But you would you really have been trying to eat an LDC that was older than you are?
I would imagine that in Bear's vicinity the chances of LDC reaching a greater age than the average Mayfly are about zilch.

During one of my spells in the Falklands in the '90s There was a Ghurka company in residence. The first evening of my stay I went to the gym for a spot of exercice biking and watched in amazement as two Ghurkas did single arm chin ups on the high bars whilst casually chatting to each other. A few evenings later I was chatting to one of their officers and asked what they were doing the following day. He said that it hadn't been fully decided at that stage but they were going to start after breakfast by taking them to Goose Green, which is about 30 k over very rough ground, then getting them to run back . "That'll take most of the day surely," I suggested. "Shouldn't think so," he said, "They'll want to be back for lunch."

Some footage taken under the LOHR that may be of interest follows that showing workers on the India building in the 1930s here.

My thought on Douglas' dilemma is that if HH's viewpoint is valid, I.e., the historical aspect wins and therefore the Mogul should be left alone and running it effectively forgotten, then attempting to rescue it as a going concern is worthwhile because if at the end of the day the attempt fails nothing is really lost - it simply becomes a non-working museum piece. Therefore I would advocate a rescue attempt along the lines of procedures suggested by PB and HH, being careful not to damage the external appearance of the model. If it works, all well and good and Douglas has won; if not he and his Dad still have the model in no worse a state operationally than before.

I particularly like the condenser - looks as though an octopus has invaded it.
Good luck with the Mogul Douglas.

Just had a phone call to say that Dad is being transferred to........ Ludlow. As Baz would put it, Pah! The caller, who was the ward manager, said that it was in Dad's best interests to get him to a rehabilitation unit ASAP so that he can avoid the inherent problems caused by being in bed all day and get the physiotherapy he needs. As there are no beds at Whitchurch for at least a week he has to go to Ludlow but the staff there have been asked to keep checking on bed availability at Whitchurch with a view to transferring him when possible. We shall see...
Took the car to the local garage this morning to see why the christmas tree keeps lighting up (I suspect it is one of the wheel rotation sensors that drive the ABS, tyre pressure measurement, auto stop start etc.) only to find it is closed - permanently. Pah! again. However, managed to get it booked in to another one in town for tomorrow morning, then we go to Crewe in Jill's car for our second AZ vaccinations. The vaccination centre at Crewe is (wait for it.....) a Honda motorbike showroom. Whoever writes the script for the sitcom I now appear to be living in seems to be stretching things somewhat.
It's the birthday of a friend who lives solo today so we are having her round for champagne and a steak dinner this evening (she is in our bubble) cooked by yours truly. To go with the steak Jill has bought a toothsome looking Rioja and afterwards I think I may well find a glass of some Scottish or Welsh happy water that is in need of imbibing before it goes off. The possibility of driving said friend home looks to be receding at the speed of heat.
So, from a mixed fortune North Hipposhire I wish you all a good day/evening/night. If I have missed out any time zones I apologise.

I may have posted this before (see what I did there?) but a few years ago a friend rang me up to ask if we'd been in Australia recently. When I replied that we hadn't been there for three years she said that she had just received a postcard we'd sent from Melbourne during our last visit there.

Had you been over here, then it would have been a simple case of arriving at my workshop with copious amounts of cake and myself and Dave H could have had a glorious shouting match about who was going to hold it whilst the other drilled it.
The possibility of me holding something while the Army wield an implement that could cause me harm is vanishingly small.
Unless liberal quantities of certain comestibles of the solid and liquid varieties wer on offerr.....

Mike, going back to wagon sheets, I am in contact with Thomas Petith and he has confirmed that he is still able to do MR 7mm versions but I haven't asked him about other companies.
If you are interested, let me have a list of those you would like and I'll ask him whether he can oblige.

But at least it may provide the impetus to resurrect the Mogul project Douglas.
Just why were you reading an article on denatured alcohol, though?

Had a phone call today from the hospital to say that Dad has been declared medically fit for discharge. He still can't get out of bed, walk or even stand unaided, though, so they are looking to transfer him to a community hospital. With luck this could be Whitchurch, which is ten miles away, but it is equally possible that it could be Ludlow, which is over fifty miles away. Since the present policy is 'no choice' neither Dad nor I has any say in the matter. We shall see what tomorrow brings.
As an added bonus to the day my car's warning panel lit up like a Christmas tree on the way home from taking some stuff to the hospital for Dad this afternoon so it's visit the garage time in the morning. Fun or what?
Mind you, I got an hour in the workshop this evening and managed a spot of mod***ing without any major disasters so that was OK.
G'night all.

Best of luck to Douglas for his exams. If there's a possibility of writing about steam engines it's a shoe-in.
Have a good week everyone.

You mean the person I call Y6B substitute?

PS, not that her low-pressure system is anything like as big.

I think that the Y6Bs are superb looking locomotives. A friend of mine has an O scale model of one that he bought in the States some years ago and I covet it.

I was once talking to a non-railway orientated friend and mentioned compound expansion, saying that it was a subject of some controversy among enthusiasts and briefly describing the different methods tried. He commented that they were all just double expansion and asked why no-one had tried triple expansion. I showed him a photograph of a Webb Compound with the low pressure cylinder cover visible. "Ah, " he said, " Now I see."

I agree with iD about Western Canada. I have a cousin in north Vancouver so we can benefit from local knowledge when in that area, which is always helpful for an outsider as it enables us to avoid the traps and find the really good spots. I think that my favourite places, though, are the Banff area and the western side of Vancouver Island. The Lake Louise Fairmont looks grand but we never ventured inside and I can recommend the old railway station there as an eating place - good food at fairly sensible prices and pleasant olde worldly surroundings. We once took The Rocky Mountaineer from Banff to Vancouver and although pricey I think that it is worth the expense as a one-off experience. On Vancouver Island we once stayed in a log cabin in the woods, which was far from basic inside, though, that was about two hundred yards from the shore and that was just brilliant.
Dad seems to be on something of a plateau at the moment and we are waiting to hear what the doctors say after he has been seen tomorrow. Although the plan seems to be getting him into some sort of recuperative accommodation, the matter of his low oxygen levels has to be sorted out first and he seems to be having some more pain from his leg. As the ancient Greeks used to say, "There's allus bl**dy summat."
Stay safe everyoneand enjoy Sunday.

Good morning from a sunny North Hipposhire. I wish that in my third year at grammar school we'd had presentations about steam engines in RE lessons. Good stuff Douglas and here's hoping you may have inspired some of your colleagues.

Not much workshop time recently, largely because of Dad being in hospital with all the concomitant demands on my time plus a small avalanche of things going wrong in the house, with cars, and seemingly with anything else I touch. Cue The Hollies 'King Midas In Reverse'. However, I did manage some modelling activity today and have made some progress with my breakdown crane of the 'two steps forward one step back' variety. At least it's not the other way round. I know that some of you have part finished models that have been around for quite a while but I offer this crane kit of mine as a potential record breaker as Jill bought it for me as a 50th birthday present and I'm 74 a week on Sunday.
As my tonnage has increased somewhat since lockdowns various started, I've been on a diet for the last couple of weeks but this evening that was cast to the winds and fish & chips with bread and butter followed by strawberries and cream was consumed preceded by a large G & T and followed by a fair measure of Welsh happy water later on. I'll probably regret it tomorrow when I step on the scales but what the hell, it was enjoyable.
Have a great weekend people.

Thanks to all ERs who have sent good wishes for Dad. He has been seen twice by a psychiatric nurse and is in a slightly better place mentally although still having trouble sleeping. Physically, his leg is apparently mending nicely but his oxygen level has been low for the last couple of days so he is on antibiotics in case of a lung infection and was due to have an MRI scan this evening to check for blood clots. I spoke to one of the doctors looking after him this afternoon who said that the plan is to get him medically to a state where he can be transferred to a care home or similar where he can continue to have nursing care and physiotherapy. I have managed to see him on Facetime twice more and he now has his laptop and phone so we are able to communicate in a variety of ways but the lack of face to face visiting is not helping his sense of isolation. To give the staff their due, though, it does seem that they are doing their best in the circumstances to make life bearable for him. I don't expect anything to change over the weekend but fingers crossed that next week brings some progress.

The above sequence reminds me of the old joke about three old blokes on a train:
"Is this Wembley?"
"No, Thursday."
"So am I, let's get off and go to the pub."
G'night each.

At least it is a semi-understandable reason for jumping out of a fully serviceable aircraft. There are, of course, those who walk freely among us who do such things for what they regard as 'fun' but who are actually seriously in need of help. I believe that liberal applications of cake can help in some instances.
Any resemblance to person or persons known on this forum is purely coincidental .
