getting on for five hours. However, it was worth it as Dad was very pleased to see us and we were able to take some things in for him as well as getting his laptop sorted out so he is now better able to keep in touch with friends. Even so, he is getting fed up being isolated in his room but that in itself is proving to be a spur for him to concentrate on the physiotherapy so that eventually he can get home. At least his attitude to the physiotherapy is now a lot more positive and even though it makes him very tired he seems to be working at it and improving quite a bit. Our sons will be arriving later today for the weekend so Jill will be taking them to see Dad and that should help cheer him up.
The unusual situation of a bank holiday Sunday promising to be fine has resulted in us planning a BBQ for the family tomorrow so I'll shortly be venturing out for a shopping spree before commencing a manufacturing session tomorrow morning involving hamburgers, potato salad and other goodies. It's been so long since such a thing has been attempted that we are having to undertake a detailed planning session so that the essentials don't get missed.
Have a good weekend folks.

We visited Dad yesterday for the first time in two weeks due to the nursing home having put him in quarantine when he arrived there. It's a nice place, as such establishments go, but he is getting somewhat stir crazy being in a room by himself 24/7 with only the staff coming in as company. Hence he was really pleased to see us but the traffic was horrendous, added to which we had to have a Covid test before being allowed in to see him so a one hour visit took a total of over four hours. Hence I can't see us visiting every day but our two sons will be here for the holiday starting later today so Jill is going to take them to see him tomorrow, which should chuff him. The good news is that he seems to have got some determination about his physiotherapy and they are pleased with his progress but it is tiring him out and there is still a way to go.

You need a brass magnet!
I have one in my workshop. It's called paint. Every time I paint something, even if I clean up first, assiduously make sure the model is devoid of all contamination and take all sorts of other precautions there are generally some particles that find their way onto the freshly painted surface. Mind you, I hate painting at the best of times and if I announce that I'm going to be spraying a model, Jill tries to make sure she's out. It's not unknown for me to strip and repaint a model twice. My greatest disaster was when I had sprayed a tender and as was my usual practice had put it in the oven at a very low temperature of about 70 degrees for a couple of hours (enamel paint). Unfortunately the oven thermostat failed and two hours later I found an intensely hot oven containing a kit of parts with a firmly baked on dark brown glaze lying on the shelf, so goodness knows what temperature it had reached. I think that my sons learned some funny words from Dad that day. That was one of those occasions when the thought of taking up stamp collecting came to mind.

One thing you shouldn't be short of, Douglas, is adhesion weight - all that brass plate must weigh quite a bit. Is the boiler silver soldered together or just soft soldered? I'm not an expert on pot boilered models by any stretch of the imagination but I thought that boilers were generally silver soldered? However, the experts such as HH will have a much better idea than I have. I admire your determination to saw thick brass like that as having to do that is something I really dislike.

EU membership doesn't have anything to do with it. It's run by the European Broadcasting Union, whose membership is geographically diverse and by no means limited to Europe. Are any of your local broadcasters members of that organisation?
I did think it a bit bit odd that Israel was involved but was never interested enough to find out why. Wasn't it Israel that once fielded a woman with a beard?
