  1. Those little, three-wheel tractors were often to be found in warehouses (railway and other), either working solo or with a train of trailers behind. When we racked-out the old Kaleidoscope warehouse in Banbury, we fitted one with a Burco boiler and large teapot, to save having to traipse several hundred yards for a brew.

Useless info time - That looks like a Brush "Pony" electric truck with the compressor on it. There were two of those trucks sitting under the roadbridge by Loughborough GCR loco works a couple of weeks ago..

  2. Ha, I was looking at that photo earlier and even linked to it in another thread. :)

I would love a model of one of those. I know there was only three, but....

    A decent kit would do.

I scratchbuilt an OO version on a Model Power chassis, only for Silver Fox to promptly bring out a resin body moulding for one about 6 months later! (they did a J70 as well at the same time)

  3. Is this the same location? I don't have a caption, a loco number (682??) or a photographer's name, unfortunately. Note the home-made door on the cab! (CJL)

Yes, thats just outside the brick Pauls building. You can just make out the start of the conveyor that crossed the quayside to the right of the sign on the scaffolding.

This one, which could well be an H.N.James photograph, shows one of the Hunslet 0-4-0 replacements for the tram engines in the same general area. The flagman is for crossing Bridge Street in order to get onto the quayside.

  4. Nice buildings, recognised them immediately, I cycle past the remains of those on my way to work.

Due to space constraints, Burtons went for "a Burton" and the Cranfields single story building on the west side of Foundry Lane was cut down to half size to make it all fit !

Some of the dimensions of the others were reduced as well, but I think it looks like what it is supposed to represent, and I'm slowly adding appropriate road vehicles from the Pauls, Cranfields and Ipswich Dock Commission fleets to the scene as well.

  5. I'd guess the loco was purchased with the idea of putting the working bits under one of the trams .......... but that's only a guess.

Wouldn't have thought so, as the Lisbon ones are 900mm (?) gauge and the electric loco is standard. The Lisbon truck we acquired for Ipswich 33 fits rather nicely under that tram as it was 3'6" gauge in Ipswich (and the body was ludicrously narrow due to the width of some of the streets they ran down - under 6' wide). He's had them some time, but I can't remember how many actually came "complete" from Lisbon, as, at that stage, they were still selling off complete spare vehicles - Im sure some were complete, electrically. Our truck for Ipswich 33 was obtained prior to that as part of a "deal" that Crich were doing with Lisbon - Think it cost us £550 at the time.

Most probably the EARM loco was likely to be scrapped, so he "rescued" it - something he has done in the case of his UK tram body collection!

  6. I will have the livery samples of the 'J70s' plus an example with the extra details fitted for you to see at close quarters, at the British Festival of Railway Modelling at Peterborough Showground this weekend (8/9 December). These were East Anglian engines, operating out of Wisbech, March, Ipswich etc. Pre-orders are still being taken and the models are expected to arrive in early in 2019.

I'll also have USA 0-6-0Ts and Sentinels for sale as well as sound-fitted Class 66s etc. (CJL)

Will have to make sure I have a look at them tomorrow, though I've already ordered two of them!

At least I have somewhere that doesn't look like the Wisbech & Upwell to run them when they arrive..............(still a work in progress)

Will be nice to retire my 45 year old K's kit of a J70 !

  7. That cross-ties with other information received as to owner name so yes, I guess that's it.  Looking somewhat sad.

Not sure exactly how large his "fleet" is nowadays, but wasn't aware, before seeing this thread, that he had the electric loco. He bought several Lisbon trams and attempted to set up a heritage operation with them in Walton which did not proceed very far. He has also got a few UK tramcar bodies that nobody else was interested in - Colchester and possibly Norwich being ones that spring to mind. He had the remains of Ipswich 35 as well, once Ipswich 33 was fully restored (albeit to static condition) a few years back.

He did appear at one of our events last year, but haven't spoken to him about his collection for some time.

  8. Update.

Enquiries via the SLS forum suggest that circa 2015 it was listed by the IRS as dismantled and in private storage at Walton on the Naze rather than on view in a collection.

There certainly used to be a blue painted steeple cab loco at the EARM at Chappel & Wakes Colne in the 1980's - I wonder if this is the same one. If it is now in storage in the Walton on the Naze area, I think I know who may own it, as there are a selection of Lisbon trams (and UK tram bodies) stored there as well.............

  9. The book "Salute to the LNER" by G.Freeman Allen (Ian Allan, 1977) certainly mentions the following (as I've just dug out my copy...):-

"The immediate scarcity of good steam coal coupled with an enthusiastic first-hand report of US Railroad dieselsation by one of its chief officers persuaded the board in 1947 to authorise purchase of 25 1600hp diesel electric main line locos for the East Coast Route"

When I bought the book back in 1978 or thereabouts, it was the first time I had ever read anything about the scheme, though I have since read more about it over the years, but cant remember the other sources!
